Same-sex marriage survey: 61.6 yes, 38.4 no

And the winner is …

So there you have it. Below is a tool for exploring the results at divisional level according to a range of electoral and demographic criteria. Take your pick from the drop down menu, and you will get divisional “yes” votes recorded on the vertical axis, and their results for the relevant indicator on the vertical axis. Most of these are self-explanatory, with the exception of “One Nation support index”. This equals the division’s 2016 Senate vote for One Nation divided by the party’s overall Senate vote in that state, multiplied by 100. So an electorate will score 100 if its One Nation vote is exactly equal to the state average; it will score 200 if it’s double; 50 if it’s half; and so forth. This is to prevent the party’s across-the-board high results in Queensland from spoiling the effect. “Finished school” is measured as a percent of the 15-plus population.

Um, Jacka Randa… try proving it.

    It’s pretty easy, actually.

Gay: I’d like to arrange a wedding cake, please.
CakeBigot: Okay, what kind of cake do you want?
Gay: Chocolate. We’d need it on the 14th of next month.
CakeBigot: I’ve checked my schedule and that shouldn’t be a problem. Where do you need it delivered?
Gay: Central park, around 1:00pm should be fine.
CakeBigot: For Central park the deliver fee will be $50,
Gay: No worries, please book it in.
CakeBigot: Can do. Your total will come to $550. I’ll need to take a $100 deposit now, and the rest is payable 7 days before delivery.
    Gay: Cool, here’s your $100.
CakeBigot: Great! You’re all confirmed for the 14th.
Gay: Excellent, looking forward to it.
Gay: Oh, by the way, the person I’m marrying has the same genitals that I do.
CakeBigot: Sorry, but we’re all out of chocolate cake and there’s no way we’ll have more by next month.

The discrimination proves itself, so long as the person ordering the cake doesn’t walk in and immediately proclaim “I’M A GAY PERSON AND I NEED A GAY WEDDING CAKE FOR MY BIG GAY SAME-SEX WEDDING RECEPTION”.

If they instead order the cake like a normal human being, and everything is fine until the cake vendor somehow finds out that they’re gay, then it’s fairly obvious that illegal discrimination has occurred.

  2. Let us just enjoy the result of this opinion poll and forget the bakers.

Do not waste victory on nitpicking. \\

The next fight will be on us soon enough,

  3. The fact that applications to renounce can be refused leads me further to doubt whether the hesitators are likely to get a positive result.

  4. ltep @ #806 Thursday, November 16th, 2017 – 12:51 am

The fact that applications to renounce can be refused leads me further to doubt whether the hesitators are likely to get a positive result.

It certainly isn’t something in their favour.

Lamb’s individual situation sounds like she did not submit a completed application, as some required documents were missing.

I think it would be hard to argue that she had taken reasonable steps as submitting an incomplete application is not reasonable.

Documents are discoverable, it may take a bit more time but it is possible.

From my own personal experience I’ve applied for a UK ancestry visa.

To qualify I had to demonstrate my heritage, this involved providing the birth certificates of my maternal grandfather, mother and myself.

My maternal grandfather and grandmother were dead and no one in the family had his birth certificate, but I was able to easily apply to the registrar in the UK for a copy of it.

Her “application” was received the day before the close of nominations.

In the ABC article it mentions that father is dead and she is estranged from her mother, but these shouldn’t present a barrier from accessing the required documents.

It seems the barrier was the fast approaching close of nominations.

There is no mention of when she was pre-selected.

It does not look good for her.

  5. Correction to my 1:43 below:

Her “application” was received the day before the close of nominations.

    Should read;

Her “application” was received the day before she nominated, three days before the close of nominations.

Also the article doesn’t mention whether she has been able to renounce her citizenship since the election.

The problem is not the cake shop owner; the problem is the right wings nutters that won’t accept they lost. Real life trolling, don’t engage or aaaaark off is the right response.

    I don’t think it’s a dummy spit.

This is mainly about the RWNJs’ conviction that it is a Right to be able to arbitrarily discriminate against someone because of certain arbitrary beliefs.

The political battle for progressives has been and is about equality and preserving anti-discrimination laws,

while for conservatives it has been and is about winding back anti-discrimination laws.

