Essential Research: 58-42

westpollgraphic141209

The latest Essential Research survey has Labor’s lead at 58-42 for the third successive week. Also included are leadership approval ratings (Kevin Rudd predictably little changed on a fortnight ago; Tony Abbott with mediocre ratings, which is much better than Turnbull had been doing); Copenhagen (important, but unlikely to reach agreement); and “Christmas spending”. We’ve also had a 400-sample of Western Australian voters from Westpoll (see right) which has federal Labor’s lead in the state at 53-47 (compared with 53-47 against in 2007). The West Australian takes this to mean Abbott “has largely proved a turn-off for WA voters”, but it might equally be to do with Westpoll’s low-sample volatility, which has seen the score go from 55-45 in February to 50-50 in May to 53-47 in December.

  1. [If a kid was searching forf pussy cats, what do you expect to be included amongst the results ?]

ahhhh, you have to be topical. Uno numero “Pussy Tiger”

  2. 2134

Its amazing you think a word like ‘obscene’ reveals language in need of moderation, but raise no comment when another pro-censorship poster desribes the arguments of those they disagree with as ‘excreta.’

You are also being completely oversensitive if you think my, or anyone else’s comments directed at you are ‘sniping attacks.’

    “They’re not [looking at porn]…”

How would you know, if you’re not monitioring their internet access?

You seem to be conflating the meanings of the terms “impossible” and “very hard” in the posts above. I repeat, I have never said it is impossible to stumble upon offensive content, just very hard. Just because a child isn’t likely to find something inappropriate, doesn’t mean they won’t, and is by no means an excuse to not monitor their internet use. I also have repeatedly not said it is a good idea to “hover” and you should stop suggesting I have, its very dishonest of you.

I freely admit I could have been more clear in my disctinctions between ‘websites’ and ‘chat rooms, message boards’ etc. Child predators do operate in chat rooms particularly (http://www.microsoft.com/protect/parents/social/predators.aspx) but the so called clean feed will not and can not protect them from this. While I still think its hard for anyone to stumble upon offensive or illegal material, if kids are using chat rooms its much more likley they will be, and its impossible to find out after the fact.

What I don’t understand is that you seem to indicate that kids won’t go looking for naughty material (myself I am not so sure) and wouldn’t understand it even if they did. Fine. Then how can you even be ambivalent to the government wasting $130 million on this useless so called clean feed, when it would be far better spent actually trying to protect the real victims of child pornography?

  3. I haven’t made up my mind on the filter yet, but I do know one thing.

The issue of regulating content on the internet is a better candidate for the title ” greatest moral and ethical dilemma of our time”

  4. Frank, none of the sites you have turned up with your mythical porn search for “pussy” are illegal and would be blocked by the Conroy’s filter.

Further, the URL http://www.pussybewet.com/ just sounds filthy but instead turns up a site devoted to wet cats.

Although I am sure Conroy will try to block that.

  5. Regarding #2154

Bugger me – I pressed the ‘post comment’ before I meant to – apologies.

What I mean to say is that the internet has become so much part of our daily living that it is difficult to see it remaining an unregulated beast for ever.

The aspect that is really putting me off Conroy is that this gizmo has:

    1) a protection-based philosophy (ie a laudable, moral goal): but

    2) produces a broad specturm prevention-based outcome (which negatively impacts parts of our society that can behave decently without the need for protection).

  6. Evening all!
I see we are still on about The Filter, porn, pussys and tigers 😉

Nice to see some zebras have joined the PB zoo 🙂

  7. I like these Morgan face to face polls, 59/41 a happy start to the weekend.
I don’t get how there can be such a big difference to their phone polls though.

  8. Astro @ 2144

this is what happens when you take posts out of context.

The context of my post was, that if you are going to get the ordinary punter on side (as you would need to, to stop the filter) you need to understand where they’re coming from.

YOU responded with ‘I’ve tried reasoning with them….’

