The Australian reports the latest fortnightly Newspoll has Labor’s two-party lead steady at 55-45. This is “despite recent revelations of the Prime Minister’s expletive-laden tirade against factional bosses” which emerged after the poll was conducted. Both Kevin Rudd and Malcolm Turnbull have lost two points to “uncommitted” on preferred prime minister, Rudd now leading 65-17. More to follow.
UPDATE: Graphic here. The poll also features questions on the carbon pollution reduction scheme. For what it’s worth, Malcolm Turnbull’s personal ratings are his best in two months.
Meantime, this week’s Essential Research survey has Labor’s lead down from 59-41 to 58-42. Further questions find support for means testing the health insurance rebate, a slight majority against the previous government’s formula for private school funding, a slight majority finding their working hours have increased in the past 12 months, a slight tendency to credit/blame the Coalition over Labor with/for the past 25 years of economic reform, and strong support for the Australian Federal Police reopening investigations into the Balibo five deaths.

And we keep telling you that this would still leave us with tonnes of CO2 that needs sequestration.
We need to double our electricity production by 2050. If we convert everything to gas, that means in 2050 we will still be producing about the same amount of CO2 from electricity as we generate now. Instead I think we should be aiming to produce electricity without releasing any CO2 by 2050.

Shows, much as producing electricity without any CO2 emissions might be a fine thing to aim for, it simply is not possible. There is no way you will not produce CO2 emissions at some stage in the process. Use the production of metal of any sort and you will emit something that goes into the atmosphere.
This approximate characterisation of a NSW government is irredeemably corrupt. This just takes the cake. Even more special deals for mates. Despite explicit denials that the govt was not intending to sell of railway land along rail corridors, but was only wanting to create open space for local kiddies to play on – ‘ ”rail trails” for hiking, biking and horseriding on unused rail lines” – a briefing note, confirmed as genuine, says the precise opposite, and not only around unused lines. I think I’d rather have the government of Sicily from 20 years ago:

It is staggering, they seem to be so caught up giving land to developer mates regardless of how it looks you. Have to wonder if they are just in a rush to hand as much as they can over before the next election. You would think the NSW govt itself are simply operatives of some organised crime gang?

Though I’m wondering if it would be any different under a Liberal Govt – perhaps the Libs are more subtle in doing it.

I haven’t seen anything to compare with this govts behaviour. The old line – ‘the others are worse’ – won’t cut the mustard any more. The NSW govt has to go, regardless, and spend some time in the wilderness to rid themselves of the Obeid/Tripodi/Keneally etc etc parasite which has consumed them.
Although it goes without saying I would prefer by a long way a hung parliament with independents/greens with the balance of power, rather than a majority LNP govt. , as long as Labor is nowhere near the ministerial offices for a good while to come.
As I always say, if you want to see the logical conclusion of the two party tyranny in a single member electorate system in Australia, look no further than the NSW parliament over the past 15 years or so. You can’t vote for either of the big two but the voting system keeps bringing votes back to them. (not mine, with optional preferential in NSW, but most votes). AAArrrgghh!

I meant at the power plant. By 2050 Australia should aim for power plants that either don’t produce CO2, or if they do produce CO2, all of it is sequestered.
France has some of the cleanest air in all of Europe because 80% of its electricity generation is nuclear, which doesn’t put any CO2 into the air. I agree that mining, refining and enriching uranium creates CO2, but over the entire nuclear life cycle nuclear is on par with the production of photo-voltaic cells.
