Newspoll have held off this week owing to the New South Wales election, resulting in one of the occasional three week gaps in their schedule. However, the fortnightly Essential Research will come through as normal this (i.e. Monday) evening. In other non-New South Wales news, moderate faction nominee and Christopher Pyne ally James Stewart won the Liberal preselection for Sturt on Saturday, consistent with expectations and despite resistance from conservatives who sought to make hay from the fact that the moderates had chosen not to back a woman. We also have a front page headline in The Australian this morning that reads, “Gladys triumph: PM eyes May 11”. Beyond that, over to you.
Monday morning madness
Sturt preselection and election date talk – but above all, a new venue for general discussion of the political situation.
TPOF
I’m sure you’re right.
Lizzie,
The party was originally (when founded) simply called “The Shooters Party”. The rest was added later.
I agree with pRED, Truscott and a r. – all modern weapons systems are obscene in the amount of damage they can inflict on people & place – just look at Vietnam(and neighbours with Agent Orange), Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria etc.
Unfortunately the vested interests seem to win out, just about every time.
As a marketing ploy FFS works better i think!

What happened to Pegasus?
A highly regrettable altercation with C@t….painful for Pegasus, for which C@t has apologised…
Confessions @ #101 Monday, March 25th, 2019 – 9:26 am
She shared something deeply personal. Some ill considered responses followed.
I bet Dareto Tread would be itching to come in now that Trump has been personally cleared of collusion. This will be a fillup to him. There is no doubt that Mueller would know that Trump and his family are compromised, and overseas “assets”. The Trump Tower meeting, unreported to the FBI, sure looks like collusion. Being too amateur a campaign does not excuse this, I would have thought.
I guess Roger Stone and Julian Assange are off the hook, too.
Compare and contrast with Comey’s statement about Hillary’s emails.
Late Riser
FFS? Shows I’m not a natural swearer. I din’t even think of that. a r has the right idea.
briefly, Late Riser:
I missed all that. Just as well it would seem.
mundo@9:40pm
“50-50”. “I have got a bad feeling”
Don’t you have bad feeling of ALP chances all the time?
Lovey:
House Dems will subpoena Mueller then we will get some insights into his report.
poroti@9:57am
Possible. 🙂
Having trouble getting Poll Bludger to load. Often saying “server not responding”.
On medicare:
Yesterday I had a full MRI on brain and spine. No charge.
OK, so I’ll be paying for the specialists who diagnose later, but how lucky we are in Australia, compared with US, for example.
Can people please not do this, to anyone, ever.
Ooh – no holds barred now from Shorten. Giving Libs short shrift.
Given that the fish are mostly dead maybe they should omit the ‘Fishers’ bit.
lizzie, having lived in both I wholeheartedly agree with that. Profits before people should never be the foundation of a health system.
I turned on 103.9 just in time to here William say ‘thank you’.
It was well-modulated!
William
I’m puzzled as to why this:
“Oh please. This praise for 1 ‘day of silence’ after what happened yesterday are just vomitous.”
is acceptable, but this
“That’s not worth anything to It.”
is not.
lizzie, sorry for my ambiguous comment. I meant how grateful I am that we have Medicare.
lizzie
So you can tell someone “I had a brain scan…………………….they didn’t find anything” 🙂
lizzie @ #89 Monday, March 25th, 2019 – 9:22 am
Yeah, FFS would be much more marketable.
Labor’s Higgins candidate is a fantastic communicator!
LR
No probs…

Always reliable with the Dad jokes. 🙂

Yep, I went to my doctor with a list of ‘things which having been keeping me awake at night’ – after a series of Xrays, blood tests, various tweakings of medications, got the all clear for everything.
On one hand, this could be seen as a waste of time and money – on the other, I know that I have nothing to worry about, and some of these tests won’t need to be done again for five or six years.

It’s far from a waste of money. The development of pathology technology has proven a great boon to catching issues early. I wouldn’t wait 5 years though zoomster. I’m pretty sure yearly tests, at least blood tests, are recommended. Just to catch anything early.

Just a grease and oil change and you’re back on the streets!
The stupidity of a recent war:
https://original.antiwar.com/Brett_Wilkins/2019/03/22/killing-for-credibility-a-look-back-at-the-1999-nato-air-war-on-serbia/
By the way, yesterday I commented on a post by Pegasus in what I thought was a light-hearted way, but agreeing with her about a serious issue. To which she said ‘Fuck you’ back to me. I asked why and got a typical Nath reply full of sneer and empty of substance. Pegasus did not reply.
Putting things together later it seems to me that I appeared to make light of a personal experience she recounted. Unfortunately, I actually did not read what she said beyond the first paragraph. I noted she was about to say something personal at the beginning of the second paragraph and actually chose not to go there. I was more interested in commenting on the broader issue, which was about the veracity of a woman who suffers a sexual assault. Shortly after she asked William to delete the post so I never actually saw what she wrote.
So I did not read the whole post (and only commented on the first paragraph to agree with the point she made in it). My apologies to Pegasus if what I wrote appeared insulting or offensive. I did not intend it and I do not make light of peoples’ personal circumstances.

