Western Australian election live thread

A thread for discussion of the Western Australian election count as it unfolds.

A thread for discussion of the Western Australian election count as it unfolds. I won’t be offering my usual live blogging as I will be part of ABC Radio’s live coverage, along with federal Labor MP Gary Gray and Liberal Senator David Johnston. You will be able to follow this on News Radio or any local WA ABC station.

  1. Just thought I pop in…

Isn’t 60/40 the same result as for NSW?

    And QLD initially?

We know that WA wouldn’t be good for Labor so no real to loss there.

However time has passed for QLD and VIC liberal governments so they won’t be as kind to Liberals.

  2. Confessions,

Still, I’m not sure. What did the last Labor Government do? Many people still grumble about Kennett and is a dirty word in a lot of country areas, hence the Liberals got slaughtered in 2002. I’m not aware of the ALP having that bad a reputation in WA.

  3. On current figures, Labor looks like losing Albany, Forrestfield, Balcatta, Joondalup, Collie-Preston, Kimberley, Pilbara, Perth and Midland. No useful figures yet for West Swan, Gosnells or Morley.

  4. Bugler, maybe the Liberal party is attracting voters their way, rather than the Labor party repelling them? It’s sort of funny that you don’t even consider that :D.

  5. Julie Bishop sees implications for Steve Smith in Perth. At this rate, Freo could be Labor’s only federal seat after Sept 14.

  6. Eric Ripper hung on too long – by the time he left the leadership Labor was already rooted. Don’t forget he stopped Allanah being leader of the Opposition, she would have kicked arse

  7. Psephos:

In Warren-Blackwood the Greens preferenced the Liberal candidate, as did Labor.

What difference would it have made to Redman’s numbers had the Greens preferenced the ALP? Am thinking specifically re those booths in Margaret River moving into Redman’s electorate in the redistribution.

  8. Smith agreed federal issues played a role (after all, he kept federal pols out of the WA campaign). But he did say, as he had to, that the federal election would go down to the wire.

  9. Cannington and Mirrabooka now looking a bit better for Labor. Collie-Preston is very close. Mandurah looks secure, Willagee also looks OK on early figures. Still no figures for Gosnells.

  10. To be honest (wash my mouth) I don’t mind Michelle Roberts losing – most of my favourites are back in (and Freo is Labor again yippee)

  11. At least Labor’s best performers are by and large back in – so its not like Queensland where a rump is unable to call that arse to account

  12. So seems to me that a lot of the swing to the Libs is coming from the Greens and Others.

I can understand the swing from the Others as they were largley Lib supporting Others anyway. But, Greens realy dont seem to be doing well at all.

  13. Labor seems to have won Armadale, Bassendean, Belmont (close), Butler, Cannington, Cockburn, Fremantle, Girrawheen, Kwinana, Mandurah, Maylands, Mirrabooks (close), Rockingham, Victoria Park, Warnbro and Willagee (close). That’s 16. Collie-Preston, Midland and Perth will be very close. Still no decent figures in West Swan, Morley and Gosnells

  14. Toorak Toff

“Julie Bishop says Julia Gillard is toxic in WA. Does not augur well.”

Gee really? That seems out of character! She’s been nothing but enthusiastic about the ALP up until this point!

  15. Julie Bishop says Julia Gillard is toxic in WA.

If someone farted in the tally room at the moment, Bishop would blame Julia Gillard.

  16. On these figures, the prospect of LNP winning 4 Senate seats is well and truly in play, so there are definitely Federal implications with the result

  17. Midland and Perth looking salvagable if Greens prefs flow through. Definite losses seem to be: Albany, Balcatta, Forrestfield, Joondalup, Kimberley and Pilbara. So the losses will be somewhere between 6 and 9 unless something changes in the later counting.

  18. If someone farted in the tally room at the moment, Bishop would blame Julia Gillard.

No……if no-one farts in the tally room, it will be claimed to be a result of keeping Julia out of WA

  19. As the votes are coming in, Girrawheen is getting closer and closer to being a loss for the ALP even though it was safe.
51.3 to 48.7 for Labor at the moment with 56% counted.

  20. No……if no-one farts in the tally room, it will be claimed to be a result of keeping Julia out of WA

No, it will be because Tony is such an asset and did visit W.A. that we are now permanently free from flatulence in W.A.

No doubt the Federal Libs have a policy on this.

  21. We win Mandurah. No surprises with the Lib candidate in the seat intricately connected with the fraud and misconduct allegations with Peel Health Campus.

  22. No doubt the Federal Libs have a policy on this.

Indeed we do, flatulence is of higher quality when produced by 457 visa holders.

Australian workers just don’t have the same windy skillsets

  23. Ah, I’m not sure Grylls is correct about the founding of the Country Party. Wasn’t it founded in Canberra, rather than the Pilbarra? Can anyone verify that?

  24. When the Country Party was founded the white population of the Pilbara was about a dozen prospectors. It was founded simultaneously in rural areas of NSW, Vic and WA.
