Cannington covers low-income territory in south-eastern Perth, including the light industrial suburb that bears its name, Queens Park to the north, Beckenham to the east, and Ferndale, Lynwood and Langford to the south. It ranks second in the state for non-English speakers, featuring particularly large numbers of voters of Chinese and Indian origin. The electorate was created with the one-vote one-value redistribution in 2008, from territory formerly accommodated by Victoria Park in the north, Kenwick in the east, and Riverton and Southern River in the south. Labor's notional 13.3% margin at the time of its creation was pared back by swings of 9.0% in 2008 and 2.1% in 2013, and there has been a further 0.5% cut in the latest redistribution. The western boundary has been redrawn to add Parkwood from Riverton in the south (4600 voters), while transferring Wilson to Victoria Park further to the north (3500 voters). The seat has been held for Labor since 2008 by Bill Johnston, a former official with the Right faction Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association, who served as the party's state secretary from 2001 to 2008. Together with his SDA-aligned colleagues (including his wife, South Metropolitan MLC Kate Doust), Johnston was loyal to Eric Ripper in the face of leadership threats from Ben Wyatt and Mark McGowan during the first term, and was one of a small number of MPs rated as supporters of Stephen Smith's ill-fated leadership pitch in early 2016. He nonetheless won promotion to shadow cabinet when McGowan secured the leadership in January 2012, and has served since that time in the state development and energy portfolios. For the second election in a row, the seat will be contested for the Liberals by Jesse Jacobs, a Canning councillor and Chinese language interpreter. |
