Newspoll: 55-45 to Labor

A world of hurt for the Coalition from Newspoll, with voting intention deep into crisis territory and Scott Morrison’s standing continuing to decline.

The Australian reports this fortnight’s Newspoll is even worse for the Coalition than last time, with the Labor lead now at 55-45. Labor now holds a five point lead on the primary vote, being up one to 40% with the Coalition down one to 35%, while the Greens and One Nation are steady on 9% and 6% respectively. Despite/because of last week’s charm offensive in Queensland, Scott Morrison’s personal ratings continue to deteriorate, being down two on approval to 39% and up three on disapproval to 47%. His lead as preferred prime minister has also narrowed, from 43-35 to 42-36. Bill Shorten is down two on approval to 35% and steady on disapproval at 50%. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1802.

Also out today are the federal voting intention numbers from the YouGov Galaxy poll of Queensland, for which state voting intention numbers were provided yesterday. This has the two parties level on two-party preferred in the state, which is unchanged on the last such poll at the tail end of the Malcolm Turnbull era. The Coalition is up a point on the primary vote to 38%, with Labor steady on 34%, One Nation down one to 9% and the Greens steady on 9% (also included as a response option is Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party, scoring all of 1%). The poll also finds 29% saying they would be more likely to vote Coalition now Scott Morrison is Prime Minister, with 25% opting for less likely and 42% for no difference. The poll was conducted Wednesday and Thursday from a sample of 839. The Courier-Mail’s report on the poll can be found here, though I wouldn’t bother if I were you.

UPDATE: The Australian also has Newspoll results on becoming a republic, which records a dramatic ten point drop in support since April, from 50% to 40%, with “strongly in favour” down from 25% to 15%. Opposition is up from 41% to 48%, although strong opposition is steady at 22%.

Either the coalition has forgotten the political cost of that first budget, or ministers are well aware of it but don’t care because they assume the next election is lost anyway and have decided to settle some scores on the way out.

Just highlights that despite the leadership changes, nothing has changed, the ideology remains the same as when Abbott came to power. 🙁

I have to say, the cut in funding to Foodbank – and we are only talking about small numbers that makes a huge difference – is a disgraceful decision. No fly in and out spin over substance bus trip through QLD and the funds saved would have been enough for Foodbank.

BREAKIN’: 8 of Mueller’s prosecutors are workin’ on a federal holiday today and Michael Cohen suddenly shows up in D.C. today with an attorney in tow.

    Something big is happenin’!

Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal attorney, mysteriously arrives in Washington, D.C.

Cohen has previously participated in multiple interview sessions totaling more than 40 hours with investigators from the office of the special counsel Robert Mueller in Washington, D.C., and federal prosecutors in New York City, sources have told ABC News.

The two campaign finance violations are connected to Cohen’s role in alleged hush money payments during the presidential campaign to two women who allegedly had affairs with Trump years ago.

At a plea hearing in August, Cohen told a federal judge that the payments to the women were made “in coordination with and at the direction of a candidate for federal office,” referring to Trump.

“I participated in this conduct,” Cohen said, “for the principal purpose of influencing the election.”

  4. I believe that LNP MPs are essentially selfish. They will do anything to stay in power and boost their income. Any little benefit to the voters is sheer coincidence.

The abuse of the US Military and US soldiers for Trumps’ desperate race baiting incitement campaign is an outrage. Every news organization should have cameras and reporters at the border covering this farce. This abuse should be the subject of hearings in the House .

I’m sure the Dems will get around to it eventually. 🙂

I was just wondering what the troops are doing there atm? Playing tiddlywinks?

  6. That’s part of the problem, they think they are beyond questioning!

Truth has never been relevant to these people. That they have risen to high levels with that attitude speaks loudly about accountability in todays society. That they hold onto that attitude even when questioned by the FBI with the direct knowledge they can and will be charged with perjury further shows that society has allowed these people to develop an extreme arrogant sense of impunity to their BS.