  8. Roy Moore Is Fading Fast As He Has Lost Nearly Half Of His Support In New Poll

A new poll shows Republican Roy Moore leading the Alabama Senate race, but he has lost nearly half of his support and has seen his lead shrink to six points over Democrat Doug Jones.

The Fox 10/Strategy Research poll has Moore leading Jones 49%-43% with 8% undecided. Moore lost 8% of his Republican support while Jones gained 3%.

The undecided voters hold the key to victory.
According to Fox 10, here is what they are thinking:

    – 6% said the allegations made them MORE likely to vote for Roy Moore.
    – 44% said the allegations made them LESS likely to vote for Roy Moore.
    – 51% said they were undecided or that the allegations made no difference in their vote.

  9. Toddler Trump Tantrums Because He Was Forced To Watch CNN On Asia Trip

Trump just returned from a 12 day trip to Asia, and he immediately complained because he had to watch CNN instead of Fox News.

    Trump tweeted:

    Donald J. Trump ‎@realDonaldTrump

While in the Philippines I was forced to watch @CNN, which I have not done in months, and again realized how bad, and FAKE, it is. Loser!

.@foxandfriends will be showing much of our successful trip to Asia, and the friendships & benefits that will endure for years to come!

The President is a toddler. CNN didn’t lavish praise him and boost his ego like Fox News does, so the whole trip was ruined for Trump.

America doesn’t have a president. They have an angry granddad whose day is ruined when he can’t find the TV remote in between the couch cushions. The only thing more humiliating than Trump being president is the President whining because he can’t watch Fox News while traveling.

  10. Russia Dossier Haunts Trump As Christopher Steele Says It Is 70%-90% Accurate

The Guardian reported, “Christopher Steele, the former British intelligence officer who compiled an explosive dossier of allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, believes it to 70% to 90% accurate, according to a new book on the covert Russian intervention in the 2016 US election. The book, Collusion: How Russia Helped Donald Trump Win, by Guardian journalist Luke Harding, quotes Steele as telling friends that he believes his reports – based on sources cultivated over three decades of intelligence work – will be vindicated as the US special counsel investigation digs deeper into contacts between Trump, his associates and Moscow.”

The political battle for progressives has been and is about equality and preserving anti-discrimination laws

For me, it has always been more about equality and less about marriage. PB has already discussed at length the changing nature of marriage over the centuries.

Of course someone like Shelton is now reaching for a reason to remain relevant. The silly implication that children will be taught that they must marry someone of the same sex is so ridiculous that no doubt Shelton and his friends will continue to spruik it.

  12. Trump won’t pull his Roy Moore endorsement until he hears Sean Hannity’s final judgement: report

Roy Moore’s Senate candidacy may end up resting in the hands of Fox News host Sean Hannity.

White House sources tell CNN that President Donald Trump is waiting to see how conservative opinion on Moore develops in the coming days before he decides whether to pull his support for Moore’s candidacy.

“Behind the scenes, the President and his advisers are closely watching the developments in Alabama’s special election, two sources close to the White House and a White House official said,” CNN reports. “That includes, in particular, the reaction of influential conservative supporters such as Fox News host Sean Hannity.”

Hannity on Tuesday night gave Moore 24 hours to clear up charges that he had molested multiple teenage girls when he was in his 30s. Hannity said that if Moore didn’t satisfactorily explain himself, then the Fox host would withdraw his support for his candidacy.

  13. MSNBC panel shreds Jeff Sessions’ suspiciously bad memory: ‘Beauregard must be southern for I can’t recall’

An MSNBC panel hosted by Stephanie Ruhle called out Attorney General Jeff Beauregard Sessions III for allegedly forgetting that he had conversations with Russians and with Trump campaign officials who were trying to coordinate with Russians.

“There’s a lot of things he can’t recall,” MSNBC terrorism analyst Malcolm Nance explained. “That’s almost his middle name now when he gives testimony.”

“Nope,” Ruhle interrupted. “His middle name is Beauregard. Don’t ever forget it.”

“That’s got to be southern for ‘I can’t remember,’” Nance laughed. “For the most part, every time he comes up here, he makes these denials. There’s some piece of data comes out and we patently catch him in this.”

