Monday morning madness

Sturt preselection and election date talk – but above all, a new venue for general discussion of the political situation.

Newspoll have held off this week owing to the New South Wales election, resulting in one of the occasional three week gaps in their schedule. However, the fortnightly Essential Research will come through as normal this (i.e. Monday) evening. In other non-New South Wales news, moderate faction nominee and Christopher Pyne ally James Stewart won the Liberal preselection for Sturt on Saturday, consistent with expectations and despite resistance from conservatives who sought to make hay from the fact that the moderates had chosen not to back a woman. We also have a front page headline in The Australian this morning that reads, “Gladys triumph: PM eyes May 11”. Beyond that, over to you.

  1. Don’t tell me Red13 – you are a long term lurker but a first poster to support the veracity of this document that you risked your life to get to the public

  2. Dirt on Shorten?

Don’t they just have to ask the cream of the ALP for it ….. the ALP federal parliament leader …. the best of the ALP … mark latham?

I am sure shorten would have learned a lot from Latham and mark would have lots of stories to tell

  3. I have to admit I was disappointed to learn Berejiklian isn’t gay. For a brief moment I got to enjoy the fact that she had succeeded as a woman leader in a party that is women repellent, AND succeeded as a woman leader in a same sex relationship in a party where the large numbers of its MPs only a year or so ago were actively trying to thwart equality for same sex couples.

  4. I’m very sceptical of that documents authenticity. That said, on the content….does any one expect anything less from the Libs than the smear, skeer and fear that is referred to?

So, i reckon leak is a false flag, but does outline what everybody expected and where the Libs will go with Kill Bill.

  5. ‘Well, I can only assume the document is fake. If there was a Kill Bill meeting surely I would have been invited.’

Now that truly is a coffee splattering moment. Good laugh. Thanks

  6. imacca sadly that is the intention of posting that sort of false news on social media. It just reinforces and strengthens existing beliefs.

  7. “Free markets and reducing the scope of government”

And an organisation which Switzer promoted and was employed by as their spokesperson

Along with the female on the ABC program , the ugly side of society

And hopefully that is what Australians are seeing tonight and need to make decision on

  8. “It just reinforces and strengthens existing beliefs.”

Confirmation Bias Davidwh. One of the true scourges of the internet. 🙁

You see a lot of that on the various Climate Denialist sites.

  9. Apparently Teena Macqueen is a regular on Sky After Dark. I understand now why Craig Laundy has a ‘family matter’ he had to deal with..

  10. Tina McQueen is a laugh a minute. I’m not sure how she is helping her party. If you can explain it please let me know.

How long do you think the Daley step down can be milked by the media boosters of the LNP, state & fed?

    ———————————

The anti-Labor thrust in ABC TV news continues. Their 7 pm NSW news tonight spent an inordinate almost five minutes at the top of the newscast on Labor’s leadership after the party’s “poor showing” in Saturday’s election. The reporter said Daly was stepping aside to avoid a “messy” leadership stoush. This was even ahead of acknowledging the achievement finally of majority government by Gladys and her gang.

Later in an item on Labor’s policy on Medicare rebates there was a significant change from newscasts earlier in the day.

In the earlier clip, Bill Shorten concluded by holding up the Medicare card and stating that that card and not your credit card should govern how you receive health care. It was the kind of powerful image that TV news producers are always looking for. But in the major newscast at 7, they used an earlier part of Shorten’s statement without him showing the Medicare card.

Perhaps the lily-livered producers in TV news were afraid of being accused by the Coalition of helping Labor with another “medicscare.”

As a former journalist I am astonished at the way ABC news has been dumbed down in recent years and often is indistinguishable from the commercial channels. Apparently, as the commercial outlets are shedding production and reporting staff, the ABC in its search for ratings, is picking them up and they are bringing their news values to the national broadcaster.

  12. “the economy is strong”

That being the case why is the Cash Rate where it is at with the outlook for further reductions?

Why are the RBA Governors comments as they are?