The most taxing thing was the little pile of forms to be filled in, and the fact that my hands went numb from keeping still for an hour. The noise of the machine was just bearable.
Just 9 months ’til Christmas.
Morrison again waving pamphlets
Just heard Morrison telling me that Shorten’s reckless emissions policy is going to cost me $9000 a year. Oh no! What am I to do.
If Bill Shorten doesn’t counter this forcefully, convincingly and soon it’ll run all the way to the election just like Tony’s $500…it doesn’t matter that it never shows up, the punters don’t remember that bit.
Anyway, over to you Bill.
It ain’t gonna fix itself.
“Just heard Morrison telling me that Shorten’s reckless emissions policy is going to cost me $9000 a year. Oh no! What am I to do.”
Firstly, check carefully. Was ScoMo’s mouth moving??
Evaluate credibility of his statement on that basis. 🙂
‘Just heard Morrison telling me that Shorten’s reckless emissions policy is going to cost me $9000 a year. ‘
Let me guess – lamb roasts are going to cost $100?

The stupidity of a recent war:’
This is one of the extremely few US/NATO bombing campaigns that had at the time, and continues to have, my full support.
Following the breakup of Yugoslavia the Serbs were into active genocide qua ethnic cleansing on several fronts. The Serbs had managed to hang onto the major part of the ex-Yugoslav war machine.
What stopped the Serbs was the NATO bombing campaign. The campaign was not directed at Serbian civilians. This is demonstrated by the relatively few civilian deaths. Had civilians been targetted the civilian death toll would have been enormous.
As I recall it, the clincher was dropping Serb bridges into the Danube using precision bombing. The Serbs twigged that their economy was going to be smashed. The Serbs have yet to forgive NATO for stopping them from recreating Greater Serbia on the bones of its enemies.
One reason for Serb outrage was that this campaign was practically the only campaign ever fought by the West against a Western state to protect (predominantly) muslims.
Of course the Greens in Australia would have deployed a Light Mobile Force to stop the various Serb genocides and ethnic cleansings…. except that the Serbs would easily have massacred the Greens Light Mobile Force.
Not that any inner urban leafy wealthy Greens actually propose to do suicide by way of the Greens’ defence policies. The Greens will leave that to the children of the Underclass who always figure highly in underfunded, underprepared, and underarmed cannon fodder scenarios.
Mundo – big problem for MOrrison is that the flip side of this scaremongering is that he obviously won’t do anything about climate change. He can’t have it both ways.
jenauthor @ #134 Monday, March 25th, 2019 – 11:27 am
Love that, Jen. Surely Labor can make fun of the blue pamphlet after the disaster of Abbott’s Real Solutions. What a heap of poppycock that was.

“Mundo – big problem for MOrrison is that the flip side of this scaremongering is that he obviously won’t do anything about climate change. He can’t have it both ways.”
That’s the logical inference, of course, but the rules of logic don’t apply to the Right. Morrison will say he’s got a policy that will fix it (Direct Inaction Revisited) and it will only cost $200 million per annum. The fact that it won’t stop a single CO2 molecule from escaping into the atmosphere is neither here nor there. The Murdochracy will actively support him, the ABC is too cowed to do anything and most of the rest of the media will just let it through to the keeper.
And of course no one will ask him how he got the $9,000 figure. It’s clearly absurd.
I think it’s time for SHorten to call it out. Morrison is lying or he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Probably both.
nath @ #92 Monday, March 25th, 2019 – 10:24 am
I hope so to, but why would she, given there’ll be a next time.
I heard what Morrison said it was one continues lie. He wanted to know if Shorten was going to use the Carbon credits that the LNP have achieved. He warned us that if we vote for Shorten that it will take years to fix just like it has taken years to fix the damage done last time (no mention of the GFC). It will cost us each $9,000 because of the ALP’s reduction in CO2. etc. etc. Oh and a blue Brochure in his hand.
I read that the word is federal Labor want Daley to remain ?
A bizarre decision given Daley’s failings.
This is the reward for lying for ScoMo? What a sleazy, lowdown set we have in charge.
There was not one bit of truth in his sermon.
They don’t want a public party shit-fight in the middle of a federal campaign… which makes sense.
Daley still needs to go.
Will Latham now replace Powline on Sunrise?
j341983 @ #148 Monday, March 25th, 2019 – 12:16 pm
Labor now has 2 unpopular leaders as a drag on their vote.
Good news for other progressive election candidates.
