Detailed polling on same-sex marriage and republicanism, plus state electoral developments in New South Wales and South Australia.

I had a paywalled article on the same-sex marriage issue in Crikey yesterday, which focused on the ways in which the proposed postal survey might skew the result to “no”. To that end, I obtained figures from Essential Research breaking down recent polling on the subject by age and gender, results of which are displayed below. This is based on 3061 responses obtained in June and July.

Further polling:

• The Seven Network reported yesterday that a poll of 700 respondents in Tony Abbott’s electorate of Warringah, which I presume was conducted by ReachTEL, found 69.7% in favour of same-sex marriage and 25.7% opposed.

• The Australian published further numbers from this week’s Newspoll on attitudes towards a republic, finding 51% in favour (steady since the last such exercise in January 2016) and 38% against (up one). Those number become 55% and 34% in the event that Prince Charles becomes king. As The Australian’s report notes, it’s actually the middle-aged cohort of 35 to 49 year olds that has the strongest net positive result, with the younger cohort on 45% and 37% and the older on 54% and 40%.

State matters:

• South Australia’s parliament has settled on a new electoral system for its Legislative Council that will abolish group voting tickets, leaving the Victorian and Western Australian upper houses as the last hold-outs. The new system will resemble that for New South Wales in that voters will be able to number as few or as many boxes above the line as they like. Below-the-line voters will be directed to number at least 12 boxes, but a vote will be formal with as few as six. This compares with a minimum of 15 preferences for below-the-line voters in New South Wales. The Liberals had sought to introduce a Senate-style model in which above-the-line voters were to be directed to number six boxes, but with any number being sufficient for a formal vote. However, Labor’s model eventually prevailed in the upper house.

• Two state by-elections loom in New South Wales, with dates yet to be determined. Nationals MP Katrina Hodgkinson is retiring after a parliamentary career going back to 1999, creating a vacancy in the rural seat of Cootamundra. While Labor is not competitive in this seat, the last by-election in a Nationals held seat, in Orange in November last year, was won by Shooters Fishers and Farmers. In the western Sydney seat of Blacktown, former Labor leader John Robertson is retiring, and in this case there seems little reason to doubt that Labor will be seriously challenged. Stephen Bali, the local mayor and a former organiser with the Right faction Australian Workers Union, would appear to be the front-runner for preselection. Antony Green has guides up for both: Blacktown and Cootamundra.

  1. Adrian:

In today’s Crikey, this on Oz media’s coverage of the white supremacist terror attack in Virginia:

In an article yesterday, and this morning, abc.net.au did not use the term “terrorism” except to quote Cruz and Rubio’s tweets. SBS ran AAP copy but didn’t use the word “terror” despite the article confirming Fields’ extremist links. The Australian ran AP copy and wouldn’t use the t-word. News.com.au copied the ABC and only used “terror” in quoting tweets. Instead, Fields was described as “accused killer”, “alleged driver” and “a 20-year-old man”. Compare and contrast ABC coverage of the London Bridge and Westminster Bridge attacks earlier this year, which were immediately described as terror attacks; ditto news.com.au coverage.

  2. Talking about Deja Vu:
Brandis told Parliament that he had advice from the Solicitor General (Gleeson) that the citizenship laws were OK and Gleeson felt impelled to tell Dreyfus that was horseshit. He never gave that advice.
Now Brandis pulls out another piece of “advice” from a Solicitor General saying that Barnyard is hunky-dory.
    What a lying tool.

  3. “I was kind of hoping Barnaby was a citizen of a non-English speaking country which would at least explain why I can never understand him”

Did you notice that his father was James Joyce? It all started to fall into place for me. 😉

  4. Meanwhile…

“On August 1, one day after the abrupt exit of White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, President Trump dined with a communications whiz: Rupert Murdoch.
The two men had a private dinner at the White House, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the meeting.

Murdoch is the patriarch of 21st Century Fox (FOX), one of the world’s most powerful media companies, and News Corp, the owner of newspapers like the Wall Street Journal. He doubles as the CEO of Fox News.

So any interaction between the two men is intriguing, especially because the Journal’s editorial board has become increasingly critical of the president.
A White House spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment about the dinner. A Murdoch spokeswoman declined to comment.”

  5. Zoom, I don’t understand why you think “resignation” means or changes anything. You can resign and then apply for the vacancy. Political leaders do it all the time.

