Essential Research coronavirus latest

Support rising for an easing of coronavirus restrictions, and strong backing for Kristina Keneally’s contentious call for migration cuts.

The usual weekly Essential Research coronavirus poll finds “only a quarter” of respondents now consider it too soon to be easing coronavirus restrictions, down from a peak of 49% in mid-April. There was also strong support for a range of fresh restrictions being imposed if there is a new surge of cases, but not for making the coronavirus app compulsory, which only 38% supported. Only 45% were confident the government would be able to adequately protect data from the app, and 44% were confident the government itself would not misuse it. Kristina Keneally’s call for a reduction in temporary migration after the pandemic had the support of 67% of respondents. All this detail is derived from The Guardian, which also tells us that the number of respondents who are “quite concerned” about the virus is up three points since last week to 49%, but without the “very concerned” figure it’s hard to know what if anything to make of that. The full report from the pollster should be published later today.

UPDATE: Full report here. The government reaches new heights on the eighth weekly iteration of the question as to how well it is handling the crisis, with good up five points to 71% and poor down one to 13%. The goodwill extends to state governments, who are collectively up three on good to 73% and steady on poor at 12%. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1067.

All the MPs are here for this sitting, but there will be a rotating roster for who gets to sit in the house, to ensure social distance requirements are met. So keep an eye on Twitter, because you are bound to be getting a lot of ‘watching it from the office’ tweets with various books and items moved in front of the TV in an approximation of a personality.

  2. I see you are using Murdoch talking points.

    “Lunar Left” is a classic.

Indeed. Classic. A lot of that around here when deflection is all the go. Ad hominems to the fore!

The government will today introduce legislation governing the use of COVIDSafe data, the Privacy Amendment (Public Health Contact Information) Bill 2020, to replace Greg Hunt’s regulatory Determination.

  4. My guess is that the Greens would locate the next Warragamba Dam in Bandt’s electorate.

It would be an excellent place to locate a dam because no forests will need to be cleared and there would be no biodiversity loss.

Of course the Dam would displace a few people but what do a few people matter when y0u intend to go along with doubling Australia’s population by 2050?

    Exactly.

You can point out the language used was a mistake while supporting Labor and KK on the issue.

Wong didn’t do that because she was on national television and was not giving the LNP a free kick.

That does not mean we have to have the same standard on this blog.
I am not a politician and certainly not a Liberal National Party one.

The language was twisted by the likes of you, who didn’t understand what she was talking about.

  7. Amy’s criticism here is very valid, I feel.

Step three of the plan, is the road back to a ‘Covid-safe economy’ which is not actually a thing until we get a vaccination, but I suppose someone got paid a lot of money to come up with that term, or at the very least, received a gold star, so get used to hearing it.

Oh wow, the PM just said that from the day the jobkeeper/seeker was announced confidence was boosted. Got that? The announcement is more important than paying the money. This is like living with an abusive tyrant – grateful for a crumbs that never eventuate.

  9. The language was twisted by the likes of you, who didn’t understand what she was talking about.

Sure, sure, everyone who criticised KK’s opinion piece are so “stupid” they “didn’t understand”, including those within Labor and elsewhere.

BinTB really needs to address his denial and cognitive dissonance.

Nope. Not me. I did not say Australia first.

An interesting fact. Chris Richardson of access economics attacked the migrants take your jobs mantra very well. He said that if that was the case the same could be said of unmarried mothers.

I support KK and Labor in preventing the exploitation of migrant workers to attack and lower wages. Just don’t use Australian’s first. It’s a well established dog whistle.

  11. Jones is going. Good. Why would Albo want to make an issue of Jones just as he’s about to evaporate? There is absolutely no upside for Albo in making ungracious remarks about Jones. None. He’s leaving. Bygones can be bygones.

Besides, why would Albo want to indulge the Libkin by sneering at Jones? The Libkin are more than capable of working up a sneer for any occasion without any encouragement from Albo. As it turns out, the Libkin this morning are sneering not so much at Jones, but at Albo. Nothing changes.

See you’re conflating migration with temporary workers.

  13. Barney

    conflating migration with temporary workers.

