Liberal leadership spill: act two

Tony Abbott fights for his political life for the second time this year, as Malcolm Turnbull makes his move.

Malcolm Turnbull, with Julie Bishop in tow, has reportedly met with the Prime Minister to request a leadership ballot. With only the weekly Essential Research looming in the way of federal opinion polling this week, that seems as good an excuse as any to launch a new thread.

UPDATE (Two minutes later): Malcolm Turnbull has resigned from cabinet.

UPDATE 2 (10pm): Turnbull 54, Abbott 44.

  1. Kennett not happy

“@jeff_kennett: Malcolm Turnbull, You self centered, selfish individual. It has always been about you. Zoe Kerry Packer, and your performance for the 1/2”

Law enforcement must be done on the basis of protecting the victim and must be gender neutral or else it does let those who do not fit the preconceived stereotype fall through the cracks.

guytaur, just quickly before we get swept away in leadersh*t fun, what you write about was a good point. And you’re right, Labor is doing well on domestic violence.

  4. “@jeff_kennett: 2/2 few years. You and K Rudd have so much in common.. Pity you did not have the discipline that is represented by Andrew Hastie. You 3/3”

  5. Wow.

I logged in to break the news as I heard it on bloomberg at work. But it is not on SMH yet.

I am getting the popcorn ready.

  6. Lots of ammunition for a Federal campaign coming in next few hours for the anti LNP forces.

Starting with looking at all those tweets and media pressers from the LNP on the Labor leadership soap opera.

That includes before Rudd challenged to become PM again.

JulieBishopMP visited Abbott before QTime and told him he had lost confidence of the party, Turnbull indicated likewise after Q Time.]

JulieB looked very animated during QT, chatting to other MPs.

  8. Tony heading for humiliation. Shorter teem than wither Rudd or Gillard – because his own colleagues though he was even worse.

*German accent* I vish there vas a vord to describe zee joy I feel at zis turn of events…

  9. [oakes reckons Turnbull thinks he has the numbers]

Of course, different to him actually having the numbers. Would be amusing if he fell short by 1 vote again.

  10. Assuming he becomes leader, one of Turnbull’s hurdles will be to persuade his party that they need to listen to other voices, followed by persuading the public that his party has been persuaded.

  11. Problem is that losing Abbott will be a safety valve. Everyone will say good riddance and then go on to believing the lies in the Murdoch media.

  12. [Looking at a snap DD if Turnbull wins?]

Doubt it – it would be smarter to use the year+ to try and establish a ‘good government’. Of course, this didn’t help Napthine.
