Essential Research: 54-46 to Labor

No change on voting intention from Essential Research, as respondents reject the government’s stance on company tax cuts.

No change this week on Essential Research’s two-party preferred result, which shows Labor maintaining a two-party lead of 54-46, although as usual we’ll have to wait until later today for primary votes. The pollster’s monthly leadership ratings find Malcolm Turnbull with 39% approval (up one) and 42% disapproval (down three), while Bill Shorten is on 33% approval (also up one) and 46% disapproval (also down three), and Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister is 42-47, down from 42-25 last time. As related by The Guardian, the poll finds 72% supporting company tax cuts being made conditional on pay rises; more disagreeing than agreeing that company tax cuts would lead to higher wages without prompting; most disagreeing that penalty rate cuts would encourage companies to hire more workers. A series of questions on the proposed Adani coal mine found 48% saying it should be assessed on its economic and environmental merits, 22% saying coal mining in the Galilee basin should be banned, and 13% saying all mines should go ahead subject to environmental approvals.

  1. @Wayne – if you’re going to be a troll at least be a) informed enough to make what you write credible or b) amusing.

    You’re neither.

    Bye.

  2. Gee, that DT headline’s going to go down a treat with the politically unengaged walking past the papers displayed in the shops tomorrow.

“Wait, he’s banning sex? Like, for everybody!?”

  3. U.S. tax authorities have requested documents from lenders and investors in real estate projects managed by Jared Kushner’s family, according to a person familiar with the matter.

They have gathered information from people who lent money and assembled investors for some Kushner Cos. real estate projects in New York and New Jersey, the person said. Those projects involve deals dating back to 2010.

The Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department issued the subpoenas within the past year, according to the person. The tax inquiry appears unrelated to other investigations that have since burst into public view. It began before Special Counsel Robert Mueller was appointed in May to investigate Russian election meddling. In a separate action around that time, U.S. prosecutors in Brooklyn sought information from Kushner Cos. about its use of a foreign visa program.

In the tax investigation, it’s unclear whether authorities are looking at Kushner business associates or the company itself.

  4. Bemused,I was on optus hfc originally and was glad to be shot of them. Their offshore customer service is appalling.
The last time i had a problem with the service I lost access for 3 weeks and found it so frustrating dealing with people who spoke English but could not understand it.
Long story cut short I ended up with a lady in their mobile phone division at Macquarie Park here in Sydney who helped get me to someone in Australia who sorted it quick smart.
    Nice credit too.

  5. I think that the Telegraph tells us that Rupert is not after Turnbull (yet) – it is trying to portray Turnbull as a strong PM – using the terms “Unload on…” and “orders him…”.

    Tom.

I have usually managed to get things sorted out fairly quickly.
I found that getting them to do a reset at their end, despite their protestations that it was all OK, usually fixed the problem. Unless of course everything was out in my area.

    @Tom

Daily terror called Turnbull ‘powerless’ and ‘frustrated’. Not terms that portray him in a positive light.

Yes, they did – to alleviate him from the blame. It portrays him as unloading.. and Ordering.. etc, but being powerless to actually do anything. A case of let’s all feel sorry for poor Malcolm – he’s shown passion and strength, but is powerless.

    Tom.

  8. I just watched on old episode of Front Line on ABC Comedy. It was the one with the Mike Moore interview of John Hewson and the living legend Ugly Dave Gray. Very funny, especially the reference to Darren Hinch.

  9. TPG call centre is offshore as well but have only had to deal with them re the account. Pleasant to a fault. Phillipines.
Coming up to 2 years and apart from the battery no problems.
Apparently nbn chose cheap and nasty. In the process of getting replaced.

  10. Barnaby Joyce will now only be remembered for shagging his staff and getting her pregnant. How could anyone take him seriously ever again.A laughing stock.

    A battery in your router/modem?
I gave up bothering and just run off the mains.

  12. “Barneys fiscal position”

Never, in the history of human conflict,
has a man presented himself so stupidly,
    so comprehensively,
    and with such inarticulate idiocy
for taking the rough end of very large pineapple from their ex,

    …………………………….

In a financial settlement sense of course. 🙂

  13. Bemused no the emergency backup battery. Apparently it is optional now. Mine is still under warranty.
Backup generator in the exchange does not work for fibre the way the old copper network was covered for blackouts.

  14. The nodes for fttn are powered as I understand it because fibre runs to the node but doesn’t provide power for the copper running to the premises. Hence all the issues they had getting the power companies to provide power to the cabinets and the requirement for banks of backup batteries in the cabinets themselves.
The backup generators in the exchanges are useless because they don’t connect to the last mile copper.
This is also one of the reasons the cabinets are so big and why costs blew out for fttn.
Malcolm is a genius isn’t he.

Thanks Tom. Meaning the power supply to generate the light is in the exchange?

The light is transmitted from the exchange (or re-transmitted at a way point such as a tower etc). As the fibre does not carry power as copper does, there needs to be another source of power for the copper after the fibre ends.

    Tom.

  16. I mentioned they showed Frontline series 1 episode 1 on ABC Comedy tonight. There were two things pertinent to current politics.

Brian telling Mike off after Mike editorialised on Greece and Macedonia: “The only TV commentator arrogant enough to speak his own mind was Darryn Hinch and what’s he doing now, flogging denture cream on the Midday Show”.

But here’s the comedy gold in the episode. In Elliot Rhode’s end of week song he has the following line:
“Malcolm Turnbull he’s sure got pull, he’ll change the flag and call the queen a bag and give old England the flick, so we become an Aussie re-pub-lic”

It’s at the 24 minute mark.

The ABC seem to have removed the whole Alberici article. I can only view it via google cache.

They left the original link dead and put a censored version here http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-14/corporate-tax-australian-companies-havent-paid-in-10-years/9443840

CTar1 I believe tpg have left iinet alone operationally. Will be interesting to see how long that lasts.

Not in my experience. After being an iiNet customer for over 10 years, we have left them (for Internet purposes). TPG turned iiNet into a TPG-clone, but the decline started when Michael Malone departed … or even before.

We’ve jumped to AussieBroadband (ABB). They will not “sell” you a connection unless they have the capacity to handle additional customers – this means little, if any, slow-down at peak times. Based in Victoria’s Gippsland, they have Australian call-centre/s. More expensive than the likes of TPG, but the connections and speeds have been steady (based on 2 different houses, in 2 widely-different areas). NOTE: if your nbn line and connection type cause your line to be slow, there’s nothing ABB – or any other provider – can do about it.

Biased? Me? Yes. (Ahem, referral code available – disclosure: we get a free month.)

Additional note: if your power goes out, your modem/router will go as well, and therefore, your connection will too. Backup battery or not. Unless you have it connected to an independent UPS. (Loosely speaking.)

  19. “Jacob Zuma has resigned as President of South Africa, heeding orders by the ruling African National Congress to bring an end to his nine scandal-plagued years in power.”

If only Abbott/Turnbull and LNP has the balls

  20. I reckon that right about now, Barney has enough under his belt to decide that they can get stuffed he’s going to become an independent and stick it up em all 🙂
