Newspoll’s first result in three weeks, and second since the election, turns up a surprise in recording a shrinking in the Coalition’s lead from 53-47 to 51-49 – which, if meaningful, would mean an end to the honeymoon period and a return to where things stood at election time. On the primary vote, the Coalition is on 42%, down two points on the last poll and up 0.6% on the election result; Labor is on 34%, up one point and 0.7%; the Greens are on 11%, steady and up 0.6%; and One Nation are on 4%, up one point and 0.9%.
Leadership ratings are likewise consistent with the fading of a post-election sugar hit, with Scott Morrison down three on approval to 48% and up six on disapproval to 42%. Anthony Albanese’s ratings also seem to be trending from mediocre to respectable, with his approval up two to 41% and disapproval down to 34%, leaving him shading Morrison by a point on net approval. However, this hasn’t translated to preferred prime minister for some reason, on which Morrison holds a healthy lead of 48-30, out from 48-31 last time.
The poll was conducted by online and automated phone surveying from a sample of 1623, from Thursday to Sunday. Full report from The Australian here. As before, we remain in the dark as to how the pollster’s methods have been adjusted since the election failure, if at all. However, the size of the movements, and the lack of anything obvious to explain them, suggests the poll has not been subjected to the smoothing method that Newspoll must have been using before the election to give it its uncanny and, as it turned out, misleading consistency.

I still think Labor’s best Federal Election chance is go to the election tying Morrison to Trump.
This is more absolute rubbish. Voters are motivated by access to work. This shifts votes. In Lib-kin Garden, Labor are depicted by the Lib-Libs and the Lib-ling as being soft on jobs. This will keep Labor out of power for as long as the Lib-Lib+Lib-ling campaign persists.
Labor will remain an Opposition voice in Lib-kin Garden.
It is heartening to see the Queensland Labor Government take time out of the daily business of government – kowtowing to property developer and fossil fuel interests – to have a crack at a long neglected problem: the horrendous death toll caused by bicycle chains and glue. It is appropriate for the police to be empowered to intrude on people’s privacy as they walk the streets of the CBD, just to check whether they are carrying these lethal devices. Families have been torn apart, lives shattered by the spate of bicycle chain and glue-related deaths. The government is not trying to delegitimize peaceful protests against their policies, intimidate people from protesting, and thereby depress turn-out. They are doing the noble work of saving lives. Good on them.
Nicholas, you’ve obviously never had to assist at the scene of a serious road accident or attend to those affected by a fatality or a near miss. The roads do not belong to protestors. We go to a lot of trouble to make them safe for the common benefit. Those who want to protest have ample opportunities to do so. Their rights are not being abridged.

Yeah I know what a terrible thing to say but hey I’m just so revolting anyway.
When you’ve all calmed down I hope you re-read those words you wrote and reflect on their viciousness.
I went out of my way to try to argue a case in temperate words, not just spew out ad hominem attacks. The exception was Yabba who had attacked me personally before the ink was dry on the judgement. Apparently I fulfilled all his fantasies of a Pell fanboy, which meant (as he proudly admitted) he only read two sentences of the post in question.
But when you’re dispensing judgement and hatred, when your No. 1 whipping boy is in the dock and found guilty, you might as well spread the love. Anyone who disagrees with your vituperation must be some kind of pedo lover, I guess the conclusion is.
I did not say anyone was revolting. I said the words and the sentiment they expressed was revolting. Everyone – guilty or innocent – who’s ever been strung up by a hate-filled lynch mob, or tortured painfully and kept conscious until they expire screaming in agony (Yabba’s personal preference, from memory) will understand what I mean.
Hate should never be a normal human reaction, as Adrian claims. As a civilized society we stopped punishment based on hate and extreme violence and torture centuries ago. I know Adrian didn’t take this position explicitly, but if you’re going to make excuses for hatred, someone listening might be listening.
What’s the difference between hating Pell who, yes, has been found guilty, and hating Muslims, or Jews, or gays or Africans who, in the eyes of those who hate them, and murder them, are all “guilty” – of something – too?
If we’re going to give ourselves licence to hate, not on occasion, as a human failing, but as a loud and proud moral position, then we really can’t complain when others give themselves the licence to hate us too. And if you think that’s fair enough, then what you’re really in favour of is a society based on the worst in us, not the best.
Next time you feel justified in taking up the torches and pitchforks, be quick, because those who hate you might be quicker on the draw. Next time you protest, say, against some poor sod being hung in Singapore, even if he’s guilty, remember it’s a course of action you arrogate to yourselves, so you can’t really whinge too much about it.
Just be consistent, is all I can suggest. And be ready to take the consequences. Hatred, once unleashed, is very difficult to put back in its cage.
Labor will remain an Opposition voice in Lib-kin Garden.