  6. Bemused @8:14PM: No paywall on that so have your say.

    Vote early, vote often.

If Barnaby had to resign, the Government numbers in the House would be 75/149, so they would still have a majority with the Speaker’s casting vote. Now if they lost Matt Canavan, the numbers would be 74/148, which would make things ‘interesting’. Bring it on.

Will we see headlines “Government in Chaos” in tomorrow’s Telecrap?

  7. BevanShields: Picture this scenario: Deputy PM Gillard announces she is UK citizen. PM Rudd keeps her in cabinet. Imagine the Liberal opposition reaction.

  8. albericie: Senator George Brandis tells me tonight that, contrary to news reports, the PM has issued no directive about ministers campaigning for #SSM

  9. Waters has already renounced and publicly announced her intention to nominate for pre-selection as a Senate candidate.

  10. Its Time,

I just cheked my details on AEC website and there is no detail of age/DOB or gender. Why do you think this information is required in this surveyet thing?

Because the ABS says they will issue statistics on the survey broken down by electorate, age group and gender.

That information has to come from somewhere.

  11. Picture this scenario: Deputy PM Gillard announces she is UK citizen. PM Rudd keeps her in cabinet. Imagine the Liberal opposition reaction.

Yeah but this level of hypocrisy applies to everything the Libs do. From extending the debt ceiling to breaking their pre election promises, to Abbott’s shafting the taxpayer as he does his charity rides. to just about everything in between.

Do as I say not as I do should be their motto.

  12. For those of us who are political junkies, so far 4C has gone over old coals so to speak. Bob Brown never wanted the NSW Greens affiliated with the binding committee not removed.

  13. smurray38: Never tweet

Never hold “comedy” debates at your party meetings

Never let #4Corners film your “comedy” debates

  14. StephenJonesMP: It’s so unfair you have to chose

markhumphries: “I’m a politician, not a theatre critic”. I’ll remember that phrase.
    #4Corners

  15. JoshButler: Coalition: Joyce’s citizenship drama

Greens: ALL THE DIRTY LAUNDRY on #4corners

Labor: sitting quietly whispering “don’t screw this up…”

  16. Ides:

It’s apparent that the Greens have a huge problem with Rhiannon and the NSW branch of their party. While she’s there in the Senate these issues will continue to plague the Greens. I’ve been saying for a while now that she needs to go, and the NSW branch needs to reform.

  17. Leroy_Lynch: Some Green MPs didn’t go on 4 Corners. Smart move. Remember when people criticised Bill for not going on The Killing Season? He was right.

One of my all time fave blog posts by ‘Jack the Insider’ was about how “an hour with Kevin Andrews” being “the longest two weeks of my life”

  19. “murpharoo: One of the lovely ironies about the Joyce case: red meat conservatives pray for judicial activism theguardian.com/australia-news… #auspol”

There is no irony. Red meat conservatives are hypocrites. They do not mind “Judicial activism” if it favours them. “Judicial activism!” is merely the squeal they make every time they lose a court case and throw their toys out of the cot.

As Fleetwood Mac sang 🙂 Loved this album.

    Fleetwood Mac – Rhiannon

Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night
And wouldn’t you love to love her?
Takes to the sky like a bird in flight
And who will be her lover?
All your life you’ve never seen a woman taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised to you heaven?
    Will you ever win?

  21. Mr Keane is nailing Shelton again

BernardKeane: So you’re unabashed about this @LyleShelton – ADF is a hate group & supports criminalisation of homosexuality – and you endorse them

Well your barcode on the survey form could be just a unique random number and appended to that number is an encrypted form of the age/gender/electorate information. That barcode would then not require any lookup database. It would be self contained.

Yes but that would, by definition, not be a hash. It’s a random UUID concatenated with some encrypted data.

Which is fine, but not a hash. And heaven help them if anyone actually gets ahold of their encryption key.

Well Kevin Andrews just signed the “I am a complete fucking idiot” register..

    https://twitter.com/SkyNewsAust/status/896885653320810496]

I’m sure he’s been on it for quite awhile, but equating a loving committed relationship with a relationship with people who you share a mutual interest.

This man can not accept that the love he supposedly shares with his wife is the same as that shared between any two committed people.

It really is sad to hear such people talk.

Do they really think they are making a rational argument?
