Newspoll: 54-46 to Labor

Malcolm Turnbull’s personal ratings deteriorate still further amid an otherwise stable result from Newspoll.

Newspoll retains its comatose form in its latest fortnightly result, with Labor steady on 37%, the Coalition down a point to 35%, the Greens steady on 10% and One Nation steady on 9%, and Labor’s two-party lead unchanged on 54-46. Malcolm Turnbull’s personal ratings have worsened, down one on approval to 31% and up three on disapproval to 59%, while Bill Shorten is respectively down one to 32% and up one to 56%, with Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister at 41-33. 1. Imacca – I’m assuming that the police will want Cash to give evidence against her staffer. After all, according to her, he confessed to leaking confidential information. That confession would be admissible in a court of law. I’m assuming of course that a law was broken (haven’t looked into that). But if it was, she is in all sorts of bother.”

Given the form of the AFP I’m expecting they will keep “investigating” for as long as the government needs the excuse of the investigation to avoid questions, and then nothing will happen.

  3. Imagine the scene.

The golden carriage drawn by 6 jet black horses in rich caparison halts in Hyde Park and the town crier bellows :-

Draw near and worship His Supreme Excellency Le Duc de Wentworth.

    Trigger fireworks and dancing girls.

    Need I go on ❓

Who would not vote for such a radiant creature ❓

Town crier announce the soon to be changes to the constitution bestowing lifetime leadership to His Right Royal Honourableness. Le Duc basks in the radiance of his own reflection from the clouds of glory surrounding him.

Back to earth. Time for my afternoon nap attack.

Sure, it might only be a 10% chance that Barnaby will get drunk, do something stupid and throw government away. It might only be a 1% chance. But it’s a chance Labor cannot pass up.

But with that beetroot head and slurred speech of his – would anyone know if he was drunk or sober ??????

  5. russellmahoney: By my possibly flawed count I think Shorten has now won more Newspolls as Opposition Leader than Abbott did, but in fewer overall polls.

I’m not sure what his point is. I’m sure the L-NP will have many more bad polls before they are booted. Ipsos and Morgan hardly bother these days, and Reachtel is quiet too.

  7. The Independent’s Patrick Cockburn some what optimistic about Iraq now –

Iraq may be coming to the end of 40 years of war as the government wins two big victories

They must not overplay their hand, making sure that all communities in Iraq get a reasonable cut of the national cake in terms of power, money and jobs

Not only looking after the minorities but also as long as the Septic’s don’t cause Iraq to become a battlefield again by pushing to hard against Iran.

  8. Excuse my laziness for just asking rather than checking somehow in the archives but was Abbott in opposition ever preferred PM in polling prior to the 2013 election?

  9. What was the point of this? Did anyone question her?

Reading that story one might be forgiven for not noticing that the past 16 years of war were started by the West. As you imply, important elements in the Trump Administration are gung ho for a war with Iran.

  12. Dangerous Dan Tehan speaking profoundly from Israel:

Mr Tehan said a review could be needed in the wake of the High Court decision.

“Maybe there needs to be a committee set up to look at it and see ‘OK, what can we do from here’. The High Court ruled on Friday and we will have more to say in the coming days,” Mr Tehan said.

“My view is you will see a new committee formed or the Government have a serious look at what the implications are.”

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-10-29/malcolm-turnbull-trip-delay-not-embarrassing-dan-tehan-says/9096932

So Turnbull was stuck in Australia agonising over the need for a committee …

Tehan generally looks like he’s just eaten a bucket load of speed as preparation to speak to the Press or even to just stand behind some other Lib speaking to the Press and him nodding sagely … but this ‘committee’ forming is obviously of mind-bending importance.

He looked positively charged with the importance of conveying this ‘news’ to an international audience and convincing them that, never fear, Turnbull will be here.

ozpsych: @SkyNewsAust @JulieBishopMP JBish”We’re the most powerful political momentum in Aust history”

I found the context and it’s meant to be some kind of polly-waffle about how united the coalition are. I’m stuck at thinking momentum is something you have, not something you are. Here is the meaningless quote.