I was attempting to point out that this misunderstood what I was saying.

Sorry if I made it too hard for you.

  9. Hi PBers- glad I’ve been tied up for a couple of days. You gotta calm down – we all know the Senate isn’t going to pass this bill so the internet will stay as per usual. Some sites will remain completely nutty and others of us will go nutty worrying about something which ain’t gonna happen.

Vera – OH spent 2 hrs in Bunnings today while I spent 2 mins. In and outa the door quicker than you can say Jack Robinson!! He had a ball while I played havoc in the interesting shops. lol

Whre did you get the Morgan Poll from? All I see on the telly is Abbott’s face so I thought the poll would have been closer.

  10. Astro

    [Thanks, I think you just shot yourself in the foot.}

    err, what?

‘bipartisan’ means two parties (‘bi’ meaning ‘two’ and ‘partisan’ means ‘belonging to a party’) and generally is taken to mean Liberal and Labor.

A loose alliance of greens and apolitical posters is not bipartisan.

  11. [The issue of regulating content on the internet is a better candidate for the title ” greatest moral and ethical dilemma of our time”]

censor me if you must William, but squiggle is truly an idiot if he beleives this. You cannot equate porn to the end of life as we know it.

  12. Finns
    Laughing my head off 😀

What are we doing sitting on top of those girls’ heads?
We look like we’re having fun whatever the reason

  13. Thanks Vera – will have a look.

Sertse 2130. In case no one has answered you. I heard that a lot of work agreements have, or are coming to an end, so the Unions are gearing up to negotiate their new agreements. The usual argy/bargy will ensue for awhile until it is sorted out and then they’ll settle down.

Meanwhile, if Tony Abbott tries to make sunshine out of this for the Libs he will find that he is in trouble because it will just remind the working voters of Serfchoices and who is still keen to get it going again.

[I truly wonder what those complaining about are losing?]

And I truly wonder why anyone would truly wonder why there are those who are concerned about new government censorship. You seem to dismiss the filter’s failure to actually work and any other arguments against it as irrelevant. It’s as though you want the government, regardless of any negative consideration, to just make its best effort; to just do something, anything; to at least be seen to be doing something.

    And I get this message:

“You don’t have permission to access /163/6/20/9/2341620090079302549bZLYAK_ph.jpg on this server.”

I don’t know why. You’ll have to tell me.

I originally signed on waaaay back when I qualified for the Education rate, and I do sort of recall OH & I were asked, when I switched to BB, whether we wanted to keep the same filters, and porn would have been included in Ed filters

So if the pro-Filter bloggers are really interested in their own wee kiddies – not minding other people’s business or using the wee kiddie argument to cover I don’t like it so I’ll try to stop anyone else’s access they can request an appropriate filter from their ISP.

  19. Triton

[It’s as though you want the government, regardless of any negative consideration, to just make its best effort; to just do something, anything; to at least be seen to be doing something]

  20. Has this Morgan Poll been mentioned on their ABC? They were quick to make a noise praising Abbott about last week’s Morgan phone 53/47

  21. Zoomster

of all the things I posted, this is what you reply with?
[‘bipartisan’ means two parties (’bi’ meaning ‘two’ and ‘partisan’ means ‘belonging to a party’) and generally is taken to mean Liberal and Labor.

A loose alliance of greens and apolitical posters is not bipartisan.]

Is Triton in that list? We already know the 3Zebra isn’t in your list. The problem I have with your posts is that you never acknowledge when you’re wrong, and perpetuate falacies like this. Quite clearly it is bipartisan, you can’t discount TTH just beacuse he’s “a loony”.

And no, you don’t need to know what people’s opinions or concerns about the filter are to know that it’s going to fail. Why do you need to know where people are coming from to judge the success of the filter?

  22. 3zebras

[Its amazing you think a word like ‘obscene’ reveals language in need of moderation, but raise no comment when another pro-censorship poster desribes the arguments of those they disagree with as ‘excreta.’]

