Not a creature was stirring

Chisholm and Kooyong court ruling imminent; comparison of American and Australian political attitudes; and a merry Christmas to all.

At what’s normally a dull time for electoral news, the Federal Court has decided to beat Santa to the punch by announcing its judgement in the challenges to the Chisholm and Kooyong results at 2:15pm today. I’ll add a dedicated post when that happens, but for the time being, here’s the latest thread for general political discussion, it being long past time for a new one.

Two other items of news I can think to mention: the United States Studies Centre has published a report that compares survey results on political attitudes in Australia and the United States, which reaches the intuitive conclusions that Australians are both less conservative and less polarised by partisanship; and GhostWhoVotes offers a neat presentation of the states’ House of Representatives seat entitlements based on current population numbers, six months out from the final determination.

  1. Any thoughts on Behrouz Boochani – who apparently got a one month visa out of manus to nz and is now seeking asylum in nz ?

  2. I thank Shellbell for posting the decision of the Federal Court re. the challenges of the petitioners to the results in Kooyong and Chisolm. I mistakenly thought that Josh Frydenberg’s issue was predicated on his apparent right to Hungarian citizenship, having difficulty in understanding why the Federal Court heard the matter rather than the High Court. It goes to show, one should do their homework.

  3. Merry xmas Bludgers, hope youse all have a great few days of eating, drinking and spending time with loved ones.

Today the WA govt made some judicial appointments, including someone it is claiming is the first Aboriginal judge in the state’s history, and one of only a handful in the country.

“Magistrate MacLean is an Aboriginal man whose kinship links are in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and Mulga Downs Station in particular.

“It is believed he is the first Aboriginal judge appointed in Western Australian history.

“I am aware that there have been appointments of Aboriginal people to the magistracy in the past, but this is the first that I am aware of to either the District Court or Supreme Court in Western Australia.

“Indeed, I hope it will be the first of many.

His visa has expired and NZ pollies have been Sgt Shultz when asked. NZ is as Australia used to be, such decisions are left up to the civil servants. He was treated like a rock star over there so it looks good for a decision in his favour…….if he applied

  5. davidwh, and C@t,

Merry Christmas to all PB’ers and special thanks to William for putting up with us all year.

And a big +1 from me as well.

Edit: Doveish –> davidwh. But David, you are definitely one of the cheesemakers on this blog.

  6. This is why I love where I live. The incident controller allowed us to have our fire tanker released from tasking to do the annual Santa run through the town. Our usual lolly gifts for the kids were this year supplemented by lots of lovely wrapped gifts from an Anglican church.
One guy on the lead ute last night got back from 6 days in tne NSW fires and spent all day on our truck. His wife in the tanker has been out every one of the last five hectic days.
Our visitors from Beijing loved it!

Are you near Petaluma ? To show my solidarity with SA wine makers I bought a Petaluma chardonnay for tomorrow. 😀

So to all the mad bad and OFMG of the Bludger Lounge a very merry xmas . But the biggest MERRY goes to the HQ of……………………

    Good luck to him!

  10. Any thoughts on Behrouz Boochani – who apparently got a one month visa out of manus to nz and is now seeking asylum in nz ?

Seems like a competent person that would add to any society that allowed him to stay. Good luck to him and NZ.

  11. BK,

That is gorgeous. Thanks so much for sharing.

    Community is incredibly important.

  12. And Merry Christmas also to Mr Bowe over in Perth, where the sun goes down over the beach:

Thank you for being so tolerant, handsome and funny (the cheque for 2020 is in the mail 😉 )

  13. Anyway, that’s me for tonight, wishing every poster and the moderator a plesant Festive Season. And if there are some out there who are lost, lonely, you’ve always got this wonderful site to return to. Do think positive.

  14. Nath,

Merry Xmas to all who don’t hate me and wish me dead.

And Happy Holidays to you also! I may come on a bit strong with the rhetoric and admonishment sometimes – some of my friends think I am vicious – but do not read too much into it 😀

  15. So, Merry Christmas to All.

I value everyone’s contribution here, and I think it keeps the blog a (relatively) sane place. Although, as I am not sane, my judgement may be a bit off.

So, thank you everyone for your interesting contributions.

Particular thanks to William, our Lord and Master for putting up with us.

And a really big thanks to BK – I have my morning coffee reading the Dawn Patrol, and particularly Cartoon Corner.

And really big thanks to C@tmomma and Lizzie, who stand in for BK when needed, so I can still get my daily fix of news and cartoons.

And a big thanks to Kay Jay also, for his whimsy, and his willingness to delve into the “dark side”, bringing us news from Mordor Media, but in small doses, diluted with a lot of yummy sugar satire.

And Fess, a special mention to you – I have really enjoyed talking to you about you activities, particularly with respect to science outreach.

Many more posters I really enjoy, but at this stage just need to say : Thanks a bunch!!!

I will in the next few posts bore you all with sundry cute images and bits of music that I feel is apposite for this occasion, as I fortify myself for the celebrations tomorrow.

The fact that I was buying presents today for the little ones, and my most important consideration was that no parent would feel disrespected because of the gifts I gave each said little one.

I was putting together a weighted average of volume, function and apparent cost to decide on what to buy each child. Not sure I got it right, but I guess I will be told.

So M merry Fuck’n Christmas to you!

  16. Shellbell,

Merry Christmas from Burradoo, Southern Highlands, New South Wales.

A very fine drizzle intermingled with some pretty thick smoke.

Enjoy – my OH’s non-French family come from parts near there.

Also, a big thanks some years ago for helping with one of our young girls around here. I still very much remember how your willingness to help made a big difference to her life. And a big thanks to Mrs Shellbell for her (and your) commitment to helping asylum seekers in our gulag archipelago- if two island can form an archipelago.

  17. Best wishes to all for this ancient festival of light emerging from darkness
    We can only hope

O my deir hert, young Jesus sweit,
Prepare thy creddil in my spreit,
And I sall rock thee in my hert
And never mair from thee depart.

But I sall praise thee evermore
    With sangis sweit unto thy gloir;
The knees of my heart sall I bow,
    And sing that richt Balulalow!

The knees of my heart sall I bow,
    And sing that richt Balulalow!

  18. Merry Christmas to all; a time to reflect.
Listening to Vietnam protest songs and such, a few tears are good for you.