But, but, isn’t it the Greens Party who was meant to implode and endure leadershit after the last federal election.
Let them dream on in the hope it will happen sometime whenever. In this scenario Labor doesn’t have to do anything really except roll over, pass legislation together with the Coalition and generally be a “small target” without standing up for what it believes in (or, perhaps it is).
Let Labor shy away from authentically and unambiguously prosecuting a vision to change the national conversation.
That seems to be its current political strategy.

Doesn’t speak well for Labors position if they aren’t necessarily the same views as his.
Labor are the masters of the self-wedge. Nath’s right, they should disband and let a new progressive party form.
I am not disrespecting any Greens supporters or members here, however the Greens are very much a Middle Class party and also Environmentalist. Given a large section of the Australian populace hate Environmentalism with a passion. Just look at the reaction of the people in Central Queensland to the stop Adani convoy. In contrast, the Green parties in Europe do not have to face large sections of their country’s electorates that hate environmentalism.
Therefore; I can’t see the Greens increasing their support more than 15% or so.

I’d hardly call the “hatred” expressed re Pell is as revolting as the crime as going out of the way to try to argue a case in temperate words.
The full context of my response to this false equivalency was as follows:
“I hope he dies slowly and painfully, in full possession of his faculties…
The hatred expressed above (and elsewhere) is as revolting as the crime”.
Really!!?? I hate the Nazis who committed mass murder and torture during WWII. I guess I’ll be losing sleep at night now that I’m just as revolting as those Nazis. Not.
That statement is more symptomatic of Attention Seeking Disorder or just Trolling.

I am still waiting for the list of things the Greens have actually achieved in the last 20 years.
Stunts and swipes at Labor don’t really amount to much.
Just read that the IPA is raising more money for Pell’s appeal.
Why can’t his Church support him? And – I didn’t realise that the IPA is a Catholic org. (sarc)

I agree the Greens are a middle class party with a focus on social issues and the environment, but I don’t think most people hate environmentalism at all but they place a higher value on work.
I think the focus on north Queensland is misleading as the current boundaries in a number of seats favor the LNP and Queensland politics is about being pro industry and the local regions.

The Greens went from being a credible environmentalist Group to a bunch of self important chancers with much to say beyond their original remit.
Since its inception as a federated party, the Greens party platform has been based on four key principles: ecological sustainability, grassroots democracy, social justice and peace and non-violence.
It has never been just an ‘environmental party’.

When it comes to the IPA, they would probably see Pell as a fellow traveler with shared reactionary conservative values so while there would be some catholic members but its more about the shared values.

Fixed that for you.
@Mexicanbeemer
Compared to other Western countries, the extent of anti-environmentalist sentiment is greater here in Australia. Because in some regions of the country, such as the Hunter Valley and Central Queensland, mining and the fossil fuels industry is seen as integral part of a way of their way of life. This is becoming even more so, due to the high unemployment and underemployment in these regions. That is the only way I can explain the sentiment of the locals in Central Queensland, when the Stop Adani convoy came around. They saw the Stop Adani movement as a threat to their way of life.
I think the Greens core problem is that they cannot be seen to support anything that they deem to be pro-profit or right wing out of fear of losing support among its base so as a result they do best when they are targeting a ALP government.

And secret meetings, stunts and swipes at labor are about all they deliver. They have managed to get to a point where they are a road block on many issues. Climate change is real, climate change needs action, not another stunt.
