Newspoll: 53-47 to Labor

The second Newspoll for the year finds no continuation of the Coalition’s recent improving trend.

After a period of improving poll results for the Coalition, the latest Newspoll records a tiny shift on primary votes to Labor, but not another to alter their existing lead of 53-47 from a fortnight ago. Labor is up one point on the primary vote to 39%, after a three-point drop last time, while the Coalition is steady on 37%, retaining their two-point gain in the last poll. The Greens are steady on 9%, while One Nation is down a point to 5%, the lowest it’s been in a year. Scott Morrison’s personal ratings are improved, with approval up three to 43% and disapproval down two to 45%, and his lead as prime minister out from 43-36 to 44-35. Bill Shorten is down one on approval to 36% and up one on disapproval to 51%. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1567.

Reaching back into the ‘Sudmalis story’, was she given a Pair? If they then sneaked her back into Aus to vote, this seems typical Pyne-style dirty tricks.

Yeah LABOR gave them a pair according my local MP- Scomo was worried they might reneg on it . If Sudmalis is their “secret weapon” hiding in a office with the lights off at the taxpayers expense, that tells you how nutty this muppet show had become by Christmas.

  2. Jones will travel to Asia with his wife, fellow ABC presenter Sarah Ferguson, as she takes on a new role as the ABC’S China bureau chief.

“I love doing Q&A,” Jones said. “But going to China is an opportunity that is too good to miss.”

  3. “Rudd was quite happy to say exactly the same line a couple of gazillion times if that’s what it took.”

Say what you will about Rudd, you can’t deny he was/is a great political communicator. And the prize for repeating inane slogans a gazillion times ad-nauseum has to go to Tony Abbott.

  4. An observation;

Normally people are critical of the ABC running stories from the Australian,so it is quite amusing to read the criticism of them not running such a story. 🙂

Sudmalis and Macklin were in new York at at course held by the UN. there would naturally be a pair here. But, looks like the Libs were desperate enough to try anything to avoid a loss on the floor of Parliament.

    Don,

    Just passing through. 🙂

You have part of a story.

The Sheriff braces the dusty traveller carrying a pair of 🔫pistols 🔫(contrary to town ordinance 14a(ii)) and enquires his travelling plans.

Keep a sharp look out Barney the desperadoes from the Bar Nothing are not to be trusted.

And ⏪ (in spite of good usage) be kind to yourself. 🙅 (>‿◠)✌

  7. What Bowen said, courtesy of the Guardian:

    Chris Bowen:

We want to see sick people dealt with appropriately and getting the best in care and attention possible. We’ve also said that we want a ministerial discretion to be the final arbiter on this – hence we have supported the bill in the Senate.

I don’t think… As I said, I haven’t seen the AMA statement, but I doubt they’re criticising us for that. I think that they would be supportive of that. And the Leader of the Opposition is getting briefings today and if there’s further discussions to be had with other crossbench colleagues across the Parliament in terms of ensuring the two objectives are met, then he’ll have those.

But our position has been consistent. The Government’s gone to the lengths of leaking out classified documents or briefings to try politicise it. And that’s OK. We’ll vote for the right policy balance which will be done in the Senate and if there’s further discussions to be had, the Leader of the Opposition will have them.

…Well, the Coalition – well, it’s fear. That’s it. They’ve got one shot there – scare and fear. Now, we know that.

We know that’s what they’ll say and you’re right, it is what they’ll say. And Bill Shorten has made it very clear – a Shorten Labor government will not see the people smuggling trade restarted. We will not.

That means that we will have to make some decisions, that some people, including Labor voter, don’t agree with, like we’ve done on turning back the boats.

We’ll stick with the policies and we recognise that they’re controversial in some parts, but we think that they’re else in for an appropriate approach to border protection, but we’ll also act humanely.

As Anthony Albanese said this morning, it’s not always a choice on that. You can have strong policies on the border but you can act with decency. That’s what we’ve been doing with the Medivac Bill.

Peter Dutton can hold all of the press conferences he likes and we can see all of the leaking of classified information. Unprecedented to see classified information like that leaked on the front page of the newspaper. We’ll just make the case of good policy and we’ll let the people decide.

It seems to me that Labor are going to great lengths to signal it is prepared to compromise because it knows that Morrison and Dutton won’t. Indeed, the more Labor makes noises about compromise, the more extreme and inhumane the Coalition bastards sound. It sets Labor up to support the doctors’ proposal (with or without amendments) and look like good guys while still maintaining the tough on boats line.

I could be wrong, but it is hard to see what advantage (certainly given the disadvantages of doing so) would accrue to Labor to buckling to Morrison and Dutton, particularly as they are making it harder for themselves to even offer specious changes, let alone ones of substance.

Not only no advantage to Labor in buckling.

The absolute worst that can happen for Labor in backing Phelps is making Morrison look like May on Brexit.

The UK Tories are desperate to avoid a general election just like Morrison is

Both are using Trumpian tactics to appeal to a racist base.

    Here they think that’s Hanson.
The polls have been clear. Weeks of fear about Phelps Bill have seen Labor’s primary vote go up one and Hanson’s vote collapse.

Of course Franking Credits played a part, but the message is clear. That base is small and falling.

Hopefully a score here will get him into the NSW side for the tail end of the Shield season, where he will excel and put his name forward for the Ashes tour, where he rightly belongs.

I dont think the ALP will “buckle” on this. Maybe propose some changes from what the Senate passed but its legit for the HoR to do that. The Muppets have well and truley dug in on the AS medical bill and left themselves no room to manuver without embarrasment, they must oppose the lot according to ScoMo.

C@t, as I explained to GG it was a lighthearted joke about how Jones expressed himself. As I knew that Sarah Ferguson was going to China – and I thought everyone else who posts regularly here did too – it was obviously not serious speculation or comment on the marriage.

For the other posters here who self-importantly posit themselves as moral guardians who purport to enforce the word of ‘God’:

I read William’s injunction yesterday morning. I had not posted a single thing on the issue that upset him because I was out at a fabulous ACO concert and, when I finally read it, was uninterested in the subject matter. As far as I’m concerned every public figure (whether I like them or not) is entitled to their private life unless they are actively preaching the exact opposite in their public life. Barnaby Joyce probably is a good example. The subject of the other night’s speculation is not, regardless of my personal views of their character.

  31. The government’s line is that they’re objecting to the bill because it removes the final decision from the Minister.
