The Association of Market and Social Research Organisations has published a discussion paper for its review into last year’s federal election polling failure. It notes that existing standards set by the Australian Press Council are too lax and readily ignored in any case, and suggests a familiar retinue of suggested new standards including full disclosure of weightings used and detail of how preference flows were determined. While the inquiry’s committee and advisory group are impressively credentialled, it should be noted that most actual pollsters aren’t members of the AMSRO. The recent announcement that YouGov, Essential Research and uComms would establish an Australian Polling Council occurred independently of its process, and is likely to be the more consequential development.
Meanwhile, a parliamentary inquiry has been putting the blowtorch to the Electoral Commission of Queensland over the failure of its results reporting facilities at the local government elections and state by-elections on March 28. Excuses include disruption arising from COVID-19, which extended to “coding resources” being locked down in Wuhan, and the complication of combining elections for two state parliament seats with the statewide council elections. It also appears an American firm contracted to provide a new election management system, Konnech, has found itself bamboozled by what the electoral commissioner described as “the complexity of Queensland electoral law”, which “far exceeded that of any other Konnech customer” (a conclusion it would no doubt have reached in any Australian jurisdiction).
The new results website went belly-up on testing a week out from election day, prompting the ECQ to hurriedly concoct the unfamiliar-looking results website that appeared on the night. Polling booth officials were required to submit results through a shareable spreadsheet application, which threw up formating inconsistencies upon transfer to the ECQ system. The ECQ’s technical staff spent the night dealing with the results website issues, leaving corresponding issues with a horrifyingly complex XML results feed to one side. Consequently, the ABC’s results displays remained stuck on a tiny share of the count all night, and updates remained infrequent beyond election night. It is to be hoped that this will all be sorted out before a state election that will be held on October 31.

Restrictions….Victoria
“Victorian beauty and personal care services like nail salons, spas and tattoo parlours will be able to reopen with up to 20 customers per space from June 1. Salons and parlours will be required to keep customer details for contact tracing.
Auctions and open for inspections will also be subject to the 20-person limit – plus those required to conduct the activity – with agents also required to keep the contact details of everyone who attends.
Non-food and drink market stalls will also be able to reopen from June 1.
If community transmission rates continue to remain low and testing rates continue to remain high, the state government will look to further relax restrictions on gyms and social gatherings from June 22.”
Pegasus, since you are into rating Penny Wong interviews and you are so good with cut n paste, would you be so good as to link a sample of some of penny’s better interviews.
Thanks in advance.
2 in Victoria today. I guess that’s an improvement on what we’ve seen lately…

Didn’t take you long to attack the messenger. I would expect nothing less. It’s all you have.
I think Wong’s career ambitions are tempered by the public gaze (read here the Murdoch press) her private life would get if she were to contemplate throwing her hat in the ring for Labor leadership.
In any event, it would mean transitioning to the Reps, which in an off itself is not big deal, but at this time, perhaps not.
The thinking of the LNP when it comes to women was dazzling on display when Julie Bishop got what, 2 votes in the spill?…………Her own and that of, probably, Malcolm’s.
Bishop being single, female and from Western Australia was an overwhelming barrier to the old Liberal party power brokers in the East, would not have been a Murdoch pick and could not overcome the ambitions of the likes of Dutton and Morrison. Oh, and of course Bishop did not have children – clearly something the likes of Joyce thinks is important…..
The only thing that Bishop did not having going against her was the gender choice of her partners….Male and rich seemed to be her preferences…………………..
Seen on the 9news site..
Good advice from Andrews. He’s probably also aware that hundreds of thousands of people going to the Melbourne CBD on public transport is a recipe for disaster.
Good heavens, make a relatively mild criticism of Wong and out they come….

Wong has been open about her private life, she does have children and she’s not in the Liberal Party.
So what’s your point?
130 billion dollar announceable, 60 billion dollar spend. That is consistent with the Liberals performance. Why is anybody seriously considering the excuse.
The stimulus is going to under whelm We are going to have a recession. get used to it.

You mean the ones posted on here? Mostly, but for the detail.
For example people providing personal care and their customers should be wearing masks.
The real worry for me is how many people end up on public transport and form crowds in indoor spaces.
Oh and the requirement to keep a log of who attends.. that should extend to every indoor activity. As I understand it they have logging in New Zealand.
Does anyone know the breakdown of those 2 cases in Victoria today?
Good god! What an embarrassment Lindsey Graham is! There are no limits to the lengths he’ll go to in order to stay on Trump’s good books.

Labor has a robust method of developing policy.
All the Greens offer is press released developed in the leaders office.
The Greens press release are not policy, they are just random inconsistent shit.
Give it rest. Post another press release so we can see the random crap the staffers have come up with this time. It is mildly interesting.

