Happy new year everybody. Limiting our brief to known knowns, we have the following entries in the 2011 electoral calendar.
The NSW Labor government’s date for the electoral mincer is set for March 26. Mumble man Peter Brent has bravely ventured that Labor will do better than opinion polls in 2010 said they would, perhaps emerging with around 30 out of 93 seats. My tip is that this prediction of Brent’s won’t scrub up quite as nicely after the event as those he made in relation to Victoria.
John Brumby’s exit from politics will result in a by-election in his ultra-safe northern Melbourne seat of Broadmeadows, probably in February or March. According to David Rood of The Age, early contenders for Labor preselection include former Brumby adviser and Labor state secretary Nick Reece, former adviser to Steve Bracks and lobbyist Danny Pearson, Hume councillor Burhan Yigit, ex-Labor party officer and right-wing figure Mehmet Tillem, recently defeated Labor upper house MP Nathan Murphy and former Hobsons Bay Council mayor Bill Baarini. One might surmise that other Victorian by-elections will follow before the year is through.
Four of the 15 seats in Tasmania’s Legislative Council will become vacant this year, with elections almost certain to be held on May 7. These include two of the three seats held by Labor, with the other two being among the 11 held by independents (Vanessa Goodwin in Pembroke being the sole Liberal). In the normal course of events, two or three seats are on rotation to become vacant each year: this year is the turn of Launceston, Murchison and Rumney. Veteran independent Don Wing is retiring in Launceston, which will be constested for the Liberals by state party president Sam McQuestin. Sitting independent Ruth Forrest will seek another term in Murchison she will be opposed by a Labor candidate in the person of Waratah-Wynyard mayor Kevin Hyland (UPDATE: Kevin Bonham in comments advises that Hyland is no longer a starter), but not by the Liberals. Labor’s Lin Thorp is up for re-election in Rumney, and I can find no mention of potential challengers (it’s not unknown for Legislative Council members to be returned unopposed, but the Greens at least can be relied upon to take a shot in metropolitan seats). The bonus fourth seat is a by-election caused by the retirement of former Treasurer Michael Aird. Labor’s new nominee is Derwent deputy mayor Craig Farrell.

Yours is the most idiotic post
“that you should even ask a Q , says it about Bob browns sleesy hypocracy , happy top do one think and preach his BS moralistic ideas to normal aussies not caring if they lose there jobs from his flunky & uneconamic ideas”
What?
I asked you what was hypocritical and that was your response?
You declared that the Greens supporters wouldn’t front up to explain the Greens actions. Well I did. I say uthere’s nothing hypocritical about it and that article puts it completely into context.
Your reply was pure unitelligible garbage.
Hey can anyone tell me what the situation is like around Beechmont Qld? My brother is there and my son (teenager) is going to be flying to stay with him on Wednesday for a few days. I know it is in the mountains but from J6Ps description of his situation even the hill people are facing problems. It is a little late to ring my bro with the WA QLd time difference.

I don’t think Ron or Vera are capable of understanding subtle points like that.
They seem to think that if you say you’d like to change the rules, you have to start playing by the changed rules before everyone else. It’s called “Stupid Logic”.

“youse partisen greens try and catch up and read what was said showing Browns blatant hypocracy”
I couldn’t think of anything worse than trying to decipher one of your arguments.
Why should they play by the new rules they want to create before the rules are changed? How is this hypocrisy?
If I want the Police to changethe speed limit to 40km/hr do I have to start driving everywhere at 40km/h?
Your logic is dumb.
Is this the longest pollbludger thread ever?
How can so much be said by so few about so little?
Ahh The Green Army are out in force defending St Bob’s Hypocrisy re political donations.
Astroboy – it’s called being a Hypocrite – crticising someone for accepting “Dirty Money”, then doing the same thing yoursself.
Good Nite All,
Let’s pray for a drier day tomorrow!
Bemused, how many times? For the last time!
In any field I am prepared to side with 98% of the consensus of expert opinion. That includes the opinions of expert climate scientists as well.
Note: I therefore do not consider myself a global warming sceptic!
However, where I dsagree with the supposedly intellegent global warming proponents is that – it is possible that the consensus opinions of climate scientists may be wrong – something that the supposedly super intellegent Greens can’t comprehend.
Therefore I have every justification and right to comment on how good global warming is going.
Importantly, it’s the way the ordinary voter sees it, and at the moment, oh yeah (global warming) it’s going real good. 😆

The technical term for Centre’s problem is ‘agnotology’ the culturally-induced ignorance or doubt, particularly the publication of inaccurate or misleading scientific data. This is a phenomenon that has superceded ideology in certain political circles.
John Quiggin wrote about it here Ideology and agnotology
Now where does Centre fit in that?
Brisbane

“However, where I dsagree with the supposedly intellegent global warming proponents is that – it is possible that the consensus opinions of climate scientists may be wrong – something that the supposedly super intellegent Greens can’t comprehend.”
This is nonsense. Of course it’s possible that they are ‘wrong’. But you claim is so generic and non-specific as to be meaningless. Wrong about what? The source of CO2 emissions? The physical properties of CO2 as a gas? The feedbacks?
“Therefore I have every justification and right to comment on how good global warming is going”
You should however qualify your statements with a preface that says “I have no idea what I am talking about but,…”
Bemused
And the beauty of ‘agnotology’ is that you can sound all ‘intellectual’ with your ignorance!!
Frank
what is diff in attitude about Bob brown’s hypocacy between @6491 and @ 6519 ?