We have allowed, both in politics and the corporate world ,crooks and liars and incompetent ladder climbers and toadies to reach the top rungs because the usual checks of accountability and responsibility have been skewed, bent, corrupted and rotted over time.

  7. Tom the first and best
The state seat of Moonee Ponds was sufficiently middle class to elected Liberals to the seat of its name 1955, 1958, 1961 and 1964 (and only fell to the ALP in 1967 because the safe ALP seat of Flemington was abolished in the redistribution, with some of its territory ending up in Moonee Ponds). Essendon, just to the north, was Liberal for 20 years from 1955 and again for the first term of the Kennet Government

From Foodbank to universities, the coalition has returned its 2014 budget mindset, with spending cuts aimed at constituencies perceived to be pro-Labor.

That mindset never went away, the Coalition just triangulated what they could get away with by taking smaller measures which added up to approximately the same thing, then hid behind Malcolm Turnbull as they went about their dirty work. They’re trying a similar thing now with Scott ‘Happy Camper’ Morrison but it’s not working.

  19. BREAKING NEWS

The latest Liberal Party Leadership Challange has been delayed until 2GB Shockjock Allan Jones returns from sick leave.

Challenger Peter Dutton said he would delay his challenge to Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, until Mr Jones returned to work following an extreme bed wetting incident after the Newspoll results were published.

  20. “From Foodbank to universities, the coalition has returned its 2014 budget mindset, with spending cuts aimed at constituencies perceived to be pro-Labor.”

The 2014 Budget came out just after a smashing electoral victory for the Coalition. I always regard that budget as the template for what they want to do as soon as it becomes politically possible. That plus the 75+25 point IPA wish list (those that haven’t been done yet).

It’ll all come out in full once again in the 2019 Budget should the Coalition win the 2019 election.

  21. Simon² Katich®:

I got the feeling that PVO felt the need to disguise his leanings on Sky, his endorsement of Rann evidence thereof.

  22. There have been a few stories around in the last few days that suggest Alan Jones’ bosses have been wondering whether he is worth the expensive trouble he causes.

No matter how much I might dislike somebody I would never wish ill health on them. But if the Parrot is silenced it would be a very good thing.

  23. Original Gurdian article on foodbank cuts has been shared nearly 45.000 times on social media. Plus, resharing, likes, comments and mainstream media also reporting it would have left no chance other than a backflip. Such a small thing spreading like wildfire.

FFS, you have to KNOW you have fwarked up big time when people are STILL talking about how bad a failed budget was 4 years on.

And the Foodbank / Uni’s thing?? Seems they want “announceables” and they are funding them by shifting and reallocating $ while making it appear to be new funding they have available because they are “growing a strong economy”.

Actually, rather transparent and they are getting pinged on it quickly. The Foodbank thing….its a place they just didn’t have to go and are taking pain all out of proportion to the funding they cut. On the University $ they seem to be mainly pumping QLD’s way? Helps buy out Katter , but thats a short term hit. He wont stay bought if he knows he has them over a barrel.

Hmmmm…maybe an election early, before they have to do a Budget that no-one will believe in anyway is actually their best option?? 🙂 While they may…..possibly…be able to spin it like they have some credibility left???

  25. No matter how much I might dislike somebody I would never wish ill health on them.

Not even a little bit of ill health?
A non life threatening but untreatable fungus? Or chronic bowel incontinence perhaps?

  26. Al’s had quite a bit of illness of late. I get the feeling that there’s more to it than a bad back. One positive thing I will say about him is that I wrote to him some thirty years ago, with my letter not being very flattering. To his credit, he wrote back almost straight away and in a most respectful manner. On the down side, he’s been a ferocious warrior for the Right, giving the Left no quarter.

I hardly ever agree with BB but he is spot on in this case. Awful stuff to wish cancer on people.

  32. There is a simple reason that Labor is so far ahead in the polls on 2PP

Its a reason that Murdoch yes both Lachlan and Rupert have not realised.

The Marriage Survey showed that the issues that Essential has polled is an accurate reflection of how voters are thinking.

