BludgerTrack: 54.4-45.6 to Labor

The BludgerTrack poll aggregate gets new state data from Newspoll and a recalibration for the post-Turnbull era.

I’m most of the way through a thorough overhaul of BludgerTrack, which I’m commemorating here with a new post despite there having been no new national polls – although the latest state breakdowns from Newspoll are newly added to the mix. What’s different is that the Scott Morrison era trends are now being determined separately from the Malcolm Turnbull era. I haven’t yet brought the display on the sidebar up to speed, but follow the link below and you will observe separate, disconnected trend measures for the two periods (you may need to do a hard refresh to get it working properly). Where previously BludgerTrack was recording the post-coup period as an amorphous surge to Labor, now there is nuance within the Morrison-era polling – namely, a brief period of improvement for the Coalition after the post-coup landslip, followed by a shift back to Labor.

Other than that, the back end of BludgerTrack is now a lot more efficient, which means I will no longer have any excuse for not updating it immediately when a new poll is published. My next task is to get the leadership ratings back in action, as these have been pretty much in limbo since the leadership change, for a want of sufficient data on Scott Morrison to get a trend measure out of. There should also be further state-level data along soon-ish from Ipsos, which will be thrown in the mix whenever the company we must now call Nine Newspapers publishes it.

  1. Naked appeal to the base? Check. Staged family pictures? Check. Exclusive drop to News Corp tabloids? Check. Watch out ⁦@ScottMorrisonMP⁩ Peter Dutton has decided you are finished and he’s coming for you.

  2. If there was ever a time to try new players, it will be versus Sri Lanka who are really shit.

Those players must have the technique to play swing bowling in the UK which rules out heaps of the existing 11 and Burnswho could not cope v South Africa in Australia.

No doubt Cricket Australia is also organising players to take up some county contracts in the first half of the Pommie season.

  3. With JulieB doing her ocean splash stunt, and now Potato filling the NewsCorp tabloids across the nation, ScoMo is being challenged from the Left and Right of his divided party. Surely he can’t allow this ragtag mob to bring their knives to Canberra to reprise the “Ides of March”.

He must call a snap election on Australia Day, and as his centrepiece, get back on the bus..

I have always been a fan of “Van” Morrison. “Bus” Morrison not so much.

  5. Yep, if you can deduce a whole policy and actions wrt a federal Labor government, now and into the future, Rex Douglas is the man for you! The sweeping statement, with the tiniest bit of evidence to sustain the thinnest of arguments, a specialty.

  6. Pucovski is 20. He’s played 8 first class matches. Yes a 180 and 240 indicate the lad has something and can clearly bat long. But even if he wasn’t suffering health issues that is nothing like enough to be throwing him into the Test side. After half a dozen games you would have thought Travis Dean was a world beater.

There are a (very) few batsmen in the Shield that have shown consistency over several years. Burns has obviously had a go and a few struggles at test level, but even in his struggles he’s performed better than Finch ever will. Patterson has only recently broken a long run without a ton, but even then was scoring a shit load of 50s and averaging more than pretty much anyone in the Shield and batting a lot of time even if he wasn’t converting . Lehmann is a little hot and cold, but a better bat than a fraud like Labuchagne by so much it isn’t funny. And if they simply decided that a short term pick until Smith got back was reasonable they could go the Adam Voges route and select White.

  7. Maybe the Cricket Selectors could dig Bradman up and play him? Just like the Libs did with Menzies during Wentworth??

    Worth a go.

  8. “WWP
He will probably be playing for the Scorchers against Hobart tonight in Launceston.”

Yeah so long as it isn’t one of the fixtures Evil Rupert and his empire of racism and hate has stolen off to pay tv (and only available to those willing to financially support Rupert’s racism and constant attacks on democracy) I’ll be watching my scorchers. The women have had a really bad season so far.

I’m still waiting for you to provide a link to back up your statement that Michael Daley & NSW Labor support pill testing….??

…or were you peddling fake news ?

  10. “There are a (very) few batsmen in the Shield that have shown consistency over several years.”

The whole pull them in years too early, spit them out, pull them back in, spit them out, then measure them by their averages including the times they were selected too early and spat out too quickly.

If you are sure a youngster is going to be a star, yeah pull him in early, but accept he wont have the skills and technique to average 75 in all conditions from day one. You’ve chosen to have him learn on the job, don’t be surprised, you know, when he has to learn on the job. I would say give him 3 years, maybe a rest or two, but tell him he won’t be dropped on form in that three years.

  11. WWP
Maybe its time just to train a group of players purely to play test matches only and no other form of cricket. Probably unlikely though.

  12. “…or were you peddling fake news ?”

No one does more fake news than you surely you can spot it? You’ve got to be the SME (subject matter expert). Obviously reality, facts and analysis you are laughably bad at.