Why has the 10 Year Bond Yield slipped a further 10 basis points today, to 1.74%, an indicator of recession?

And I could go on but you get the drift

Laughter keeps the wrinkles at bay. I’ll disappoint you tho. Can’t wait to see PM Bill in the Lodge.

Stunned look on kour faces here. Teena McQueen is almost every Liberal woman i met in the Unley Branch SA in the 70s. I thought they’d be extinct by now. My Lib frien dropped out thankfully.

  14. Fess

But shes the first to win an election in NSW.

Not the first woman to win a state/territory election in Australia though. Kate Carnell and Anatascia Palaszczuk.

  15. @IoM…..There would be a lot of people who want Abbott g.o.n.e. from politics…..a lot from his own side and there would be quite a few libs quite prepared to work for free to ensure it happens.

As you can see from lack of response to your post, there are some posters here who can say anything scandalous or false or outrageous and the response of regulars is deathly silence.

  17. An election must be in the winds as the Liberals send Arthur Sinodinos out everywhere. He’s their man on Qanda next week.

Yes but that ghastly McQueen woman said she was the first woman premier for NSW. She isn’t.

    And you forgot Anna Bligh.

Thanks beguiledagain for that info about Canada’s health system.

Britain introduced the NHS in the midst of post-war rationing, and now is dismembering it claiming it can’t afford it – it’s all a question of priorities
    —————

Exactly who is dismembering it. Not Labour I suspect.

And as for affording it, do you not think that Australia can afford that sort of real medicare system. Canadians with incomes above a certain level pay a levy and don’t seem to mind the fact that full medicare is financed out of consolidated revenue. They can relate to Bill Shorten’s statement today that your access to health care should only be governed by your Medicare card and not your credit card.

On the question of priorities: what greater priorities does government have that are more important than the health of its people.

  20. Bastiaan more so than Kroger because Kroger hung off Bastiaan’s coat tails to retain the Presidency, which was going to pass to Bastiaan post the Victorian State Election (and where Kroger had been so instructed)

    The Liberal Party, hey?

These are the types who control the agenda and appoint to positions

It is good that the public are getting some insight into the “hidden faces” because they are toxic driving Liberals from the Party – and, in my view, unelectable accordingly

“will be looking for dirt on Shorten”
They will re-cycle a lot of the “dirt” that went to their RC in the heat of the moment election campaign.

Will be interesting how both sides approach Setka and the allegations against him in an election campaign. Will the ALP support him or will the Libs attack and use him against Shorten. At the very least it blunts the attack of the liberals having a women problem. I wonder if the libs will go there.

  22. Fess

Not intentional to forget Bligh. There was also Rosemary Follet in ACT or the NT Chief Minister when Labor first won power up there.

  23. But shes the first to win an election in NSW.

Not the first woman to win a state/territory election in Australia though. Kate Carnell and Anatascia Palaszczuk.

    _____________________________

Palaszczuk has now won twice, including once from a dire position in Opposition.

Julia Gillard won in 2010. It may have been a minority government, but she was the one who formed it (another lie of Abbott and the Liberals that was peddled consistently by the media was that she did not win).

In the ACT, Rosemary Follett was the first Chief Minister and she later won an election as Chief Minister.

In the Northern Territory Clare Martin won from Opposition and then won again.

  24. This Teena McQueen needs to be on tv more – just so the Libs can lose more votes.

Who the hell thought it was good to have her on?

The Greens and ALP have decided to put One Nation last – the Liberal Party will do it on a seat by seat basis. The Liberal Party have no morality but we already knew that.

  25. Unley

    1970’s

So Gil Langley as the ALP State Member

And Bob Shearman had the leasehold of the pub on Unley Road (Bob unfortunately died too young trekking around Italy)

  26. I know that we have our disagreements over the Greens here, but that woman blew me away when she claimed the Greens and di Natale were racists. It’s clear that some Liberals think the Greens are more reprehensible than One Nation. I wonder how the disinterested swinging voters will see that trade-off.
