Highlights of day two

A surprisingly soft poll result for Kevin Rudd in his Brisbane seat of Griffith, trouble for both parties with candidates in marginal New South Wales seats, and some movement from the bookmakers.

With 31 days left to go:

ReachTEL has published the results of an automated phone poll of 702 respondents in Kevin Rudd’s electorate of Griffith, and it points to a 4% swing to the Liberal National Party – enough to pare back his margin to 4.5%, and raise doubts about Labor’s prospects in Liberal National Party marginals. The primary votes from the poll are 45.6% for Kevin Rudd, 41.0% for LNP candidate Bill Glasson and 8.0% for the Greens.

• Jaymes Diaz, the Liberal candidate for the crucial western Sydney seat of Greenway, has been a big hit on social media over the past day or two, and not in a good way. Quizzed by a Ten Network reporter about the content of his party’s six-point plan to “stop the boats”, Diaz could manage only one, offering only the clumsiest of platitudes in place of the other five. He was eventually put out of his misery when a minder intervened to bring the interview to a close. Heath Aston of Fairfax offers some interesting background on the circumstances behind his endorsement.

• Also earning raspberries has been David Bradbury, Labor’s member for the equally important western suburbs seat of Lindsay, who queried a radio interviewer about being a Liberal Party member and ominously asked him to reveal what his surname was.

• Labor appears to be in a muddle over who it will run in Craig Thomson’s seat of Dobell. Former Gosford deputy mayor Trevor Drake emerged as the only nominee for preselection a month ago, but the party executive has declined to ratify his endorsement. However, Kevin Rudd has been rebuffed in his approach to one his youthful senior advisers from his first tenure as prime minister, current Coles executive Andrew Charlton, who says he is not available due to family reasons. Ean Higgins of The Australian reports the party had been alerted to a finding by Gosford council’s conduct committee that Drake had failed to disclose interests when council considered development applications from a firm for which he acted as a solicitor, although it cleared him of breaching its code of conduct. Higgins also reports concern over “presentational difficulties” relating to Drake’s status as a former Liberal Party member, and the fact that he doesn’t live in the electorate.

• Two agencies have moved their odds slightly in the Coalition’s favour in the wake of Monday’s poll results. Tom Waterhouse has the Coalition paying $1.24, down from $1.27, with Labor out from $3.50 to $4, while Centrebet has the Coalition in from $1.27 to $1.25 and Labor out from $3.60 to $4.

  1. Psephos

She’s a pharmacist, not a doctor. And she’s the head of pharmacy, not the head of pharmacology (a hospital as small as that wouldn’t have a head of pharmacology).

She must be a good administrator to be the head of pharmacy, and know quite a bit about budgets, legislation and management which should make her a very good MP if she gets in.

  2. Yes, like that time when Howard was asked if Jeanette was gay;

Billy McMahon was thought to be gay.

    ML,

Would you please remind us which interviewer/reporter asked Sonia McMahon whether her partner was gay?

  3. [Don’t forget that ABC series At Home with Paul which pilloried Keating, his foreigner wife, dog named ‘Bob’ etc etc.]

I know, its just terrible isnt it.

I have absolutely no memory of Max Gillies mocking Hawke mercilessly. There were absolutely no comedy shows about Howard, I never remember hearing comedians mimicking his voice….no-one plays Rudd.

Its just Gillard…..life is so unfair, a politician who is mocked in Australia (you never would have imagined anything like this could ever happen here, eh? Just shocking! 🙂

What a hoot this place is sometimes!

  4. Confessions

I actually DO agree about the at home with Julia program.

It was a disgrace – but it was not journos who put it together.

The ABC should have been condemned for allowing it

  5. Julie is so gosh awful.

About someone just got stuck into it.

She has perambulated or refused to answer all questions.

  6. [Billy McMahon was thought to be gay.]

Even if true, was this question ever posed to Mr McMahon in a media interview? Ever?

You really are clutching at straws here to make apologies for the personal abuse PM Gillard received from the mainstream media.

Your support for it is noted and I hold you in equal contempt to those who provided and broadcast the abuse.

  7. [That was exactly the formula that worked in Robertson with Deb O’Neill, after the Belinda Neal saga. So maybe it will work again in Dobell.]

Yes, here’s hoping it can. She’s facing an opponent who has had a massive head start, but clearly she’s unperturbed and willing to muck in.

  8. [ LOL, yes never mind the immediate 10-point jump in the ALP’s PV. ]

I notice you conveniently omitted the next para of my post, lefty:

[ Would they have narrowed as much so quickly? Probably not. Would they have eventually narrowed to where we are now? Probably. ]

But by all means let’s not let anything get in the way of your strawman argument.

