Newspoll: 51-49 to Labor

Malcolm Turnbull’s hitherto surging personal ratings take a turn for the worse, as both sides lose ground on the primary vote and two-party preferred remains as was.

The latest Newspoll, courtesy of The Australian, is the fourth in a row to show Labor leading 51-49 on two-party preferred, from primary votes of Coalition 37% (down two), Labor 35% (down one), Greens 10% (steady) and One Nation 9% (up two). Malcolm Turnbull’s previously surging personal ratings have collapsed – he is down six on approval 36% and up seven on disapproval to 55%, and his lead over Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister has narrowed from 48-29 to 44-32. Bill Shorten is steady on 32% approval, and down one on disapproval to 56%.

When will @TurnbullMalcolm and his ministers learn that, in a democracy, they can’t shut down criticism offered on the ABC just because they don’t like it?

So who in Govt contacted @insidersABC to insist that they take down the tweet of @lenoretaylor ? Who gave the ABC information that there had been due diligence with the @GBRFoundation in March? Was it @turnbullmalcolm or his office? Was it @SenatorFifield or @JoshFrydenberg ?

There is not one shred of evidence anywhere that anyone in the Turnbull Government spoke to the @GBRFoundation before 9 April. So @lenoretaylor ‘s observation was valid.

Today in #qt in the House of Reps – @Tony_Burke asked @JoshFrydenberg to

  2. Being married to Abbott pal and failed seminarian Chris Uhlmann was never the best couple of dot points on Gai’s CV. But good luck to her, and thanks for the service.

Given the gender balance rules in the ACT, it could be:

    Katy Gallagher – Senate
    Andrew Leigh – North
    John falzon – Middle
    Alicia Payne – South

    And on Alicia….

The field of candidates vying for Labor preselection in the seat of Canberra has grown, with the vice-president of the territory branch of the party Alicia Payne throwing her hat in the ring.

Ms Payne has worked as a senior advisor in the offices of Lindsay Tanner and Bill Shorten, and was most recently chief-of-staff to shadow families and social services minister Jenny Macklin, a role from which she is currently taking maternity leave.

As well as five years as a policy analyst at the Department of Treasury, the hopeful candidate started her career as a researcher at the National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM).

In an email to some Labor members yesterday, Ms Payne said she was “driven by a commitment to social justice”. The pitch emphasised her local credentials, pointing to a lifetime living in Canberra.

“I was born in Woden Valley hospital and this year I had my baby son there,” Ms Payne wrote.

  3. According to the Press Council, Buzzfeed is not even part of the Press Council, so I couldn’t make a complaint to the Press Council.

    Fuck sake.

I reckon under Labor it should be mandatory all media outlets should be accountable to Press Council otherwise it would defeat the purpose of it. Just like ACCC, TIO, etc.

I have previously suggested that they were front ending the ‘spend’ in order to be able to brag about a Budget surplus later on. At least that WOULD make some sort of skerrick of sense.

    With apologies to Walter Scott:

Oh, what a tangled web they weave
When first they practise to deceive!

“after Tony Abbott has his say on 7.30 tonight. And you can imagine that say will be quite heavy, given the public smackdown he was given by the PM in QT.”

My lasting memory of Abbott and Sales is Abbott being forced, after many repeated questions, to admit he had not actually read the document he was criticising. Couple that with the more recent Turnbull “footrubs” and my prediction for tonight is that Sales will attempt to make Abbott look foolish, in order to make Turnbull appear better by comparison.

Hints from Coalition sources that the govt will compulsorily acquire the Liddell power station and keep it open. Nothing innovative there and more taxpayers’ money thrown away..

Coalition sources claim the government will spend billions of public money on new coal-fired power stations, as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull tries to win support from his own MPs for his signature energy plan.

    https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/2018/08/13/coal-power-plants-neg/?utm_source=Adestra&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=PM%20Update%2020180813

Late last year I was in Collie (coal mining & power town in WA) and was having a couple of drinks with some turbine engineers who had recently been working at Liddel. I asked at the time about extending the life of Liddel and they said that AGL would be doing well to have it still working until 2022, never mind extending it beyond that.