No, it was the attitude that was in need of moderation. I didn’t object to your language.

It also depends who you’re engaging with. Frank was in a tussle with a couple of his old jousting partners; you were picking on a newbie poster and grandmother, stating that she was negligent, lazy and then ‘obscene’.

This is a way over the top response to someone expressing a genuine opinion and totally unnecessary – to my mind, unacceptable.

But maybe rudeness is OK for you.

[How would you know, if you’re not monitioring their internet access?]

    They’d tell me. Honestly.

I’m inclined to think that you – and a lot of the anti filter posters – don’t have children of your own and don’t particularly understand them.

[I also have repeatedly not said it is a good idea to “hover” and you should stop suggesting I have, its very dishonest of you.]

But it’s obscene, lazy and negligent if they don’t monitor the child’s web use and check through their browser history? I don’t know how more intrusive you can get, unless you actually take your knitting and sit beside them.

Finally – it would help if you chose a definition of ‘child’ and stuck to it.

You clarified your comments recently to say that you were referring to prepubescent children, not teenagers. Prepubescent children are not interested in sex, finding even adults kissing off putting. They also lack computer skills. So they’re not going to look for naughtiness.

As I said, I’m not interested in the issue per se – I am interested in how it’s being sold. And I am trying to point out that the average parent will go by perception.

  23. [Blather,posture,pout and pissantry.

To the No filter brigade, you paint this utopian ideal of the internet and its sacrosanct nature, whilst hiding behind the other laws of the land

    Why is that?

Your puerile and juvenille defence of your “toy” provides evidence aplenty of selfcentredness but an apparent disregard for the LAW

    Why is that?

To the usual suspects the fact that you attack someones desire to enforce commonly held community standards, says volumes for your own.

    Why is that?]

Still no answers from the freedom fighters

  24. So we don’t want a filter because it will restrict surfing and content on the net by adult Australians but it will not restrict kiddies access to porn and other such nasty sites.

  25. [And I get this message:

“You don’t have permission to access /163/6/20/9/2341620090079302549bZLYAK_ph.jpg on this server.”

I don’t know why. You’ll have to tell me.]

OZ, i have no idea. it was ok for me. i was able to download the pic. and now i am also getting the error msg.

  26. Boerwar – thanks for those posts re Abbott’s problems with planting of enough trees and sequestration of soil. You explained it simply and it is much appreciated.

You should send that off to some of the bunnies in the MSM – those who will be caught in the headlights when their boy can’t fulfil his promises with his new green plan.

  27. Astro

[And no, you don’t need to know what people’s opinions or concerns about the filter are to know that it’s going to fail. Why do you need to know where people are coming from to judge the success of the filter?]

    Once again you misunderstand me.

I was discussing how to go about winning the hearts and minds of the Average Joe if you want them to object to the filter. You responded by saying that you had tried reasoning with them. I asked if that meant you had talked to Average Joes.

So it’s nothing to do with the success or otherwise of the filter. It’s to do with how you persuade people it’s a good idea or not.

But you never acknowledge when you take me out of context.

  28. Castle

[So we don’t want a filter because it will restrict surfing and content on the net by adult Australians but it will not restrict kiddies access to porn and other such nasty sites.]

    Yes, from my perspective.

Well, it won’t have that much affect on surfing (that’s a pretty minor issue), but it will be useless and a waste of 128 Million dollars.

  29. [So we don’t want a filter because it will restrict surfing and content on the net by adult Australians but it will not restrict kiddies access to porn and other such nasty sites.]

    Ole!

[I was discussing how to go about winning the hearts and minds of the Average Joe if you want them to object to the filter. You responded by saying that you had tried reasoning with them. I asked if that meant you had talked to Average Joes. ]

You decided that was what you were doing yes. And I decided that it was irrelevant. I have no interest in trying to convince ‘average Joes’ of anything. I told you that earlier.

    [But you never acknowledge when you take me out of context.}
    I didn’t
