Newspoll: 52-48 to Labor

Newspoll resumes with the Coalition’s best result in ten months.

As related by The Australian, the first Newspoll of the year has Labor’s two-party lead at 52-48, which is down from 53-47 at the previous poll in mid-November, and the narrowest it’s been since April last year. On the primary vote, the Coalition is up two to 38%, Labor is steady on 37% and the Greens are steady on 10%. One Nation is on 5%, which is down two on a result that was already their weakest showing since Newspoll started publishing results for them last February. Personal ratings bring good news for Malcolm Turnbull, who is up five on approval to 37%, and has widened his lead as preferred prime minister from 41-34 to 45-31. Bill Shorten is up two on approval to 34%, but it seems we will have to wait for the disapproval ratings (UPDATE: Good news for both on the latter score, with Turnbull down seven to 50%, and Shorten down four to 52%).

UPDATE: Newspoll also has preferred Labor leader numbers which have little separating Bill Shorten, Tanya Plibersek and Anthony Albanese, who are on 22%, 25% and 24% respectively.

  1. Bolt agreeing with about half Labor posters here that Barnaby’s affair is of public interest
    1. Comments against SSM saying Asian businesses would be harder to negotiate with as they would find it “decadent” which would also be true of his affair
    2. Another argument Joyce make against SSM “The best protection for those girls is that they get themselves into a secure relationship with a loving husband and I want that to happen for them.”
    3. His new partner getting a series of tax-payer funded jobs

Interestingly Bolta also wants to know why the media didn’t report on what was an open secret until yesterday.

And before I leave what my father affectionally refers to as “bullshit castle” for the day, a very big thank you to the readers, for playing along this week.

    “Green Grundle”

    lol. The double standards.

Some Laborites were ever so willing to run with Rundle’s beat-up about the ‘ruckus’ in Batman about Alex Bhathal:

So to prove you don’t have double standards, you will never ever run with something Rundle says again?

How does a parent’s marital status impact on British citizenship.? According to British law and a London QC it doesn’t. The Home Office bureaucrat erred. Their dumb view not pertinent to Susan Lamb’s “all reasonable steps.”— Paul Bongiorno (@PaulBongiorno) February 8, 2018

  6. Dont know if I heard correctly. I just heard a news break on fm radio.
I think it was the father of Barnaby Joyce partner. Said Wtte that it was a disgrace that the pregnancy was kept a secret until now.

lizzie raised the Rundle article re Labor today.

I have never had a Crikey sub so can’t read his articles.

Well I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to reserve the right to either agree or disagree with something someone wrote. I don’t see that as a double standard at all. Just wondering why you would think it a double standard.

Yep. I couldn’t quite make out the other comment but something about having the fires ready for a roasting or some such.

  9. It could be that publicizing the Joyce thing was a pre-emptive clearing of the decks when the promised series of exposures of politicians happens.
I assume that there is a bit of pressure on the ABC as we post.

  10. Father of Joyce partner.

Mr Campion said in his statement he hopes Mr Joyce ‘can find a respectable job’ and referred to the prime minister as ‘Mr Talkbull’.

    😀

Last time I looked, Bolt has a major MSM media presence. So why didn’t he?

  12. The fact that BJoyce’s partner has been estranged from her own father, probably explains a lot about her being with Mr Joyce………………….

  13. Pegasus,
Double triple standards? I just read the contribution of yourself and bakunin to the Batman thread. Dredging up Bill and Chloe Shorten’s relationship? Really? What does that contribute to the debate?

The actual ‘marital’ status doesn’t matter but that she can produce an official bit of paper that shows her father was born in the UK does.

A ‘marriage’ certificate has his name and ‘born at’ on it.

I don’t think he’s a journalist. When he’s tried to be a journalist, it’s blown up in his face. Remember Bolt saying Christensen was going to leave the LNP last year. That didn’t end well for Bolt.

  16. Thinking about Lamb there is a good chance (if she is referred) that she will be ruled ineligible and there will be a byelection.

But could she nominate? If the HC rules she is still a UK citizen, or is entitled to be one, and she hasn’t renounced, then she cannot nominate.

  17. Julia Baird had a really informative ‘The Drum’ session this evening on ABC TV – no IPA or LNP hacks but just people who know what they are talking about and can do so rationally. Very refreshing.

  18. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-08/victims-free-to-speak-to-royal-commission-as-banks-waive-rights/9410128

The Commonwealth Bank, the bank at the centre of many of the biggest scandals to hit the industry, is the last major bank to confirm that victims and former staff are free to give evidence to the financial services royal commission.

The bank has indicated current staff will also be able to volunteer evidence free from retribution.

    ::::
The ACTU launched a campaign today to ensure that the royal commission pushed banks to waive their legal rights, and has welcomed the banks’ swift responses.

“How Fake Surgery Exposes Useless Treatments
It can reveal whether popular operations are actually effective

…….. in theNew York Times: “‘Unbelievable’: Heart Stents Fail to Ease Chest Pain.”The headline reflected the results of a British study, published online last November in the Lancet, that used what is probably the best methodology for assessing a surgical procedure: sham surgery. In this case, 200 patients with a blocked artery were randomly assigned to get either a real stent operation or a fake one.

In the real version, a surgeon snaked a balloon-tipped catheter through an artery in the groin or arm up to the blockage, widened the vessel by inflating the balloon, and then kept it open with a tubelike stent made of wire mesh. In the sham procedure, a catheter was directed to the blockage, but the surgeon only pretended to do the rest.

The astonishing finding: there was no difference in how the patients felt six weeks after surgery. Both groups reported less pain, and both performed better on treadmill tests……………………… Multiple studies have shown that they do not lower the risk of heart attacks or death. The main justification has been to relieve symptoms such as chest pain,

    Yeah, a clown.

  21. I suggest also that you go over to the Batman thread and see what bakunin contributed. You will also see that Pegasus did not admonish him.