The LNP are on the wrong side of those issues. This is then reflected in the polling. This is then reflected in elections
Neo Liberalism is dead and the voters are moving to send the message of that. No amount of propaganda is going to change that.

You are not going to have a right wing Australia. Its a country that just rejects that. The “yoof” and the older generation reflect this.

We truly are a country that believes in a fair go and when the mask slips and the LNP shows its not about a fair go they suffer in the polls. The best they can do then is to drag out the both sides are the same mantra on people’s trust in politicians.

  34. “Hmmmm…maybe an election early, before they have to do a Budget that no-one will believe in anyway is actually their best option?? While they may…..possibly…be able to spin it like they have some credibility left???”

If, as expected, the election is held in May next year, the Budget will be postponed, most likely to August. Even if the election is held in March, the Budget will be postponed. That’s when we’ll find out who’s paying for all the cash being splashed around now if the Coalition wins. HINT: not big Coalition donors.

Note: This last time we had a Federal election in March (1996), the Budget was put back to August.

  35. There is a lot of back and forth about the ill heath of Alan Jones and how unbecoming it is to wish him badly. Please, this is simply a case of applying their own standards, nothing else.
Very hard to complain when this was Mr Chaff bag himself

There is a lot of back and forth about the ill heath of Alan Jones and how unbecoming it is to wish him badly. Please, this is simply a case of applying their own standards, nothing else.

It makes it a bit hard to assert that your side of the argument is morally superior when you indulge in the same behaviour 🙁

  37. A couple of thoughts about Turnbull’s, as well as a few starry eyed fans’ attempted rewriting of history and claims that Turnbull was poised to win the next election.

Firstly, the much vaunted 51-49 TPP figure in newspoll was happening during the long winter recess, and the pattern for this government has always been improvement/status quo in the polls while ever parliament is not sitting, and hits in the polls whenever they are sitting. Furthermore, at the time Turnbull was rolled, the coalition were once again self-destructing over a policy issue – in this case the NEG. Even if Turnbull had survived, he would have come out battered and bruised and humiliated over the NEG flip flopping. It seems unlikely that the next newspoll would not have reflected this chaos. Not to mention the fact that Turnbull had zero policy agenda once his corporate tax cuts had been effectively binned. Again, newspoll would almost certainly have picked up on this policy vacuum.

Secondly, what scenario does Turnbull and co actually mean when they pose the hypothetical “if he hadn’t been rolled”? Do they refer to a scenario in which all the players and the circumstances of his demise had remained in place – things like a pissed off Abbott hell bent on revenge, and a militant right wing of the party determined not to let a progressive like Turnbull hijack their party. Do they mean that all that was still in place, yet somehow Turnbull still survived? Or do they refer to a scenario in which Abbott and his band of wreckers were not even in the picture, and Turnbull had free reign to implement his great vision (whatever that was)? If its the latter, then its an alternative universe that is simply a waste of time even thinking about. The reality was, Abbott and co were already there, and so were the divisions in the liberal party, and so was Turnbull’s proven inability to heal those divisions in any way. Does anyone seriously believe that such a scenario wasn’t going to end in tears at some point? Does Turnbull seriously believe that he could have continued demurring on policy and continue letting the right in his party run amock – and somehow surge ahead of labor in the polls? A labor party who had an actual and well thought out policy agenda that was resonating with the public?

  38. I enjoy good health … well I think it is good.

What goes around comes around, they say.

That’s why I don’t even wish ill health on others.

I would much prefer the likes of my political bête noirs and the likes of Jones to be thoroughly discredited.

I see we are going to get some cabinet papers this year from the early Howard years. I hope to live long enough for the misdeeds of his later period to be revealed and his reputation thoroughly trashed. Best if he was still alive as well.

  39. Instead of deciding who is the worst human in regards to Alan Jones my view is lets just cheer the likely outcome of the end of a warrior of hate speech.

One megaphone demonising the poor muslims and the other marginalised groups.

Illness may be Jones saving face. The Macquarie media actions could be the real story behind it and I hope thats the case. Finally hate is losing commercial viability.