  8. Poor Leigh Sales. Her protector Malcolm Bligh Turnbull could be out the door before she knows it. I wouldn’t fancy her chances after he goes. Neither Tony nor Bill have any time for Leigh.

Did not the former Liberal government spend a shit load of money trying to make the Collie Power Station last longer before finally giving it up as a bad joke on the taxpayer?

    Yep, $312m.

Disclosure of interest: the company I work for had a contract on this project and currently has a contract with Synergy.

Apart from the fact that even $444 million is a piss-in-the-wind of the Deficit, let’s say that’s the reason.

So, why be so secretive and obtuse about it? It’s as done all the time, isn’t it? Why go through all the pain they’re going through for something that’s a routine method of allocating money?

The CPG is making excuses for them, they’re clearly making excuses for themselves, lies (or at least stretches of the truth) are being put about, weasel words uttered … all for what? A tactic that governments employ all the time?

Something caused them to rush this through. Maybe they thought something else would happen, but when it didn’t they had to rush the GBRF through in virtual secrecy, as a second choice.

    Why?

Specifically it was the AB units at Muja, turbines 1 – 4, which were built in the 60’s. Units 5 – 8 at Muja were added in the early 80’s.

    I’ll be at Muja tomorrow.

This looks like a story about the NBN, but it’s also a story about boomers resenting anyone else getting a leg-up.

Without reading in detail (I skimmed) I’d say that she got screwed by Turnbull. So did her neighbours. And the win for Turnbull is the neighbours are now competing with each other and hating each other.

Multiple child refugees on Nauru are suffering from Resignation Syndrome – a rare and serious psychological illness, caused by trauma, where they withdraw completely from the world

Not in any way making light of these poor Nauru children’s condition of hopelessness, but as the planet grows less forgiving, Resignation Syndrome might set in for thousands.

Just speculating here. Back in June, an early election was still on the cards, maybe even with the option of cancelling the by-elections and going in August. They might have wanted to have this sorted, including any poison pills, as well as putting the money beyond retrieval, before any election was called.

I think you may have something there. I would expect more of this type of thing in the coming months.

I certainly felt they had cleared the decks in anticipation of an early election, but then the polls didn’t move / narrow until just recently (too late it seems).

Turnbull was looking at an exit strategy following 30+ lost Newspolls. What better for a committed environmentalist like Turnbull than a fully funded sinecure that involved saving the Reef.

    It’s not that complicated.

PMO complains to @InsidersABC about what @lenoretaylor said about #reefgate & gives wrong information to the show, causing the show to delete its tweet of Taylor’s comments.
Then Foundation itself then contradicts the PMO, & 2 ministers refuse to affirm the PMOs info in #qt

Pretty terrible look for insiders and the ABC more generally. Difficult to imagine a less fearless news organisation than the ABC.

  25. This is bad for the ABC. Not just a bad look. And it will run… questions in Committees etc…. it may encourage more to float to the surface so that they will not be able to pin it on one subordinate.

  26. Rowe has managed to make a cat look like a sea dragon. Or maybe vice versa. The only reference I don’t get is why K Mart?
I do like that Abbott and Joyce are breathing healthy CO2!

  27. Apparently Rooting King (apologies Roy and HG) uttered something about people who shop at KMart not being interested in climate change. Or it was in his book or something…

  28. Specifically, people in Kmart don’t care about the Paris Agreement.

Which is bullshit, and beggars belief why BeetRooter is given so much media airtime

  29. The GBRF says it raised $90 million; Josh Frydenberg says it raised $65 million. Clearly one of them is lying. Does anyone know which one?

  30. LR,
“Re the latest Lowe cartoon, does anyone know why KMart features?”
Barnaby said people that go to K-Mart aren’t interested in climate change.

  31. You can see an almost pincer movement on Trumble from both Friar and Beetrooter.

I have a feeling Turnbull might regret not calling an election for this weekend…

The $90 mil figure includes Grants from Governments while $60-65 mil figure is what they have fund raised.

It’s from the lower figure that people should be looking at to determine how successful their fund raising is.

So deduct $40 mil for costs they’ve only raised $20 mil.
