Essential Research: 54-46 to Coalition

Bernard Keane at Crikey reports the latest Essential Research poll has the Coalition’s lead on two-party preferred widening from 53-47 last week to 54-46. It also records a slump in Julia Gillard’s personal ratings, with approval down seven from a month ago to 34 per cent and disapproval up six to 54 per cent. Tony Abbott has also gone backwards: down four on approval to 38 per cent and up four on disapproval to 48 per cent. Gillard’s lead as preferred prime minister has narrowed from 43-35 to 41-36. Otherwise:

The view that climate change is real and human-caused has softened since May. Just 50% of voters believe it is happening and is caused by humans, while 39% believe climate change is just a normal fluctuation in the climate; those figures were 52-36% in May, but 45-36% in December. Liberal voters are much more likely to not believe in human-caused climate change — 55% of them think it is purely natural and only 34% think human cause it, while 83% of Green voters and 64% of Labor voters think it is caused by humans. Of those who believe climate change is caused by humans, 48% are “somewhat confident” it can be averted if we take action now, and 13% are very confident, but 36% are only a little or not at all confident we can stop it even if we act now. Support for the government’s proposal to price carbon remains flat, with support unchanged at 38% and opposition up 1 point at 49%. Awareness of the government’s proposal to send asylum seekers to Malaysia is relatively high, with 27% of voters saying they know a lot about it and 31% saying they know “something about” it, while 38% say they know little or nothing about it. Feelings are finely balanced, with 40% saying they support it and 39% opposing it. Greens voters object most strongly (51%) and Labor voters are its strongest supporters (47%).

I should have the full report for you shortly.

UPDATE: Full report here. There is in fact no change at all on the primary vote figures: Coalition 46 per cent, Labor 34 per cent, Greens 12 per cent.

  1. Frank don’t you think you’ve made that point a 100000000 times on PB. We know your opinion…you’re entitled to it.

    I am an anti-Labor supporter 😀

30% Labor Primary means all that’s left are the rusted ones such as your good self 😀 😀

Oh they are – funny how they only appear for “Good” coalition polls like this.

  3. I actually believe that climate change, or “global warming” is a combination of natural and human causes. I can’t really blame one or the other entirely. I guess it depends on your knowledge of science.

yep maybe some unseen force makes objects fall to the ground……..

  4. Darren Laver,

“Pauline is thick and poorly advised.

Why is she not in England again anyway?”

Because she is determined. Not the best thing, though.

    Your timing has been superb.

Funny that how so-called “Dissatisfied Liberal Party Members” suddenly appear when the polls are magically good for them.

If Abdul Aziz al ash-Shaikh the current Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia visiting Aust, would they insist the PM meets him as well? #auspol

  7. [Just did a Jeremiah check. And, and, and… with Newspoll results… the sky has fallen in. Glug.]

Sky still firmly in place at mine. Complete with beautiful full moon.

  8. I did pick a good time for a comeback didnt I?

But look at it this way….

All those good Labor polls in 2000 made Kimbo complacent and he blew it in 2001.

If the polls stay this good for the Tories maybe they’ll fall into the same trap.

I am just hoping that the Libs can knock off Tone and if and I state again IF they have good policies then they’re a good shot in 2013.

    Inshallah!

gus, surely not with the promise of 64 Mesmas?

You can’t generalise like that, from just one hat. 😀

Well, I hope we have something decent enough to hold over our head to prevent objects from hitting us along the way.

All the PR in all msm, yes that includes the ABC, has still failed to topple a govt. despite all efforts #NBN will be built & #CT applied.

  14. Glen:

One policy shift the coalition have made since last election is to adopt a broadband policy of FTTN. From memory this is the policy Labor took to the 2007 election.

    bobkat proposes steel mesh

    your alternative?

  16. deblonay @ 742:

[What this poll shows is that the stead rise in the vote of those who dissent from the view that global warning is cased by humans shows the success of Abbott and the Denialists in winning public support.
There is now the fact of “Denialists” making up about 4 in every 10 people.
I understand that only in Australia and the USA is this the case]

    I agree with your analysis.

When one compares our total of 437 million metric tons of CO2 emissions to, say, China (6534), USA (5833) and India (1495), ours pales into insignificance. These comparative figures present a very good stick for the Opposition to belt the ALP with.

As reflected by the polls, I think the scare campaign over the carbon tax is working and that’s why the Government needs to sell its policies better and finalise its carbon tax compensation package asap.

  17. You know you’re a goner when you go on for a touchy feely 60minutes interview….

    😀

Oh and Finns play nice 🙂 No point being a sore loser (at this stage in the political game)…

  18. Gusface,

    “bobkat proposes steel mesh

Hope to God a mysterious man in a blue box will come in and rescue me so I can escape the effects of falling objects in the sky.

You mean like Abbott and his 3 Daughters 🙂

This idea they haven’t sold it properly is BS to say the least. They’ve had this timetable from the word go and they’re following it. The details will be announced in a matter of a few weeks.

  21. “Elections is 2 years away etc…”

    Yes.

But Abbott within 3 on the PPM, despite him continuing to do nothing, is hugely concerning.

Labor must have a lot of faith in the “long game” approach… because they need to get back the narrative, regardless of how long they have until an election.

  22. [Yes im back from a great long weekend and to be handed this great newspoll….]
And Labor will still be the government tomorrow, next week and next year so enjoy away old son.

  23. Maybe that was the difference between the impact of their two interviews eh Frank lol!

Such lovely daughters Tony does have and a loving wife good on him for that I might not like the guy politically but hey.

  24. Hey Frank and the other Gillard disciples….hate to say I told you so! 😆

Yep, that political knifing of exactly one year ago is looking like a smart idea. 😉

And spoken like a true tory who is hardwired – despite pretending to play”Independent”.

Your silly game doesn’t fool me, or most others here.

At least be honest about your roots.

  26. [Labor must have a lot of faith in the “long game” approach… because they need to get back the narrative, regardless of how long they have until an election.]
It’s amazing how we look at one poll and believe everything it says.

  27. [Hey Frank and the other Gillard disciples….hate to say I told you so!]
This says more about what a sorry state you’re in evan than Frank. You call yourself a Labor supporter but delight in a bad poll for them.

    Exactly.

And you were right about Evan gloating like the true Liberal he REAKKY is – like Glen.

All we need is TP and we have the 3 stooges.

  29. One thing that i was forced to sit though on sunday was Gillards 60min Man cave expo. I enjoyed it in the end, though my Labor companions ended up shaking their heads. The collective across the couch was “what was she and Labor thinking”. Fancy touring the man cave with the PM standing out in the canberra cold like a shag on a rock, that great shot in its self would account for at least a 2 point hit in the newspoll

  30. I am a Liberal supporter over being a Labor one Frank.

I dont always agree with the Libs but I rarely agree with Labor.

Just admit it the knifing of Rudd has gone from bad to worse…big majority smashed…minority government…relying on the Greens for everything…loss of support for carbon tax…cant get much over 30% on first preferences…lost NSW and VIC…and has a politically dead PM who you cant touch because if you do the game is well and truly up…must be awful to have a dead wood PM that you cant remove and stick someone else in who’d do a good job like Stephen Smith…