What Victorians will be allowed to do from June 1
By Rachael Dexter
Victorians will have new (old) freedoms from Monday, June 1 – that’s just seven days from today, for those who are counting.
Here are some of the key changes, announced by the Premier this morning, that will come into effect from June 1:
Gatherings at private homes can now be up to 20 people, including the members of a household. For a family of five, that means 15 visitors.
Public gatherings (indoor and outdoor) will increase to 20 people.
Overnight stays will be allowed in both private residents and hotels.
Campgrounds, caravan parks and tourist accommodation allowed to reopen, as long as shared bathroom and kitchen facilities are not used.
Beauty therapy, tanning, waxing, nail salons, spas, tattoo parlours and massage parlours may reopen with up to 20 patrons.
Cafes, restaurants and pubs may serve meals for up to 20 people.
Galleries, museums, zoos, historic sites, arcades, drive-in cinemas and outdoor amusement parks will reopen with up to 20 patrons per space.
Weddings will be allowed up to 20 people, plus the celebrant and couple.
Funerals can increase to 50 people (indoors and outdoors).
Religious services may increase to up to 20 people, plus those required to conduct the ceremony.
Bootcamps can increase to 20 people, plus an instructor.
Auction houses, real estate auctions and open house inspections can increase to 20 people.
Libraries, youth centres and other community facilities allowed to reopen with no more than 20 people in a single area, plus those needed to operate the space.

Dan sounds a little silly giving rather petty examples compared with the greater threat of being confined with 50 to 100 people in a sealed unit for 30 to 90 minutes to get to and from work.

I hope NSW does the same.
Its a shame they can’t keep a log of who attends a bus. Although I do wonder about Opal card data and whether the privacy restrictions wouldn’t allow that to be used.
Pegasus
2 new cases but the total number changed by 1.
Cud,
No it won’t to have to worry about those from Vic and NSW. I take steps each day to reduce my possible contact with possible infectious people and have always done so.
I don’t use public transport, I was my hands regularly (have always done), I have always followed social distancing (I’m not a hugger or cheek kisser or hand shaker). I follow basic hygiene and I would doubt those that have contracted the disease have followed those same rules. And yes, I acknowledge presence when I see someone for the first time with a smile and greeting.
And other than having a heart attack some 5 years ago with a couple of stents inserted I have had no other illness other than the occasional cold (which I haven’t had since that event). I could be classified as a in the risk category but you know what, I’m willing to take that chance because of what actions I take myself. So you see we can all take the necessary steps, the problem is some choose not to.
PS : I have been going to a gym for 5+ years around 4-5 times a week and never been got ill once.
Does anyone think political considerations, or, political reality, came to bear on Andrews’ easing of restrictions?

That about sums it up doesn’t it, the Greens a party all about destruction, never about considering the complex issues.

Yes.
Do you think he’s been reckless and a danger to community health re Covid-19 ?
C@tmomma: “Penny Wong would have been our Foreign Minister right now if greedy bastards and gullible numbnuts hadn’t fallen for the Morrison Coalition election spin, misleading as it was on an epic scale.”
You mean the Liberals’ totally dishonest spin that, if you voted Labor, you’d get a government that would harshly tax (or in the case, of dividend imputation, take back) the wealth that you had created/hoped to create for your retirement? Or take away your job in the coal mining industry, or perhaps not take it away, or, look, we’re not really sure: ask Richard Marles. Or Joel Fitzgibbon. Or someone. It’d be a good idea for someone to tell Bill what our policy on coal is, because he isn’t sure either.
Labor people need to appreciate that, if the electorate chooses not to vote them into office, it’s not likely to be because Rupert Murdoch controls a switch in their brains, or because the opinion poll results were manipulated to lure the Labor leadership into a false sense of security, or because the Liberals and Clive Palmer hypnotised them with lies. It’s because Labor didn’t give voters as good a reason to vote for them as the Coalition did.
Last election was extraordinary in that the value proposition of the Liberals was entirely negative: we might be tearing ourselves apart internally, we might be a total mess, but we promise not to do the things Labor is promising to do. And that was enough for them to win the election. Tells you everything you need to know about just how unbelievably bad Labor’s campaign was.

BB, the App is an untested, untestable heap of shite, brought to you by the geniuses who created Robodebt. It is worse than worthless, it is a costly bad joke. It is totally wasted money, that has just resulted in pissing resources, that could have been usefully assigned elsewhere, up against a wall. You have been sucked in, which was always the intention. Sucker.
Take it from a person with too many years of actual, real world experience in designing, project managing, developing, installing and commissioning very large computerised data processing applications; software that is untestable, and untested is worse than useless, because no confidence, whatsoever, can be placed in its output. The inventors of Bluetooth have both, personally, refuted the validity of the supposed basic premise of the App, stating unequivocally that Bluetooth handshaking cannot provide any useful information about the proximity of the the two devices involved, as I posted here at the outset.
The purpose of the App ‘development’ was to con those that are susceptible to being conned, like you and a goodly proportion of the population of Australia. Mission accomplished!
Kirky….if you get sick someone will have to take care of you. You will be a risk to those carers. The pandemic is not only about the self. It is about everyone.

It could be, but I wouldn’t discount employers making errors in completing govt paperwork. I mean it isn’t as if this kind of thing doesn’t happen routinely, and esp in this instance given these measures were implemented quickly (as they should be), with presumably little to no time for education/informing as to how to complete the forms correctly.