“How does he not remember the meeting but once his memory is refreshed he remembers all the details of this meeting?” Nance added. “But still he says, ‘Everything I said was true.’ I don’t know whether he actually knows that he’s falling into a perjury trap here.”

In the ABC article it mentions that father is dead and she is estranged from her mother, but these shouldn’t present a barrier from accessing the required documents.

The article says that Lamb’s mother wouldn’t sign the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registry form to get a copy of her parents marriage certificate. To meet the normal requirements she would need this.

The Registrars generally have discretion on waiving some of the requirements. Some requirements will be a matter of state legislation while others will have come out of Privacy Law and the like.

I wonder what she did then? That she doesn’t have a copy of the certificate is not the fault of the ‘foreign power’. Unless she contacted the relevant state registry and put her case to them at least I’d conclude she hadn’t tried very hard (‘reasonable steps’).

  15. Such a pity Tony was unable to tolerate the disciplines of the priesthood. He would have caused less harm there.

The “no” conservatives will not surrender, of course. Tony Abbott is already manoeuvring to make himself their champion. He’s less interested in the 75 per cent “yes” vote in his electorate of Warringah than in the 4.8 million people who voted no.

He sees these as the core of the religious and traditionalist movement he will now seek to lead, the reaction against the revolution, all the way to his second coming.

  16. All this talk about suing a cake maker who won’t supply a gay wedding cake reminds me of an incident 20 years ago.

2 months before Ralph had paid a deposit to get a new fly screen door. The tradesman rang up to say he couldn’t complete the work and he returned the deposit. The office hot head was all for taking tradesman to VCAT but as the deposit had been returned VCAT would say “no case”

  17. I’ll admit that overall I am enjoying this citizenship shemozzle, just for the sheer shock horror value of it together with the expectation that there is plenty more to come. Hoping that the HC mostly lean towards sensible and broadly accessible in their new rulings. Main good thing of all this is candidates will face much clearer rules going forward.

I’m hoping that we find the disqualification of Hollie whatsername was due to technicality of date of resigning her AAT position (one day late) rather than having taken it in the first place. Big precedent set for public service candidates otherwise despite what some may suggest re: her process of receiving said job. What if she was a nurse…

If the black letter interpretations continue we are heading into hung parliament territory. Much as I am enjoying seeing the pathetic excuse for a government cop what they deserve, we do seriously need good and stable leadership, governance and policy making. The lack of it is doing much harm.

  18. I’m all for sticking it to the bastards who want to bastardize some more by refusing to buckle to cake shop owners who want to be creeps.

Let THEM take the chance that they will be pilloried if they choose to discriminate illegally.

    Boot meet other foot.

  19. Of course someone like Shelton is now reaching for a reason to remain relevant. The silly implication that children will be taught that they must marry someone of the same sex is so ridiculous that no doubt Shelton and his friends will continue to spruik it.

Because it seems that the Fundies like Shelton will never understand that you marry, voluntarily, the one you love.

Traditionally not necessarily, that’s an indication of how far in the past these people are and the lack of relevance they hold in today’s Society.

  21. Trump silent on Roy Moore because of the sexual abuse allegations against him: White House source

CNN reported on Wednesday that President Donald Trump was reluctant to address the sexual abuse scandal surrounding Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore.

The network said sources close to the White House claimed that Trump was hesitant because of accusations that he himself had sexually assaulted a number of women.

“He believes that some of his accusers were not exactly honest here and he is giving Roy Moore the benefit of the doubt,” CNN’s Jeff Zeleny explained.

“In some of the cases, not all of the cases,” he continued. “I’m told that is one of the reasons he does not want to weigh in here.”

  22. Democrat Doug Jones Leads By 12 In Alabama Senate Race According To An Internal GOP Poll

A poll by the National Republican Senatorial Committee shows Democrat Doug Jones now leading Roy Moore by 12 points in the Alabama Senate election.

Politico reported, “Republican Roy Moore is trailing Democrat Doug Jones by 12 points in the Alabama special Senate election, according to a poll conducted by the National Republican Senatorial Committee after five women accused Moore of pursuing them as teenagers. Jones led Moore 51 to 39 percent….The poll shows a dramatic turn against Moore in Alabama: In early October, a committee poll had him leading by 16 points, and a survey early this month had him up by 9 points. Moore’s favorability numbers also tanked, from 49 percent in early October to 35 percent in the NRSC’s latest poll.”

