ReachTEL: 55-45 to Labor

ReachTEL finds Malcolm Turnbull clearly favoured over Julie Bishop clearly favoured Tony Abbott.

Courtesy of the Seven Network, ReachTEL plays the beloved leadership crisis card of gauging voting intention under the current leader and the alternative. The results under Tony Abbott’s leadership are slightly worse than in the poll taken just before Australia Day, with Labor up 1.2% to 41.4% and the Coalition down 1.3%, with the Greens and Palmer United all but unchanged at 11.2% and 2.7%. Two-party preferred moves one point in Labor’s favour to 55-45. The kickers are the findings that the Coalition would be leading 54-46 under Malcolm Turnbull and 51-49 under Julie Bishop – with the usual caveat added that such questions present partisan opponents with an opportunity to lodge a tactical vote against the incumbent. A head-to-head question rates Malcolm Turnbull ahead of Julie Bishop 56.5-43.5, but with Bishop having a 54.4-45.6 edge among Coalition voters. The poll was conducted last night from a sample of 3502.

  1. How would the swearing in be with Gough. Did they just read a long line of portfolios, or did he just say as Prime Minister he chose not diverse those portfolios to other members?

[I have also decided this is the last time I am going to wade into a conversation where everyone except me was clearly bonkers 😀 ]

    Think I’ll take your advice.

  3. [Just ‘bad names’ that I’ve got it wrong. No argument at all.
Yet you expect women have to accept that argument?]

You being a woman has nothing to do with your argument being ridiculous. Just ask yourself whether you know men who don’t have children who are perfectly able of demonstrating empathy. Then ask if you know women who display less empathy.

  4. [If the Libs are genuine about running women, they have had good women to choose from. Sue Boyce and Kelly O’Dwyer would have done much better than JB.]

    I cant believe you’re serious.

  5. ratsak@530

Fess, no idea what the Libs rules are, and they probably don’t either (show of hands or secret ballot?).

Abbott could simply decide that the motion to spill has been passed and so a special meeting will be convened for the vote. If an overwhelming majority just want it done and now then they might arc up and force it, but if there is still a large enough number who want Abbott gone but aren’t too keen on Malcolm it will be accepted without too much complaint.

I would assume that at present there is only a ‘notice of motion’ and the motion itself will be moved itself at the meeting.

I would also expect it is open to the mover and seconder to modify the wording to include specifying matters such as timing and method of voting.

It would also be open to others to move an amendment to the motion, or if the motion is carried, to then move a motion proposing timing etc.

Subject to any party room rules the Libs may have, the meeting is master of its destiny.

    “I cant believe you’re serious.”

That feeling of incredulity you have right now is similar to what the rest of suffer whenever you talk about men. Speaking of empathy and all.

The reason I’m bringing up sexism is because why shouldn’t Julie Bishop run for leadership, in the face of Abbott’s crap leadership?

Why shouldn’t she? What makes silver-tongue Mal Turnbull more appealing? They’re both republicans.

Sure, she was a biatch to Gillard, so was Malcolm – just a bit more subtle – but when has that ever stopped a bloke from hankering, and putting his hand up, for the top job. The filth from men from both sides was worse.

Julie Bishop’s worked hard. She’s been patronised “a good loyal girl” to the point where ‘what’s she got to lose, apart from a parliamentary pension for life”?

And I was pre-empting this shit that women have to have had children to understand life.

Absolute crap. Girls are brought up on the need to take care of others.

    We understand it.

    What a load of stupidity.

It is up to Julie Bishop to decide if she wants to run and thinks she has the support.

A woman contested the LNP leadership today in Qld and the ALP in Qld led by a woman who will shortly be premier. I think she will do a very good job too.

  9. Apologies if this had already been discussed but what do PBers think will happen to Turnbull if he challenges and loses to Abbott.

Should he declare upfront that he will resign to the backbench or from politics if he loses the leadership ballot.

  10. Julie Bishop doesnt want to be PM.

She’d probably make a good one but she knows her limitations and she knows what she is good at.

She’s a fantastic deputy leader and a great Foreign Minister and she doesnt want to lose either position out of this.

  11. Turnbull needs to announce tomorrow that he will be a candidate if the spill is successful.

What does he have to lose other than a chance of becoming PM?

Who cares if he loses this time, Abbott will be dead meat swinging in the breeze before 75% of the partyroom turn to Turnbull to save them.

  12. Sachin,

I can’t imagine him keeping Comms. Sadly, Paul Fletcher will take over and he’s also a victim to the same ideology. At least he’s not as good at turd polishing so Labor might finally decided to stick up for the real NBN.

[You being a woman has nothing to do with your argument being ridiculous. Just ask yourself whether you know men who don’t have children who are perfectly able of demonstrating empathy. Then ask if you know women who display less empathy.]

You still haven’t made an argument, yet you’re demanding I give you another argument. So typical of men.

But, because I’m a woman, I will give you what a boy asks for. Evidence – even though, you can’t provide the same to me.

My great grand-uncle and my great grand-aunt had no children. They were married, first-cousins, and they, despite their childlessness, looked after the children of Victoria’s first settlers.

My grand-uncle, Charlie, loved my mum’s mother, my mum. And us. So yes, he loved children.

Yet, to read his will, the blokes were favoured and the women were not. Despite their care for women, all the property was given to men.

And so, the men, were given to believe that they had jurisdiction over women.

And so, it came to pass, that throughout the land, all men gave to all their sons the idea that they were worth more than women.

That they were the son and heirs, and the women had to go and find son and heirs.

And you know, and I know it. And you deny it. And I don’t.