  13. If we haven’t got any ‘test match’ batsmen in form why don’t we just pick the highest scoring big bash batsmen ?

We could put on a quick fire 300+ each time and give our bowlers at least a chance. 😉

  14. ‘The Skull’ Ross

Old Skull. You couldn’t miss him on the hill at Lidcombe in his Dragons jersey when we played Saints. Always had a good bit of personal space around him even when the crowd was overflowing onto the bike track. Definitely an identity.

You may remember another name from that unsavoury crowd Jim Saleam from National Action stood in the Longman by election.

Seriously, could Elysse Perry bat at 6? I recall she got Brian Lara out LBW in a charity game.

    *************************************************

Are there any actual restrictions that would not allow a women to play in the test team ??????

    Listen to experts!

Michael Daley says NSW Labor will explore pill testing if elected

NSW Opposition Leader Michael Daley says Labor will listen to the experts when it comes to drug enforcement, and has not ruled out exploring pill testing if it’s elected to government.

That’s not quite ‘supporting’, as C@tmomma stated, but at least they haven’t ruled it out just yet.

Interesting idea. I don’t think the international calendar can support three games. Also I don’t think you could demote 20/20, say by having an annual or bi-annual champions league. It would really only leave 1 dayers to be demoted.

I’d be inclined to end international 1 dayers, and push the big bash franchises down into the domestic one dayers, with mens and womens teams, but the idea isn’t to bring in the international super stars or test players, it is to bring up as wide a pool of talent from grade cricket as you can. Run the competition a bit like the WBBL where you have like a carnival of games over three days around a weekend. The free to air TV broadcast can rotate between games a bit like an Olympic coverage, and you could have a highlights package show.

Start this competition the weekend after the last footy final. I’m not sure there is a lot of time, maybe 4 – 6 weeks you’d need to start and finish. I honestly think done right this product could pay for itself.

Then you’ve got zero 1 dayers and all you have to do is weave the tests, shield and big bash games through the summer for maximum revenue.

  20. “That’s a very weak cheap shot WWP. ”

I call it as I see it. Everyone has a right to free speech but you can’t expect to be shielded from the consequences.

  21. Wow that Scorchers / Thunder WBBL game was a fantastic game of cricket, wish I could have found the time to get down into the valley to enjoy it, but what I could watch free on my computer was fantastic. That was truly amazing and no way did the Scorchers deserve that win, but that just made the closing overs even better.

  22. ‘Flexibility’ = part time staff.
‘Value for money = poorly paid staff.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) announced on Friday afternoon that Serco, a company with a chequered corporate history, would help run its contact centres under a two-year contract.

The decision would put the company at the frontline of the NDIS, interacting frequently with people with disability and service providers, many of whom are still grappling with a vast, complex and sometimes confusing scheme.

“Sourcing our contact centre services from Serco will give ongoing flexibility, responsiveness and value for money,” the NDIA said in a statement.

But the decision has outraged disability rights campaigners, who say Serco’s poor history abroad and its lack of experience in disability should have precluded it from any role delivering the landmark scheme.

People with Disability Australia co-chief executive, Matthew Bowden, said he was “gravely concerned” that Serco would, like other third-party providers, fail to uphold the values, objectives and principles underpinning the NDIS.

Market-oriented reforms, particularly in the provision of human services like health, education and public safety, have begun with a working system and replaced it with a string of failed experiments.

  23. WWP
A big part of the set up is revenue.Thats why the BBL is played in the school holidays to maximise family revenue at all the venues around Australia. The emphasis on the short form of cricket definitely affects the way players go about their batting especially in test matches. That was why the idea of having one day players and test players completely separated could help Australia in the long form of the game. I suppose this would be unique as no other countries have adopted a system like that yet.

  24. Thank you, BiGD.
    (* ̄︶ ̄*)

I mean, Rex Douglas couldn’t do his own checking on the internet, could he? It obviously wasn’t that hard. No, he’d prefer to go for a Gotcha against Labor. Then, even when you provide the proof, it’s still not good enough for Rex Douglas, he’s got to nit pick at it.

What a lame excuse for a serious contributor to the conversation he is!

Basically, installing Peter Dutton as leader is the only thing that the Liberals could possibly do to piss the electorate off more than it already is, so his ascension is assured.

  26. “A big part of the set up is revenue”

Agree completely, and I could be wrong but I think if you drive the domestic one day comp, using the BBL franchises, and try to fund it as a tv product to fill a lot of screen time between the end of the footy season and the start of the real cricket season, you might if it takes off over a few years be able to also attract some local attendance to boost it.

  27. Rex Douglas @ #333 Sunday, December 30th, 2018 – 11:48 am

a lot more than just ‘exploring’ 😆

That’s your problem Rex, you don’t do nuance.

    What’s Labor’s drug policy?

    “What the experts say.”

What do the experts say about Pill Testing?

It seems that they are supportive of it.

Now drug policy is one the Conservatives love to use as a scare campaign and so he has clearly articulated Labor policy without giving the Government anything they can twist politically.
