The latest weekly Essential Research survey has the two parties locked together on 50-50 for the third week running. There is also perfect stability on the primary vote, with the Coalition on 44 per cent, Labor on 41 per cent and the Greens on 8 per cent. A question on preferred Liberal leader has Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull essentially neck and neck at 23 per cent and 22 per cent respectively, which compares with 26 per cent and 20 per cent for a similar question in September. Public opinion on the banking industry is shown to be what elite opinion would consider unorthodox: 64 per cent of respondents believe they need more regulation against only 4 per cent for less and 20 per cent for “present regulation about right”, and 62 per cent would support the establishment of a government-owned bank against only 17 per cent opposed.
On the question of whether James Packer should be allowed to become a major shareholder in the Ten Network, 28 per cent said he should and 24 per cent said he shouldn’t – respondents were agreeably given a “don’t care” option, and 38 per cent of them put it to use. Enjoyably, 50 per cent agreed the government should not allow “one company to own the majority of Australia’s major newspapers”, after it was pointedly put to them that News Limited did just that. The ABC is found to be head and shoulders above other television channels on the question of trust, with Sky News enjoying a small but significant lead over the free-to-air commercial networks.

What’s wrong with it? This is just a formalisation of something that has been occurring anyway. Year 10 they expect students to aligne subjects for their chosen career path.

They obviously require an entire network of new public servants to be hired. It will also require a complex period of consultation and negotiation with teacher and parent groups.
Then consultants will be brought in. They will produce a draft strategy wich neither the teachers or the parents will approve of.
Then when finally implemented will see cookie-cutter career advice cut and pasted from google, based on results, subjects studied and personality testing. It will be as useful as compulsory horoscopes. And three times as expenses.
What can I tell you. There’s no accounting for taste. Some of the supplementary questions in the poll might cheer you up.

Seriously, what does Brumby mean? Who knows what their long term career goals are at 15? Those who do don’t need the help. Those who don’t need to get experience of the world and finish their studies. If it is just matching subject choices to Uni preferences, that is no diferent to what happens at schools now.

If Brumby said he was putting on 200 more counsellors because we aren’t helping kids learn to cope, then that is excellent. But this is just a policy looking for a problem.
I mean, has anybody ever mentioned the desperate need for standardisation of career counselling as the issue in education or youth unemployment.

i would feel insulted i was even ask
If kids are taught the value of money & how to save then there may never be a need to live on credit.
Same goes for financial planners. Teach the kids to be savvy with their dough & they won’t be sitting ducks for financial predators.

I have no idea what you are talking about. When you actually know the details instead of guessing then an informed opinion can be reached. Not one based on opinion and ideology. You have no idea the set up. All you’ve come out with is that it will cost, won’t work and the government shouldn’t get involved in a student’s development.

Sorry for the sarcasm what came to mind is my Oh at the moment is handling hundreds of work experience application.
then there is the ones that cannot be bothered but i want discuss them.
Then there is the parents who want little daring to do something the school cannot oblige with re insurance. then there is the kids that dont turn up to work experience
these are not high numbers but very embarrassing .
So i am looking at this from another angle.
I think we pander to children far to much it should be the parent who work these thing out.
Teachers have enough on their plate and beleive me this would be handled by the teachers if it arrives in the letter box what teenager is going to read it not many i would say.
So during maths lessons , yes discuss investments for sure.
But really kids dont know what they want in about gr. 8 dun no is about the standard answer.
Haha i saw David Graham at the Penrith by-elections handing out for the Liberal Party with a few National Party members/upper-class Liberals. A political commentator of the Channel 7/9 variety he probably could be but i don’t think he has the substance to hack it as a politician.
