Morrison 45, Dutton 40

Scott Morrison is Australia’s sixth prime minister in eleven years, having prevailed in the second round of the party room vote by 45 votes to 40. Julie Bishop was eliminated after the first round: there are reports the vote was Dutton 38, Morrison 36 and Bishop 11. Josh Frydenberg replaces Julie Bishop after nearly eleven years as deputy, having won 46 votes against 20 for Steve Ciobo and 16 for Greg Hunt. Over to you.

  1. who is in the new ministry? what do the Dutton- Abbott forces do now? another challenge tomorrow? sky news after dark version must be upset
What happens with Wentworth by election? there is a 10 to 15% swing from 2010 to 2013 which inflates the margin?

  2. I think the supporters of Dutton should be ashamed of themselves. Can’t they see what a model of Australia he would promote?

My late dad told me that when he did army officer exams (is there such a thing?) they studied things like the battle of Cannae.

I believe that these days they just insist you spend a month as a member of a political party. Any party will do. You get extra credit if you tried for preselection.

  4. This discussion of education reminds me how conservative politicians always bemoan the poor state of teaching in this country, and in particular the lack of male teachers. Of course some have suggested in the past that if teachers were paid the same as CEOs (or Federal Parliamentarians) there would no such problem.

My solution is for all those politicians saying this, if they lose their seats at the next election, to retrain as teachers themselves and solve this problem. As the ones saying it are usually male themselves, they would “kill two birds with one stone”.

    …crickets…

  5. I think Turnbull massaging his progressive credentials is also about telegraphing to the right wing base/member “the lefty has been taken care of, you can unite behind the more acceptable of the far-right candidates”.

Bishop’s candidature might have been in the same strategic vein

  6. Interesting listening to work colleagues in the lunch room. Even engineers I perceive to be fairly conservative from SA country areas are dismayed. One just said “There is no way they will win the next election now”. He was relieved that Dutton had lost too, which shows how deranged the thinking of the Qld Liberals is.

  7. One of Cormann’s favourite expressions is, “I believe …”

Maybe he might start to question his beliefs?

I think Turnbull massaging his progressive credentials is also about telegraphing to the right wing base/member “the lefty has been taken care of, you can unite behind the more acceptable of the far-right candidates”.

Nah. He’s highlighting their failures and stoking the fire. He was unequivocal in condemning their race-baiting tactics. It was the one redeeming part of his speech.

  9. Socrates:

Everyone I’ve spoken to today (most of them politically unengaged swing voters) is just stunned that this has happened yet again. Words like joke and embarrassment have been used a lot.

    The Liberal Parties Simon Crean.

Fifield the Liberal Parties Bill Shorten.

Only in terms of reading political currents in a party

  11. Farnarkeling
To quote his website “In essence, Farnarkeling is engaged in by two teams whose purpose is to arkle, and to prevent the other team from arkeling, using a flukem to propel a gonad through sets of posts situated at random around the periphery of a grommet. Arkeling is not permissible, however, from any position adjacent to the phlange (or leiderkrantz) or from within 15 yards of the wiffenwacker at the point where the shifting tube abuts the centre-line on either side of the 34 metre mark, measured from the valve at the back of the defending side’s transom-housing.”

Silly Mathias backed the wrong Nazi horse

Love listening to him justifying his stupid decision.

    Can talk under wet cement.

You’re probably not interested in my opinon, but nevertheless, I’m giving it.

    Cheers

  13. And waht will happen tot the little cockroach Pyne?

I’d be more than willing to take him out fishing. Taking him back?

  14. Oh, and thanks Vic for alerting to the new thread.

Love your posts – and despite my previour complete boredom with the Trump shite, I’ve become extraordinarily interested over time.

Oh, and aren’t the commentators more reporting in sorrow than in glee?

Sharp contrast to the blame-game in the RGR turmoil.

    Pigs

  15. Oooooh….

So much for Warren entsch signing simply because he wanted it all over with.

Talk about long memories: he signed “for Brendan Nelson”.

On behalf of? Or in memoriam?

  16. My MP Nicolle Flint is high up on that list at number 11. Boothby isn’t exactly Dutton territory and I hope Labor make the most of her treachery at the next election.

  17. I would imagine Entsch would know when the Minchin Faction started its machinations.

We know who to blame for climate change policy failure and never forget it.

  18. Cormann’s text and subtext on SKY

Even though I voted for Turnbull on Tuesday I was taken by surprise.
    —————————————————-

I did not know so many would vote for my friend Dutton and wanted to make sure I was still a minister. Then I realised after that Dutts could get up, and I would remain a minister so I brought down Turnbull reassured I could keep my position. thanks.

  19. ScoMo will sure up the Qld vote because ….. he likes football. According to Sky. I think he talks too fast for us Queenslanders. He will be seen as untrustworthy.

  20. Didn’t number 27, Karen Andrews only sign this morning?

Interesting the holdouts that signed after her.

And yes, Dio we need to send our local Member on holiday where she can get back to her fascination of killing things. 🙁

No doubt. Other comments in the lunchroom were much more sarcastic. I was just relating the comments from the conservative colleagues.

  22. Katharine Murphy: Liberals tear out the party’s heart and soul

This assumes the Liberal’s had a heart and soul to start with. This headline might need to be rethought.
