Newspoll: 52-48 to Labor

The latest result from Newspoll lands slightly at the upper end of the government’s recent form.

Courtesy of The Australian, the latest result from Newspoll records Labor with a two-party lead of 52-48, down from 53-47 in the last poll (which was three weeks ago rather than the usual two, owing to Easter). Labor and the Greens are both down a point on the primary vote, to 35% and 9%, with the Coalition and One Nation steady on 36% and 10%. Malcolm Turnbull is up two on approval to 32% and down two on disapproval to 57%, while Bill Shorten is up one to 33% and down one to 53%. Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister shifts from 41-32 to 42-33.

  1. The waxworm, commonly found living in bee hives or harvested as fishing bait, proved it could eat its way through polyethylene, which is notoriously hard to break down, more than 1400 times faster than other organisms.

Scientists believe the worm has enzymes in its saliva or gut that attack plastic’s chemical bonds, in the same way they digest the wax found in hives.

The waxworm’s potential was discovered when Federica Bertocchini, a biologist and amateur beekeeper, cleaned out her hives and temporarily placed the parasites in a plastic bag.

  2. You know these ‘Surprise Visits’ by PMs to Afghanistan and Iraq are becoming way too predictable.

Looks like Turnbull has had the image consultants in too. Probably told him wearing black is what Silver Foxes do. 😉

  3. If you don’t have time to read this today, bookmark it. This details the whole NBN fiasco. Australia has been cheated by Malcolm and Tony.

By the time the next election comes around, the NBN will be 75% built and the remaining 25% will be under design or construction. Labor now is in an invidious position, with an ever-sharper critique of the government’s NBN, but no real ability to propose an alternative.

    The NBN, simply, is cooked.

On #ANZAC Day, we remember the Australians & NZers who died fighting fascism. Today would be a good day for Dutton to resign. #auspol
I recently read “1914: the year the world ended” by Australian historian Paul Ham.
I do not think that the above statement about ANZAC day is correct. Well worth finding the Ham book and reading it. It is a far more complex and nuanced story than I had previously understood WW1 and it’s antecedents. Far more horrifying.
The other book that blew me away and told the story of what took place in Turkey generally and Gallipoli particularly was “Lawerence in Arabia” by Scott Anderson, that book explains much of the modern world and how it came into being. Both come with the highest of recommendations, please let me know what you think once you have read them.

I just bought both on Kindle, cost me just over $20 for both.

The Mayor of French town of #Annezin, that voted for Le Pen, says he may resign because “I don’t want to devote my life to assholes.”
    http://theweek.com/speedreads/694368/french-mayor-hilariously-honest-about-why-might-resign-after-town-voted-marine-le-pen

    I like his honesty.

I think the “may” will quickly change to “will” now the comment is out.
It’s hard to see him getting re-elected after this. 🙂

Google “Donald Trump Alzheimer’s” for a wealth of information.
The one I remember is from October 2015!
    http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/265291/donald-trump-dementia/

    ************************************************

The last few sentences says it all :

It would be extraordinarily easy for Trump to disprove that he’s suffering from dementia. All he has to do is take a MMSE/Folstein Test and release the long form results. Because if Trump can prove he’s not suffering from a degenerative neurological disorder that has left him with a damaged mind devoid of all shame or self-awareness, he might just be an asshole.

  7. It can’t be put more concisely than this:

On Wednesday, President Trump will announce his plan to overhaul the tax code, including a proposal to cut the corporate tax rate to 15 percent from 35 percent, White House officials told The Washington Post on Monday.

Independent analysts have estimated a cut this severe could cost the federal government $2.4 trillion over 10 years, and it’s a deeper cut than one House Republicans have proposed. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Monday that such a tax plan “will pay for itself with economic growth,” but Edward Kleinbard, the former chief of staff for Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation, told The Post that if Trump’s administration is “going to rely on the principle that tax cuts can pay for themselves, history has demonstrated that tax policies move the growth needle a bit but no more than that.”

Just remember this the next time one of the Coalition’s proponents for more Company Tax Cuts states, hand on heart, that it will ‘grow the pie’ or increase economic growth. As it has been shown by Treasury and other economic models, that growth will occur, so they are kind of telling the truth, but the growth will be miniscule.

The hit to Revenue, on the other hand, and the cut-back in Services that has to occur as a result, will be hugely felt.

  8. Grimace and Lizzie,
These are not war books, while there are sections of the books that describe the battles, only much later in 1914, these books are much more about the issues that concern people on this site: the personalities, the politics, relationships, and motivations. I found both books completely engrossing and so have all the people that I referred to these books.
I consider myself somewhat informed about issues, and thought that I was fairly well informed on the subjects of these books, but I found that my world view was significantly altered by them.
I have followed up by reading other sources to verify what I read and am happy that I did so, these authors do not bullshit.

  9. Russians who hacked Clinton campaign also targeted French candidate Macron

WASHINGTON — Hackers linked to the same Russian military unit that hacked Democratic computers in the United States during last year’s election also have sought to penetrate the networks of a leading candidate in France’s presidential elections, a leading cybersecurity firm says.

Researchers from Trend Micro, a global security software company, said Monday that Russian hackers took aim last month at the networks of Emmanuel Macron, a centrist who advocates a strong pan-European stance to combat meddling by Moscow.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin openly favors Macron’s opponent, Marine Le Pen, a far-right candidate who has faced allegations that her campaign received Russian financing. Le Pen and Putin share antipathy toward the European Union.

  10. C@t:

It’s classic trickle down economics that has been proven to fail time and time again. All it does is reduce govt revenue meaning the govt has less money to spend on other things.

That Republicans and the Libs for that matter, still cling to this unproven theory is simply to give their big end of town mates a free ride at taxpayer expense.

  11. Dovey as it happens I have just read Paul Hams ‘1913’ (yes I give him full marks for imaginative book titles!). Very good read for the same reasons you noted above. Been looking around for ‘1914’ as I knew it was available and should be a good read too. Perhaps, get for the kindle, but it is rather cluttered for the moment and anyway I prefer the dead tree variety as is easier on the eyes.

Robert Fisk’s article today was about the Armenian genocide .

Will Donald Trump have the guts to call the Armenian genocide what it was?
There were thousands of eyewitness testimonies to these atrocities, including the burning of babies by Turkish gendarmes. And Trump, as we all know, cares very much about ‘beautiful babies’

  14. Trump (i.e. Republicans) & the LNP here may perfectly well know and understand fully that trickle down does not work to improve an economy; but i suspect they do believe it assists their cause to shrink the role of government. If you leave the budget with little revenue then you can argue that the only solution is to cut services – and that is the game plan.

It looks suspiciously like one of them thar “Russian Fancy Bears”. Can’t be too careful these days, Vlad is everywhere 🙂

  16. Booleanbach,
You are absolutely correct to observe that the Extreme Capitalists and their pet political parties have hit upon the correct form of words to convince the gullible that what they want, ie the destruction of the Welfare State and the government architecture which supports it, is actually a tax cut that benefits people. What they leave out is the vital connection, the essential link in the chain, that connects the Revenue that governments raise by a broad-based progressive tax system, to the services the people, the taxpayers, expect and love. You can’t have one without the other.

A ha ! The plot thickens. Trying to post the warning caused my post to disappear into the ether. Definitely Russkiys at work.. Do svidaniya Tovarisch !
