Newspoll: 55-45 to Labor

After a Victorian election result decided entirely on state issues, a poll shows the Coalition doing every bit as badly at federal level.

A weekend to forget for the Coalition has been compounded by Newspoll’s finding that its federal operation is down yet another point, putting Labor’s lead at 55-45. Its primary vote is down a point to 34%, the equal lowest since the 2016 election, while Labor is steady on 40%, the Greens are unchanged on 9% and One Nation are up two to 6%. Scott Morrison’s lead as preferred prime minister is down slightly, from 43-35 to 42-36. Nonetheless, Scott Morrison’s personal ratings have improved since a fortnight ago, with approval up four to 43% and disapproval down five to 42%, while Bill Shorten is up two to 37% and steady on 50%. The poll will have been conducted Thursday to Sunday and the sample around 1700, although it’s not specified in the online report.

UPDATE: The sample size was 1717.

  1. Guytar,
Thank you. I was not aware of the student strike, that is going to have an impact
Many will never vote for the Liberals when they get the vote, Turn them on when young and they don’t tend to go back when older

‘Beltway’ is the motorway that wraps around Washington DC. Calling something a beltway issue is to describe it as a matter only of concern to Washington DC and politicans. Like the way Scott Morrison refers to issues as ‘the Canberra Bubble”

  3. I suspect many won’t be at all impressed with the treatment metered out to Julia Banks. I hope
she turns on her former colleagues in similar fashion to how they’ve bad-mouthed her, starting
with voting to have the Reichsmarschall referred to the HC. Last night’s Sky News After Dark
was a disgrace, with an extremely inarticulate Joyce leading the charge. Although now a lowly back-bencher come envoy, he needs to smarten himself up, with a long period of abstinence.

Australia’s population is growing fast, ticking over 25 million in August 2018. And as the population increases, it is also becoming more diverse.

At the time of the 2016 Census, Australia’s population comprised people from more than 250 countries and 300 different ancestries. Almost half the population were either first- or second-generation Australian, and more than 300 different languages were spoken in homes.

The rumours yesterday were that she’d run in Deakin. But I reckon Lao makes a good case for Kooyong being a better electorate.

Julia Gillard no longer has majority in House of Representatives. Suspension vote on no confidence 73/71. She should resign. Election now!

  9. In case this hasn’t been pointed out by another Bludger, John Howard’s sledge at Victoria is farcically ignorant. This month, Charlie Baker, the Governor of Massachusetts was re-elected to a second term in a 66% landslide. Baker is a Republican.

Btw, Groundhog Day is a quirky tradition that occurs in a small town near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. America’s media observe the behaviour of a groundhog (named Phil, of course) to learn if their springtime weather conditions will commence soon. It is not a national celebration like Thanksgiving or Halloween. However, following the 1993 hit Andie MacDowell/Bill Murray comedy of the same name, Groundhog Day has carried the slang meaning of someone falling into a spell where one wakes up to it find it is the same day or event commencing over again and again and again …….. -:)

  10. Eric Abetz accuses Julia Banks of “biting the hand that feeds her”. It has obviously been a very long time since Erica has had to earn his living from somewhere other than the public purse, and be unable to imagine a better gravy train than a gig in our national Parliament. I would bet a lot of money that Julia Banks took a pay cut from her private sector income, to go down to the $200k-odd she gets as an MP. And she has only been doing this gig for a couple of years, following a distinguished legal and corporate career of some 30 years.

What a patronising git Eric Abetz is.

Phelps says “Boo!” and Pyne scurries away.

  12. IIRC, Banks was the person overheard saying WTTE of;

    I can’t believe I’m supporting this man!

during the last attempt to refer the Potato. 🙂

The Libs running a small-scale war against the x-bench. Idiotic. They need the x-bench more than the x-bench need them. They are trying to bully the House. They will fail. They have practically ensured that Dutton will be referred.

  14. Well said Michael A. Abetz would be preparing wills as a small town solicitor if he did not become a student politician and work his way onto the gravy train for mediocre lawyers.

  15. These brave men just ran away! 🙂

These three were named by Sarah Hanson-Young yesterday as among, in her view, the worst offenders of throwing out disparaging remarks.

  16. Also on this month’s American election, the Democratic Party’s Blue Wave keeps on rolling along! It has won the penultimate remaining House of Representatives district (New Mexico 2) which raises the party’s net seat gains to 39.

The last undecided district is California 21 , where the Democratic Party candidate took over the lead after counting resumed on Monday.

  17. Is there any chance that Julia Banks will stand for the Senate at the next election. Would she have a shot? If not, I assume she would run as an independent in a safe liberal seat (plenty of Lib voters to peel off)

  18. briefly

Was once told by somebody who knew these things that at the time the Mandurah Ford dealer was the biggest seller of imported F-trucks in the country.

Mandurah is of course the main centre on Hastie’s electorate of Canning and also home I believe to a few ON supporters. There would be a few red necks down that way

  19. BiGD

‘So the Cockup is really just allowing him and his type to be in the Senate!’

Yeah. When you bat with a runner cockups become an occupational hazard.

  20. Barney in Go Dau:

    [‘I can’t believe I’m supporting this man!

during the last attempt to refer the Potato. ‘]

    That’s a promising signal.

Now she needs to unsupport him, getting in Mal’s good books, who might support her campaign as an independent.

  21. Former PM John Howard:
“…Victoria has had a history for quite some years now, some decades, in fact, of being slightly more to the centre-left – the Massachusetts of Australia, some people call it.”

Johnny is probably referring to the Liberals last Saturday experiencing a Massachusetts Moment, when their lights went out.

It will be good if they win that last one. +40 seats has a much stronger psychological impact than +39 seats.

The descriptors being used by reactionary commentators and MPs when talking about women in the Liberal Party voicing their concerns only serve to reenforce those concerns… sexist language and sexist attitudes. #auspol

So it seems that despite Briefly’s pathetic protest, Western Australia is redneck central!

I don’t think there a redneck central in Australia. Sadly you can find them everywhere.

Cockups can be off the bat, byes or overthrows.
    O’Sullivan’s was an overthrow, IMO.

What Barry O’Sullivan said about SHY is despicable.