  23. All these religious types who apparently would prefer people to ‘live in sin’ rather than ‘regularise’ their union..

Had a run in with a family member on this kind of thinking decades ago – she disowned her daughter who was ‘living in sin’ with her long time boyfriend whilst taking in the other daughter who was pregnant but didn’t know who the father was.

The latter was apparently OK because she just kept getting carried away by her hormones and therefore she never intentionally slept with anyone, but the first was an out and out slut because she was sleeping with the same guy deliberately.

Sometimes I don’t get religious types at all, which is probably the reason I’m no longer one..

  24. Trump’s Tax Cut Scam Is Crashing And Burning Right Before Our Very Eyes

Polling shows that Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy are being soundly rejected who see through the plan as nothing more than a scam to give rich people more money.

The Quinnipiac Poll shows that the tax cuts are disapproved by every age group and demographic

The numbers are brutal. There is no support outside of the Republican Party for this plan. No one is being fooled by their promise of a tax cut for the middle-class.

The Republican tax plan is facing the same fate as their Obamacare repeal. The Republican Party is completely out of step with the majority of the country. Voters see through the lies. They understand that Trump, Ryan, and McConnell have shown no interest in their economic well being in the past, and they aren’t about to start to do so now. Whoever came up with the idea of selling the tax cut for the rich as a middle-class plan should be fired.

Republicans have set themselves up for a massive defeat. The tax cuts for the rich scam is crashing and burning, but it will be up to the American people to put the final nail in the coffin of another terrible Republican idea.

Maybe doG isn’t all seeing and all knowing!

First daughter’s unchanging situation would be like to attract notice due to it’s long term consistent nature whilst the second daughter’s fleeting dalliances are likely to fly under the radar. 🙂

  33. William if you see this you wrote
“Take your pick from the drop down menu, and you will get divisional “yes” votes recorded on the vertical axis, and their results for the relevant indicator on the vertical axis.” Should the second “vertical” actually be “horizontal”?

  34. Pyne now claiming to have been hacked.” I was hacked overnight! I was at 2am. Someone tried to hack my social media yesterday. Maybe they are making mischief over the plebiscite?”

  35. ‘The most controversial aspect of his bill was the most difficult and least important. He proposed an exemption for anyone who conscientiously objected to gay marriage from having to sell services specifically for a gay wedding. In reality, this would have resulted in almost no discrimination because most merchants want people’s business and are not worried about a person’s private life.’

Um, Sheridan, this is seriously whacky thinking — let’s do a little word changing ..

“He proposed an exemption for anyone who conscientiously objected to gays from being locked up for murdering gay people. In reality, this would have resulted in almost no murders of gay people because most people aren’t murderers…”

  36. ..of course, the other point is that no one is forced to be either a florist or a baker. If entering a profession is going to put you at odds with your customers on a regular basis, don’t enter the profession. I doubt there are many vegetarians working as butchers…

So @TurnbullMalcolm can’t even bring himself to front one of the many YES community events happening around Australia tonight

Not even in his own electorate

  38. A lot of people who voted yes and are hearing Turnbull talking about passing a bill “by Christmas” will be going WTF. They thought this was over.

  39. Personally I would of liked to have seen Turnbull recall Parliament for a day to pass Dean Smith’s bill. If you can waste $122M on a “survey”, you would think he would have no hesitation in spending a few more to finish the No side off for good. No amendments,no fucking around, just pass it.

  40. Sonar

Im not sure Turnbull wants to recall the house given his non existant majority now. Lab + Crossbench would move banking royal commission.

  41. Im not a big fan of the RC into banking to be honest. Im not sure much will come from it.

Id rather Labor forms a new government and sets up a new state owned bank for savings and mortgages. Force some competition into the sector and imprve standards that way.

  42. “Katharine Murphy thinks this might be an opportunity for Turnbull to regain some ground”
Katharine Murphy has dedicated her journalistic career to promoting and apologizing for Malcolm. One frame of a First Dog totally destroys Katharine’s efforts.