“We’re the most powerful political momentum in Australian history and so we’re stronger together and that’s why we’re working closely as a Coalition,” Ms Bishop said.

  14. Question

Thank you. (I’ve been asleep.) Sorry to bother you about something that turned out to be so ineffably obscure, but I like your proposed election slogan. As meaningless as JBish herself. Far more important, no doubt, is what to wear to the Melbourne Cup. 😆

Good name for a horse too 🙂

I’ve been a long term reader of Cockburn. His connections are wide across the M-E.

I rate him as good observer but sometimes his conclusions are dodgy.

But in view of the crumpling of the Kurds in the last 3 weeks (and Barzani saying he won’t be ‘back’) I’d say Cockburn’s on solid ground with this but a lot of things have to go right.

  17. It may have the Turnbull and Palaszczuk governments firmly in its corner, but the Adani super-mine is facing a formidable new opponent: the Christian faith.

The Catholic and Anglican bishops of Townsville have issued a joint statement to their followers criticising “projected mega-mining developments across Queensland, especially the Galilee Basin”, and accusing politicians and big business of failing to protect the common good.

“We’re the most powerful political momentum in Australian history and so we’re stronger together and that’s why we’re working closely as a Coalition,” Ms Bishop said.

This is a message to ON supporters and to ON operators. The Lib flirtation with ON, such a disaster in WA, won’t be repeated in Queensland or Federally. The Liberals understand that without the Nationals they are cactus.

  19. CTar1

I too was v surprised at how up beat he was about the future. History suggests pessimism is a safe bet. Iran’s increased influence in Syria and Iraq is bound to get the war loons in Tel Aviv and Washington going all out to prove optimists wrong. But with Russia “back in down” over there maybe it will not work out as they wish.

  20. Briefly, yes bad grammar makes sense when talking to PHON voters, but why not use a word like “alliance” so it makes sense to the rest of us?

As far as silly slogans go, I have to admit it amuses me.

    “We are MOMENTUM!”

    “Word!”

  21. gt

It’s a surprising intervention by the two bishops.

A warning to governments that if they interfere with them running their ‘flocks’ well then the churches will feel free to make their opinions known on all types of political concerns?

  22. Eddy Jokovich‏ @EddyJokovich · 2h2 hours ago

Because he was lazy and can’t fill out paperwork correctly, Barnaby Joyce wants a referendum to change Section 44 of the Constitution. Another $122 million for that? #AUSPOL

Don’t tell Brandis the churches are getting political. He’ll take away their tax free status!

    ‘We are MOMENTUM’

That has run out of energy and stalled.]

The problem is they’re not going anywhere.

    Zero velocity means zero momentum.

  25. poroti @ #343 Monday, October 30th, 2017 – 3:06 pm

The Coalition is missing their KPI. It is after lunch and still no crisis/disaster/blunder.

Too busy infighting to hit their targets.

In comments that may further inflame the intra-Coalition tensions, Mr Joyce argued that the Nationals were responsible for last year’s election victory because they held all their seats and won an extra one while the Liberals went backwards.

  26. Look, I’m a big Gillard fan, but there’s no point re-writing history about her ETS.

The first chance she was given, literally on the night the policy was announced, Julia Gillard gave the media and the Opposition permission to call it a “Carbon Tax” by agreeing with the term herself on 7.30.

She obviously thought she’d tackle the “Carbon Tax” form of words head-on, to get it out of the way right at the start. She wanted to defuse it. But instead it blew up in her face and the term stuck. Her opponents probably couldn’t believe their luck.

She was and is a great lady, but sometimes she was so politically tin-eared you could hear her rattling from half a mile away.

By all means argue that it wasn’t really a tax, but don’t fool yourselves that Gillard didn’t give her enemies – inside the party and outside – a bigger head start than the hare gave the tortise (and whatever else his failings, Abbott was no turtle).
