Essential Research coronavirus latest

Confidence in the federal government and other institutions on the rise, but state governments in New South Wales and Queensland appear to lag behind Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia.

The Guardian reports Essential Research’s latest weekly reading of concern about coronavirus finds satisfaction with the government’s handling of the crisis up two points to 65%, its best result yet out of the five such polls that have been published (no sign yet of the poor rating, which hit a new low of 17% – the full report later today should reveal all).

Last week’s question on state governments’ responses was repeated this week, and with due regard to sample sizes that run no higher than around 320 (and not even in triple figures in the case of South Australia), the good ratings have been 56% last week and 61% for New South Wales; 76% and 70% for Victoria; 52% and 63% for Queensland; 79% and 77% for Western Australia; and 72% and 66% for South Australia. Combining the results gives New South Wales 58.5% and Victoria 73% with error margins of about 3.7%; Queensland 57.5% from 4.6%; Western Australia 78% from 5.5%; and South Australia 69% from 6.9%.

Also included are Essential’s occasion question on trust in various institutions, which suggests that all of the above might be benefiting from a secular effect that has federal parliament up from 35% to 53% and the ABC up from 51% to 58%. The effect is more modest for the Australian Federal Police, up two points to 68%. In other coronavirus-related findings, the poll finds “half of all voters think it’s too soon to even consider easing restrictions“, with a further 14% saying they are prepared to wait until the end of May; that 38% said they would download the virus-tracing app, with 63% saying they had security concerns and 35% being confident the data would not be misused.

Can you imagine the screaming if Labor was in Government now –

    __________________________________

It’s an ugly truth that the coalition in opposition would be running obstacles at every turn and bleating and complaining. We are better off with the Coalition in power at the moment because Labor is co-operative and Morrison is too uncertain to do a Trump. If Labor were in power they would have to deal with shitty opportunistic obstruction at every turn and the outcomes would probably be worse.

Which is why our resident Eeyore is so irritating. The Coalition can get away with being obstructionist; Labor can’t and, in the national interest, should not at this time.

There will be plenty of opportunity for Labor to step up when the neoliberal clowns try to wind back their trumpeted ‘generosity’.

    Timid defeatist claptrap. Sorry.
Labor would be doing a better job of this now and later, most of them know and believe that. Most of us know and believe that.
If now is not the time for Labor to step up and put itself out there when is.

Honestly @JoshFrydenberg needs to explain to Australians why casuals with less than one years service, get nothing while rugby union players, barristers and other hugely paid people can claim $750 a week Job Payment cause they’re salary dropped. This is insanity!

    Great line.
Labor – the Opposition – is on to it.

Damn, it’s expired but the cosy chat Speers had with #Dutton in late feb/early March on #Insiders is worth revisiting. Dutton lied non-stop about measures already in place at ports and airports to keep his borders safe. Nothing was in place and little has changed.

The show has expired on iView, however it’s still on the Insiders home page:

So you weren’t taking things personally when you flared up in defence of your grand-daughters’ conception?

I objected to the comments about IVF, which were illogical and pointless, based on misconceptions of the nature of, and practice of IVF. You could have objected to opthamology consultations, or ultrasound shoulder examinations with just as little justification, but you chose IVF for some peculiar reason known only to yourself. I reacted to wilful misrepresentation, which you apparently based on easily ameliorated lack of knowledge.

  7. It’s interesting; the “conversation” around what are good jobs and bad jobs seems to be starting (at least here). That’s fine as far as it goes, but it’s too easy for that to become “good people and bad people”.

Shit like that will just screw us over.

  8. yabba

I commented on IVF partly because it is the only procedure that I have heard mentioned as a possible relaxation of restrictions. I didn’t pick it out of a list. You might also read later comments by others.

  9. No wonder people are confused.

    * The “TraceTogether” server needs to do the job of generating, transmitting and then remembering 10s of millions of IDs every 15 minutes.

Wait, what? Why does the app not generate random UUID’s (or equivalent) for each event, client-side? The server needs to receive them, but even then probably only in cases where a diagnosis is confirmed. It doesn’t need to generate, verify, or (except in cases of confirmed diagnosis) transmit contact-ids.

    * The server triggers the app on any particular phone to upload its data. We are told this will be only done if the owner of the phone consents.

Again, wtf? That can only be done if the server-side data isn’t anonymous; for the server to initiate it has to map from a person to the device(s) that person uses.

It should be that the app initiates the upload upon the user indicating they’ve been diagnosed with C19, possibly with the requirement to attach supporting documentation for review by a server-side admin prior to the alerting of any contacts.

  11. South Australia’s three-day run of zero new cases has ended with two confirmed cases.

One patient is aged in their 20s, the other in their 60s, and the source of each is known.

One came from contact with an infected international traveller – the other from an infected interstate traveller.

He’s lying and trying to rewrite history because he’s getting blowback from an important constituency and now that the numbers are going down he can do that.