This has been the problem throughout the so-called conversation. No clear thinking.

Perhaps the most stupid and ignorant analogy I have ever seen. There is no connection whatsoever and I’d like to see someone explain it.

[‘Just listened to it. Yeah nah not good Albo, not good.’]

It’s not smart politics to rake over old coals – Whitlam’s dismissal excepting. Yes, Jones is a prick but no useful purpose is served by belting him on the day he’s announced his retirement from radio.

  16. guytaur

So what is your plan to stop their exploitation and the denial of opportunity for local workers the current system is rife with ?

  17. “Jones is going. Good. Why would Albo want to make an issue of Jones just as he’s about to evaporate?”

    ***

He didn’t have to make an issue of it, he just didn’t need to call in to Jones’ radio show and praise him. Say nothing. And unfortunately Jones is not evaporating, he’s still got a job selling Murdoch’s propaganda on Sky News. Just no more radio show.

It’s the same with those damn CovidSafe app ads! Full of Shiny Happy People going forward purposefully with big smiles on their faces back into their comfortably middle class lives! All you need is the app. All you need is love. And a giant gormless grin on your face full to the brim with perfect teeth and back you go into the world of the ‘Covid-safe economy’!

Well they can take their Covid-safe economy and their Ring of Confidence app and shove it where Donald Trump’s light cure shines!

  19. If Albo’s comments on Jones were as reported in the Guardian live blog he was hardly effusive in praise. It was definitely in the “if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing” school of – as I read it – almost damning with faint praise.

But yes, being gracious when Jones is bowing out is perfectly politically sensible. It achieves nothing to harp on about culture war stuff in this context. Jones supporters will continue to support him, those of us who have always despised him will continue to despise him; what Albo says on the matter won’t change any of that, so sticking with being respectful and finding the modest grounds of commonality seems like the right choice to me.

It was on yesterday’s ABC News 24. The unmarried mother created more economic activity by working. Same applies to visa holders. As long as they spend in the local economy. Which they do. The whole backpacker tourist trade depends on those economics.

Edit: Wayne Swan used the same logic for his stimulus package.

  21. “Oh wow, the PM just said that from the day the jobkeeper/seeker was announced confidence was boosted.”

I know quite a few recently unemployed people (including my sister-in-law) who missed out on JobKeeper. I know their confidence wasn’t boosted.

  22. ‘Temporary Migrants’. When you start repeating that, you should know that you’ve been sold a pup by the Neoliberals.

  23. Isn’t it marvellous that we are free to choose NOT to watch a single state controlled TV, and can tune out from RWNJ broadcasts.

I think he was talking about himself, in his self-aggrandising, delusional Happy Clapper Pentecostal way. He probably believes another miracle and batch of prayers saved him from the Bushfires clusterstuffup.

It’s a pity no one asks him such pointed questions.

“I imagine Jones will still continue with his Sky gig, and his guest spots on a many and varied array of other shows?

    Retire, my arse.“

Seeing as he actually said that he is not retiring and will keep doing TV and other things, he’s just retiring from Radio, you are correct.

I have never listened to him but the story was on the ABC Radio just then.

It’s a commonly accepted term. That changes the definition.

I would prefer we used tourists too. However that’s beyond my control.

  29. China has suspended meat exports from at least four Australian abattoirs overnight, as trade tensions between Australia and the communist nation rise.

The Australian understands the Kilcoy plant, Beef City in Toowoomba, the Dinmore meatworks in Brisbane and the Northern Co-operative Meat Company at Casino in NSW have been suspended by Chinese authorities. It has been confirmed that those four plants have not been officially delisted, and the four have not yet lost their licenses in China.

The Beef City and Dinmore plants are both owned by JBS Australia. The Australian has contacted Kilcoy, the Northern Co-operative Meat Company and JBS for comment.

The meat bans come as China prepares to slap large tariffs on Australian barley as early as this Sunday.

Industry sources have told The Australian that it is possible a technical matter is behind the four suspensions.

Wow! What a bitchy backhander from Pegasus! Accusing us, without actually saying it, of being racists! Yet again. Without addressing the substance of Rizvi’s article and why it was highlighted. Yet again.