    And that’s where we stand.

  14. @626 – I’m flabbergasted at this level of generalisation based on a few annecdotes.

Of course, I’m sure, as a man, I’m not allowed to be offended by vulgar generalisations …

  15. [Turnbull will say absolutely nothing until the last phone call.]

He’ll say nothing up till just prior to the party room meeting ala Rudd.

  16. [Julie Bishop doesnt want to be PM.

She’d probably make a good one but she knows her limitations and she knows what she is good at.]
Bishop was a completely incompetent education minister. When Gillard started the job the first thing she asked for was numeracy and literacy scores relative to socio economic status and was told by the federal education department that they didn’t have such information!

  17. [Colorado faces exquisite problem: what to do with the revenue from taxes on legal marijuana …]

its enough to make politicians high.

  18. vic

[My point re JBishop is that if she wants a shot at the leadership, being a woman is not a reason for her not doing so]

Do you think she didn’t see what happened to Gillard (by her own hand, as well) and that her own family has said she’d be “crucified” if she did? Because she’s a woman!

Why do reckon they said that she’d be crucified? Because she’d be subject to the same shit she dished out to Gillard, and it wouldn’t be pretty.

Gary Sparrow says confidently that “Julie Bishop doesn’t want to be PM.” And he knows? How?

And I ask, “Why shouldn’t she want to be PM?” She’d get a helluva pay rise, and not be such a fuckwit as Abbott. A bit more cluey, is our Julie, after seeing the damage she’d done to the last female.

So, I agree she shouldn’t NOT apply for the job because she’s a female, but she knows she has to very wary of applying for the job because of her past shit-depositing on the same job because according to BishopJ, “a woman shouldn’t have it, without merit.” And BishopK is not up to the task.

And now she wants the same job.

That’s why she doesn’t want to put herself forward, because she told the Aus public that a talent like Gillard couldn’t do it.

But Gillard did, and Julie Bishop will never be a patch on Julia Gillard.

  19. Gary Sparrow@619

Julie Bishop doesnt want to be PM.

She’d probably make a good one but she knows her limitations and she knows what she is good at.

She’s a fantastic deputy leader and a great Foreign Minister and she doesnt want to lose either position out of this.

Your first sentence is probably correct.

    The remainder are rubbish.

    1/3 not bad for a Lib. 😛

    From your post
“The same tight group of people with whom he worked up the three-word slogans each day in opposition remained largely intact into government, led notably bychief of staff Peta Credlin.”

AS it turns out the voters finally woke up from their stupor, shame the Jornos let Tony & co get away with the 3 worders for all those years

  21. cud chewer@621

    victoria,

Does this mean Labor falls one short of absolute majority at 44?

AFAIR still counting in another where the ALP is favoured.

But they have Peter Wellington’s support so no problems.

  22. Kezza there have been several leadership elections in the Liberal Party since 2007, name one instance where Bishop ran for Leader of the Liberal Party?

    victoria,

[Does this mean Labor falls one short of absolute majority at 44?]

Yes. They would have needed 45 for that

  24. [Kezza there have been several leadership elections in the Liberal Party since 2007, name one instance where Bishop ran for Leader of the Liberal Party?]

No but only because they always called for nominations while the women were making the tea! :p

I did answer you, and of course you shouldn’t be flabbergasted by vulgar generalisations, but you should have been convinced by evidence.

    Which I provided.

And which you so religiously deny.

    That’s what I consider vulgar.

  27. [SA Lib Sean Edwards says he’ll vote to spill Tony Abbott unless he guarantees Austn shipbuilders can bid for #subs contratc]

If there’s one thing Abbott is good at doing it’s promising what he needs to get him over the line without really meaning it.

  28. I don’t know who will be LNP leader next week but I surely Turnbull will challenge. His grin says yes.

As an ALP supporter I would prefer Turnbull to get his honeymoon out of the way sooner rather than later. If his honeymoon does turn the polls around I imagine it would be more difficult for him to call a snap poll now (although I’m sure some BS reason could be manufactured), but such calculations are a bit too cute for him to pass this opportunity by. And if he does fail the MSM consensus is he will win later.

It will be very amusing if someone outside the obvious gets up.

  29. Coorey has had an epiphany

[Gillard had her flaws as leader but she also had it a lot harder than Abbott. Gillard and her colleagues were savaged daily by the News Corp tabloids and the shock jocks, they were opposed by the powerful lobbies representing business, mining, energy and gambling, and she was being actively undermined by Rudd and his supporters. Abbott was undermined by nobody and News Corp and the lobby groups were on his side. This is his work.

His demise has little to do with not promoting the malcontents. Had the polls stayed healthy, they would be silent or ignored. His fortunes plunged in May last year when he broke his compact with the voters with a budget full of broken promises. After winning an election on trust, honesty and no surprises, he not only betrayed all that, but he treated the voters like dunderheads by telling them he had not broken promises.]

  30. victoria:

Yes I’ve noticed the penny seems to finally be dropping with a few of them. It only takes an Abbott govt for the scales to fall from their eyes, but still.

  31. No Kezza, you provided one anecdote. If that convinced anybody that your view that childless men are incapable of empathy I will be surprised.
All your anecdote proved is that some men view women as second class citizens. No intelligent person would dispute this when the evidence is writ large through history.

  32. Sprocket

What sort of guarantee for Abbott would be required?

An off the cuff unscripted comment?

Part of a formal speech with transcript delivered beforehand?

    A blood oath?

Fancy a Tory MP asking for a commitment from Abbott. His commitment, or lack thereof, is what this is all about.