  13. The unanswered question is whether Labor, in Opposition, should adopt the tactic of trying to out bastardise the LNP when they were in Opposition. Apart from anything else, Labor does not tend to attract the type of total bastards who find themselves much more at home in the LNP……..
Unfortunately, while 30-40% of the electorate kind of like selfish, competitive, self-seeking, greedy, incompetent duds to represent them, Labor is challenged about which way to go………..Try to convince people of their case, or just be like the head-kickers who like to call themselves “Liberals”…..?

    yabba,
One thing I know for sure, you are a pompous wanker who thinks he knows others’ minds and bases his uncalled for abuse based upon those misconceptions and what he regards as his superior knowledge.

Lay off, lizzie! She has more decency and kindness in her little finger than you will accumulate in your whole miserable life.

  15. Tricot,
Two words. Paul Keating. A headkicker with a heart, wit and wisdom. Though I think Labor just needs a better campaign team next time. Also, I have seen some of the up and comers and we are in good hands. 🙂

  16. For those saying they want the economy open.

The reply should be after the mass testing.

Doing mass testing is the way to go. I am no fan of the Govt app but that’s the idea of it. Get the mass testing going so we can open up the economy.

Tony Abbott doesn’t need to be concerned about Peta Credlin not receiving the credit that she so rightly deserves.

Peta Credlin has taken all the credit for the Abbott Government.

That’s a lot of fail to carry.

  18. Whilst it seems some Aussie’s reinforce the bogan insular nature of our culture by throwing rocks and screaming at backpackers or asian looking people to leave, because we Aussie’s are too scared of covid19. Even though we appear to be one of the populations that have suffered the least in direct risk.

In the stuff of non-covid fevered nightmares for many LNP supporters, real actual communists and socialists appear to have done a lot better in regard to acting and providing for their people, guests and visitors than many here. They have even provided them chapati instead of just rice.

The Kerala government has been off and on a communist and socialist coalition government for much of the last 40 years. The most educated and likely politically active state in India with the best public health system. Numerous stories have been indicating just how effective and on the front foot they have been. Their fast acting health minister, or ‘coronavirus slayer’, was a former science teacher.

We seem to like stories of how terrible things are in poor countries and appear to not want to hear about how states or countries with far more problems and less resources do better than us sometimes. They are already preparing to open their restrictions apparently.

Their prior experience with another zoonotic disease, Nipah virus, also via bats in 2018, seems to have put them in good stead as well.

    Via Guardian global blog

“Health minister, KK Shailaja, who swiftly earned the nickname “Coronavirus Slayer”, was the first in the country to assemble a taskforce in mid-February to begin aggressively contact tracing, testing and quarantining any possible cases. The state also closed all schools, restaurants and banned gatherings before any other and began setting up public sinks and hand sanitiser dispensers in public places, even at bus stops. The state has one of the highest testing rates in India, though it has also faced a shortage of testing kits.

And when prime minister Narendra Modi announced a nationwide lockdown on March 24 with four hours notice, causing havoc for the millions of migrant workers stuck thousands of miles from home. The Kerala authorities set up camps and provided provisions for their three million “guest workers”, preventing the dangerous exodus of people trying to get back home. A total of almost 19,000 relief camps have since been set up in Kerala, providing three meals a day. In comparison, in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state which has one of the highest numbers of migrant workers, just 2,000 camps have been set up.

“Those in the camps are being given regular health checks and they even made arrangements to charge migrant workers phones, set up a helpline call centre which speaks five Indian languages. They also established a counselling service and when protests broke out in the camps by the migrant workers from northern states that they were only being fed rice, their diet was adapted to suit northern India tastes, including chapati, dal and pickle. In one camp, a Bengali kitchen was established. Across the state, mobile health workers are visiting the elderly and vulnerable.”

The Santa Clara study. There’s been a fair amount of questioning of the methodology on Twitter by real epidemiologists on that one. I was reading them the other day, so I don’t have any links handy.

  20. RE: tactic of trying to out bastardise the LNP when they were in Opposition

I hate to type this, but in this screaming, social media world this is the only game in town- the Abbotts, Johnsons, Morrisons and Trumps did not get elected by being polite, or accurate or Mensa members.

At the very least Labor needs the mongrel to want to win- everyday, every minute….. ….because the forces against them spend every waking moment consolidating power.

  22. South Australia has offered to take more repatriated Australians after the arrival of a second mercy flight from India in response to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The fight from Mumbai touched down in Adelaide on Tuesday with the 325 people on board moved into hotels to begin two weeks of quarantine.

That followed the arrival of 374 people on a flight from Chennai on Monday.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said both operations went off without issues and all passengers were happy to be back in Australia.

He said with up to 15,000 Australians still overseas, SA had begun preparations to possibly take an additional flight.

“Having learned from what other jurisdictions have done in this space we were well prepared for this,” Mr Stevens said.

“I think it’s reasonable to be expected that we will be asked to accommodate another plane or maybe two.

Yes. Labor should be out there every day saying the virus has proven the LNP ideology wrong.

    Science matters. Expertise matters.
It’s time for a Green New Deal.

That includes a UBI and/or a job guarantee.

As Wayne Swan wrote. We need a new social contract.

  24. guytaur

Never mind all the sweet talk and policy stuff. They can keep that in their back pockets, but go for the jugular. That’s what the LNP do.

  25. My son has put forward this premise. Please respond.

It is no point shutting down economies because the shut down will cause more deaths than if we let the virus run free.”