  9. [I have absolutely no memory of Max Gillies mocking Hawke mercilessly]

Oh, I must of missed Gillies when he laughed about Mr Hawke being drowned. I also cannot recall any time he was questioned about whether Hazel was a lesbian by a radio station. I also must have missed the time Hawke’s father died of shame and when opposition leader Peacock said the Hawke Government should die of shame.

I am young, so I guess I missed these things!

Thanks for the history lesson, pops.

  10. JulieB does not wish to talk about asylum seekers wanting their money back.

She has not been briefed? Colour me purple!

  11. [WE SHOULD BE ALL VERR VERY PROUD OF HIM]

    I agree, Mysay!

Im bloody proud of him for taking on Murdoch. He shwoing more guts than any leader in my lifetime has on this score.

Murdoch knows this means he doesnt get away scot-free, even if he succeeds. some 50% of Australians at least will see him and his co. as the UK now does: a besmirched grubby and serial abuser of power, an unfit person to own a media outlet, and whose empire should clearly be broken up in the public interest – and would under ANY reasonable media ownership regime in a modern democracy.

I salute Rudd for not bowing down to or hiding from Murdoch.

  12. Lateline …Under caretaker Bishop just confirmed Morrison will request a briefing on whether boat numbers are reducing and whether Manus Island refugees are asking to go back to Iran. Presumably some journo will sooner or later ask the obvious question…..

  13. [Essendon Bombers coach James Herd will reportedly step down at 10am tomorrow, ahead of the anticipated midday release of the ASADA findings.]

  14. The DT has her as

[Former Wyong councillor and Wyong Hospital’s chief pharmacist Ms McBride, her background has Labor Party chiefs heaving a sigh of relief.
    ]

  15. I can’t wait until after the election.

Gillardistas will be screaming at the Ruddites that she could have won the election, especially if Rudd didn’t white ant her.

Ruddites meanwhile will be screaming at the Gillardistas that she destroyed the Labor Party brand.

I’m going to have popcorn at the ready

Julie will not diss the Murdoch rags headlines. Bitch is as bitch does.]

Um ar….confessions and Darren Laver are going to come down on you like a tonne of bricks for that comment.

    You are, aren’t you?

    🙂

  17. [I have absolutely no memory of Max Gillies mocking Hawke mercilessly. There were absolutely no comedy shows about Howard, I never remember hearing comedians mimicking his voice….no-one plays Rudd.]

The Gillies report, Rubbery Figures, and plenty of others Hawke and Howard were parodied alot during the 80s.

Personal Fav was Rubbery figures with such classics as the ‘leader line’ and ‘Charisma Trek’

  18. [Bishop just confirmed Morrison will request a briefing on whether boat numbers]
She didn’t. She just said that the issue was not for her but for the scum that is Scoot.

  19. Darren

McMahons sexuality was very much an open issue- subject of many many jokes.

His wife copped a lot for her clothing too. The famous split skirt affair.

No one raised it in an interview but remember in those days no one discussed sex EVER. It was a major legal cost to make allegations about a woman”s reputation so sex scandal just rarely happened.

Gorton and Ainsly Gotto was the exception

  20. So how are the Bludgers going?

Still venting their hatred towards Rudd and screaming that Gillard would have won the election for sure I bet? 😆

Well, speaking of betting, Abbott has almost moved into the lay down misere range!

    PM

I could call it, but I will wait to see if Rudd can hopefully gather some support after their first debate 😎

So what is the difference between a Pharmacy Department and a Pharmacology Department?]

Pharmacists dispense drugs that doctors prescribe.

A pharmacologist is a doctor that specialises in medications, their effects on the physiology and interactions with other drugs inter alia

  22. New2This@1472

    Bishop very impressive.

Absolutely – I often wonder how she manages to apply her own makeup without turning herself to stone.

I guess that (like the Gorgon) the effect doesn’t work in a mirror.

  23. [So what is the difference between a Pharmacy Department and a Pharmacology Department?]

Every hospital has a Pharmacy Department. They dispense and prepare the medications to the patients.

A Pharmacology Department is very uncommon in a hospital. They would mainly be responsible for research and teaching about medications and would be a mix of doctors, researchers and pharmacists.

  24. [Essendon Bombers coach James Herd will reportedly step down at 10am tomorrow, ahead of the anticipated midday release of the ASADA findings.]

Well that’s very, very sad. A man I’ve always admired.

  25. WE SHOULD BE ALL VERR VERY PROUD OF HIM

Well said. It’s about time a Labor leader took on Murdoch, and any true Labor supporter would be applauding Rudd for taking this stand.

There are bigger things at stake than the wounded pride and egos of a few sore losers.

  26. Heh. Elder on the LNP:

[Perhaps they should be more concerned than they are. Abbott’s economic credentials will not see out the week. His policies on the environment, telecommunications and workplace relations are arrant garbage and nobody will change their vote on account of them. The education policy where Abbott promised to do bugger-all was actually more credible than his grudging admission that Gonski has a point. ]