Astrobleme, I am surprised you are still talking about climate change given your lack of understanding of the economical consequences to Australia if we were to pursue the policies of the Greens where major polluters don’t act!
We will witness an outcome with this debate believe me, when Combet/ALP present policy to the parliament.
And the Greens are going to be having a PB record whinge! Can’t wait 😆

Would Beechmont be in the Sunshine Coast forecast area?
Gweneth,
He should be ok at this stage. Providing it doesn’t come this far south. And if there are dramas he is welcome to stay here until his uncle is able to collect him. (Northern Gold Coast).
but we all knew that

I’m not much good at Qld geography either Gweneth. I’m sure a local can help though

“Astroboy – it’s called being a Hypocrite – crticising someone for accepting “Dirty Money”, then doing the same thing yoursself.”
Prove the money is dirty then.
I can see that money from Clive Palmer is dirty, but where is the link between the Greens and Mr Wolf?
He said he was worried about Climate Change, so gave the Greens the money so they could advertise their position. The Greens position has remained the same on CLimate Change for years.
All you and Ron have is assertions. Strange that Ron tried a different track to you. Do you realise you are arguing different points?
Centre @ 6533
I don’t know what the Greens policies actually are, but policies recommended by Prof Garnaut would shave only a small amount of economic growth if implemented. The figures have been quoted on here previously but you go on ignoring them with your deliberately manufactured ignorance stating they would be massive.
If Australia committed to action our position in world forums would be much more credible.
Gweneth,
He is gold coast hinterland region. But it is so far so good here. Wet and high but nothing (that you can’t get around)breached or closed yet.

“Astrobleme, I am surprised you are still talking about climate change given your lack of understanding of the economical consequences to Australia if we were to pursue the policies of the Greens where major polluters don’t act!”
You do realise that the SCIENCE of climate change will determine what is economic. Because to really understand the economics you first have to understand the science. If you can’t understand the science how can you assign a cost? This is about changing an external cost.
Your premis is that it will cost Australia more to act, than to not act. Yet you have no idea. Have you compared the costs? Do you know what the cost of not acting is?
This my first chance today to have a read of today’s posts and I was struck very early on, firstly by the ignorance of the journalist, and secondly, how enthusiastically this ignorance was adopted as “holy writ” by BK (post 58530 and Laocoon (post 5860).
First off let me make it clear that this post is neither in supports nor does it condemns the push to impose GST on internet purchases from overseas on items less then $1000. Its sole purpose is to show that the argument of the journalist does nothing but exposes his ignorance.
To quote the article referred to by BK ands quoted from by Laocoon –
“Consumers feel manipulated. Shop windows in Melbourne’s CBD are festooned with signs for sales of up to 50 per cent off. Shoppers quite correctly find themselves wondering just how fair dinkum the pricing regimes are. If the stores can cut a third off the price of a standard item this week, why couldn’t they do it a month ago?”
Consumers may feel manipulated but it is because they are bloody ignorant about what all those sale signs mean.
Firstly, if something is on sale it does not mean that it is being sold at a profit. Many items have a limited shelf life. Food is a very good example. If you care to check out the bakeries and cake shops close to closing you will find that they are almost giving items away that they have not been able to sell. If they can’t sell what is on hand they have to toss them out. It is cheaper to sell at a loss that it is to scrap the item.
Now admittedly the items being talked about here are not perishable like cakes and bread but the principle is still the same
The same thing goes for a lot of items including clothes except their shelf life is more then one day. Most retailers cannot afford to keep old stock in storage because it cost them money and reduces their available working capital which they need to purchase next seasons stock. It is cheaper to sell it for at a loss and even if they have a contract that allows them to return goods to the manufactures because they still may have to pay the cartage.
All items have a different shelf life. Hammers can be kept for a long time because they don’t change but computers have to be turned over very quickly because what is new today will be superceded next week or month. So what you find is that early in the shelf life of an item it is at its dearest and the greater is the profit made by the retailer. Late in the shelf life of the same item it might be cheaper to sell it at a loss that to even try and break even.
There is even a special accounting practice call “just in time” where the movement in stock in and out is monitored so that stock is not held in storage longer than it take to maximize profit – see . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-in-time_%28business%29
So when the sign say 50% off what may be happening is that not only is the retailer forgoing some or all of its profit it is in fact forgoing recovering all of its expenses. In those cases he will try to recover its variable costs and as much of his fixed costs as possible see – http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?itemId=1073790696&type=RESOURCES.
It is also worth remembering that usually retailers don’t have high profit margins per item but rely on turnover to make their profit. This does not mean that there is not a large mark up on wholesale because the retailer still has to pay for all those things you see in the shop like lighting and cleaning and sales staff, the list is a mile long.
Goodnight all.
So Clive Palmer bankrolling The Nats so they can get Elected is bad – but St Bob accepting Money so the can get elected is ok ??
As I said – Rank Hypocrisy.
Ron
“YOU HAV MISQUOTED CENTRE by blatant selctive ommission making your post in effect a lie”

If the Polly Sponsorship game is allowed to be played the way it is in the united states then we are on the way to destroying democracy in this country.
